The Diary of a Nobody/November 18

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Monday, November 18
Had a gracious email from GM Barbara this morning advising me I was screwing up January’s occupancy report, providing the figures for January 2019 instead of the figures for this coming January.

Barbara said it was nice to review the January 2019 figures – who wouldn’t, it was a successful month – but if I could start providing the upcoming January figures, that would be preferred…I laffed to myself…When you enter the date range for the occupancy report (I provide three, the current month and the following two months) it’s customary to only type in the month and the date and the system automatically produces a report for the current year, so when I only typed in 0101 and 0131 it produced the January 2019 report…I’m old enuff now so that I wrote “Jan 2020” on a scratch sheet and taped it to the monitor in the back office so I’d remember.

What’s not clear, however – and this is almost interesting – is whether they just now noticed I’d been providing 2019 figures or whether they were waiting for ol’ Sparrow to get on the stick and figured if I hadn’t yet I probably wasn’t going to.

For the second time in a week the chair in the back office has been adjusted…I am not making that up…It had been at the same setting – the seat, not the armrests, these are adjusted constantly – for ages but earlier this week someone raised it several inches…I adjusted it back but tonight it was lower than usual…I don’t know what’s going on…I mean, we don’t have any new desk clerks and no one currently on staff has changed heights…Everyone’s the same size…Thing is, the new lower setting is actually pretty comfy so I’m not complaining – rare, I know – and I left it where it was.

We are almost done with the wrecked car…A title company sent some paperwork that needed to be signed in order for the settlement check to be sent…Whoever was in charge of this evolution is high…I gave the adjuster my address, both street and PO Box and he said it would be FedEx’d over…It never got here…I called Reginald to ask what the deal was and he called the title company and the broad said all we had was the PO Box and we need a street address…Both Reginald and I saw no point in arguing the matter and I provided my street address again and she said it would be in the afternoon mail.

They sent it USPS to my PO Box!!!…No, I don’t understand that, either…There were just a couple of things for The Wife and me to sign and I tossed in the extra key I had and sent it off.

We still, of course, have to take delivery of the car we bought last Thursday…Recall it’s getting some recall work done and, despite the fact we now own it, it’s still sitting at the dealer…The courtesy car they gave is good enuff, I suppose, but I have yet to get comfortable in it…I am regularly fiddling with the seat which means I am regularly fiddling with the mirrors and I can’t hook up the music player because the adapter doesn’t fit of all things…You would think these would all be standard but either their not or I am no longer competent enuff to plug a USB cable and an audio jack in.

Still slow at the Veterans Service Office (VSO)…There were no messages and no emails of any particular relevance waiting for me and things were so slow Tom, the Fatherhood Program coordinator and the only other guy in the welfare department, and I went and got a cup of coffee together.

When I got back I had a phone call from Mr N…He’s an older veteran who said he just found his discharge papers and wondered if he could come by so I could look at them and see what benefits he might be entitled to…Of course, that’s what ol’ Sparrow is here for and we made an appointment for Wednesday, tho we didn’t set a time…Mr N has a dentist appointment Wednesday but he couldn’t remember the time, so he said he’d ask his wife and then call and leave me a message letting me know when he’d be in…I’m pretty free Wednesday, so this works.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1430 Tuesday until 2130 Tuesday…7.0 hours for the day and 15.0 hours for the week, both satisfactory totals…I slept so well and so long that I was actually up a bit before the alarm.

You know, when I started the VSO gig I privately fussed that Monday could be a tuff go in the sleep department because sometimes when you’re up later than usual you get your second wind and then BOOM it’s tuff to fall asleep…This hasn’t been the case and today was a splendid sleep session: I was asleep soon enuff and I did not wake up to use the can once.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
