The Diary of a Nobody/September 17

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Thursday, September 17
A great day off.

I woke up (see Sleep Log below) feeling wonderful…Refreshed, strong, the whole nine yards…In fact, matters got so completely out of hand ol’ Sparrow even cleaned the house…I hadn’t planned to, which is not to be interpreted as meaning it didn’t need it…Of course, it did…There were dishes to do and clothes on the kitchen table and the floors needed sweeping/vacuuming…I was so enthused I was determined to do it before heading to the gym because I wanted it all to be done before I got home…Except for laundry…That was going most of the day, but here, too, there was a paradigm shift: it was put away and not tossed on the kitchen table or on top of the microwave, save for the last batch which was deferred till later and left in the dryer.

The weight session was strong, but not max weights…Recall this was the first workout since last Thursday’s lousy workout and I ate like a pig all week and you can’t sashay in under those circumstances and expect to move max weight…So yours truly cut it back not the usual single plate or so, but back to a full Welcome Back Workout (WBW), the kind you do after you’ve been out three weeks or so: roughly three-quarters of what you used to do….This was a good call and the last sets were all moved ten times which is what we’re looking for, of course, all except the bench, where it was only moved eight times.

That was followed by a triumphant River Route Walk…It was in the low 40s, but it would warm up a bit and the only sign of being a wuss was the wearing of gloves and by 0845 ol’ Sparrow was home with project work, workout and house cleaning done and he felt so great he declared a General Holiday and it was immediately decided there would no trip to the next county…Nothing is really needed at the retailer – I can get the cat’s treasured canned food in town – and the prospect of lunch at the Mexican joint couldn’t even move us to leave the house.

The beard is now being trimmed every few days…This is down from once a week, itself down from the original every fortnight…It looks better short, and the desired length has been reduced from 9 mm to 6 mm with 3 mm now the approved length…It was trimmed this morning before the post-workout shower.

It was such a leisurely day a movie was even watched…I forget how, but the book The List of Adrian Messenger had come up and I’d read it years ago and thought there was a movie made of it…There had been, and it could be watched for free and it was pretty good…Not as good as In Cold Blood was in comparison to the book, but good nonetheless…There are some differences between the movie and the book, but in general Adrian Messenger gives a list to a buddy who can find things out and the list has names on it and the common thread is they are all dead, a category Messenger soon falls into….Further inquiry shows they were all murdered and the search for the murderer is on.

The only downside to the day was by 1400 ol’ Sparrow was too tired even to read….Crap…Regular readers of this crap know the usual Thursday Turn-In Time (TTIT) is 1800 or so, so yours truly was left with four hours of, basically, staying up waiting to go to sleep…I don’t particularly like this, and I know you don’t either, so I retired to the couch to listen to stuff and that grew tedious after a while, so yours truly retired to the bedroom and eventually started dozing off….I wasn’t entirely pleased with this, tho, and I think next time we might just try going to bed when it feels right and see what happens.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1900 Wednesday until 0200 Thursday…7.0 hours for the night and 26.5 hours for the week.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
