Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Monday, May 7
At 1.30 this morning I’m winding down what little work I have to do at Hotel B when I hear the door to the front desk open and low and behold it’s Adam, the new GM…GM Adam was dressed in Air Force fatigues, too…I was curious – as you would be, too – as to exactly what GM Adam was doing at the front desk at 1:30am dressed like GI Joe, but GM Adam is still living on property, so it wasn’t a complete surprise to see him, and it turns out he is in the Air Force Reserves, too, which explains the airman get-up.

He was just saying howdy…He had just gotten back from his reserve weekend and, in the finest traditions of the service, he reported it was a complete clusterf*ck…GM Adam is in the service for the third time…He did six years in the Marines, then some time in the Army and is now in the Air Force…He also said he was out for ten years, tho I don’t know when…I found myself wondering if he had to go to boot camp three times and I should have asked if he was a member of the Legion.

Signed for online purchasing privileges at the Navy Exchange website…I was farting around there, just for funsies, probably looking for a new white hat to wear for the Memorial Day ceremony cause recall I’m wearing my uniform, which still fits, don’t doubt that…Anyway, I saw where vets who are not retired could sign up so I did…I had to upload my discharge papers and they said approval could take up to three days, but I had an email approving me when I woke up this afternoon…The Navy being the Navy, I half expected something to be screwed up when I tried to establish my account but no, everything went flawlessly.

We don’t really need anything from the Navy Exchange right now, but the prices are pretty good and you don’t pay sales tax, either…Free shipping on orders over $50, too, so it might end up being a better than the retailer which has pretty low prices to start with and where we get a 10 percent discount besides.

The Wife is back in residence after her house sitting gig…One thing I noticed when I took the trash to the curb was how little trash I generated…With only ol’ Sparrow in residence, there exactly one (1) sack of trash in the can taken to the curb…With The Wife around the can is usually half full, at least…Now, of course, ol’ Sparrow will not produce as much trash on his own but it could also mean I am not throwing what trash I do generate away.

A more immediate effect of The Wife’s return can be found in the laundry department…I took some clothes out of the dryer tonight – itself a novel concept – and immediately folded and put them away instead of tossing them on the kitchen table or the couch.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0930 Monday morning till 1730 Monday afternoon, wearing the brick red house shirt…That’s 9:30am and 5:30pm for you civilians out there…With my approval to shop online at the Navy Exchange, I’ll be using military time till further notice…No matter how you tell time, that is a solid eight hours, tho the start time is reckoned and the end time is rounded down because, ol’ Sparrow prefers round numbers…I took a PM, too, to make sure I wasn’t obliged to wake up and use the can in the middle of the afternoon so I was somewhat dismayed when I did wake up at 2pm or so for no goddamned reason whatsoever…I didn’t have to go to the bathroom and I remember thinking damn, this can’t be it but I was back asleep in short order.

13.5 hours for the week…Hardly a Monday five-week high, but far from the low, too…A good catch-up sleep session.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

The Diary of a Nobody was inspired by the 19th century British novel of the same name.
