Saturday, July 1 It was a slow June at the hotel and the end-of-month figures reflected that…Revenue was down from last June, from 462 down to 411, and occupancy for the month was only 59%, compared to 69% last June…Almost interestingly, tho, our average daily rate (ADR; room revenue divided by rooms rented) was up a few bucks, meaning guests continued to take it in the shorts.
Now, regular readers of this crap know we do have our lucky numbers, but they weren’t so lucky last time, and something inside us – call it all the instincts all the great ones have if you must – said roll with the quick pick! and we’ve learned over the years that you ignore your instincts at your peril…

The mile remains the only non-metric distance recognized for record purposes.

It was the first cleaning of any sort in a month and it’s to the point now where a squadron of Merry Maids would need to work around the clock for a week in order to restore even the remotest semblance of cleanliness to the place…

In 1559 – King Henry II of France is mortally injured in a jousting tournament by the captain of his bodyguard unit in Paris. Henry II was an avid jouster and the tournament had been held to commemorate a recent peace treaty and the marriage of his daughter. His assailant, the Count of Montgomery, was absolved of blame by Henry but, still disgraced, retired to his Normandy estates anyway. Henry died of complications from infection on July 10 and was succeeded by his 15-year-old son Francis II.
In 1908 – Cy Young of the Boston Red Sox ties the major league record for most career no-hitters in n 8-0 victory over the New York Yankees. It was the third no-hitter for Young, tying the record established by Larry Corcoran of the Chicago Cubs from 1880-84. The mark would later be tied by Bob Feller, broken by Sandy Koufax (4) and is now held by Nolan Ryan (7). Young, 41, remains the oldest pitcher to throw his third no-hitter. – Editor’s Note: In order to enhance both narrative flow and the reader experience, it is Daily Dose policy to refer to teams still in the same city by their current name. At the time, the Yankees were known as the Highlanders and the Cubs as the White Stockings. Daily Dose editors are aware it would taken less space – and less of your time – to state this in the item itself.
In 1973 – George Harrison is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth). It was the fourth of 14 Top 40 solo hits for Harrison, his third of five Top 10 hits, and was his second of three #1s. The song also peaked at #8 in Great Britain and was Billboard’s 42nd-biggest song of the year. The song was from the album Living in the Material World, which was in its second of five consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s album chart.

Thursday, June 29 Boy, this was a wasted day…Well, from a leisure standpoint it was a complete triumph, but from a Useful Day Off (UDO) standpoint, it was only the barest of successes.
We weren’t very good, but this was the first game at this level we’ve done in several years, so you wouldn’t expect an Umpire of the Year nomination…

The first federally funded roadways were authorized by Congress in 1916.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow reports there’s a certified Rock Star staying at the hotel. Today’s Diary.
He’s in town for a show, obviously, and he’s registered under a code name of a 17th-century English philosopher, and he’s staying in a regular room and not a suite, which we found surprising, but the band appears to be paying their own expenses, so that could have something to do with it…

It’s a long walk and the old biddy is in her nightie, a white, cotton knee-length deal that was a tad shearer than either prudence mandated or ol’ Sparrow desired…

In 1898 – The first solo circumnavigation of the Earth is completed when mariner Joshua Slocum arrives at Newport, Rhode Island. Slocum had departed Briar Island, Nova Scotia in July 1895 and had initially sailed to Gibraltar, before turning around and heading toward South America in order to avoid Mediterranean pirates. Slocum rarely touched the helm and navigated mainly using dead reckoning and noon sun sightings.
In 1977 – Willie McCovey of the San Francisco Giants becomes the first major leaguer to hit two home runs in an inning twice in a career in a 14-9 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. McCovey hit two home runs and had five RBIs in a 10-run sixth inning, matching the feat he had done in 1973. The mark has since been accomplished by Andre Dawson, Jeff King, Alex Rodriguez, and Edwin Encarnacion
In 1960 – The Kingston Trio is at #1 on Billboard’s mono album chart for the seventh of ten non-consecutive weeks with Sold Out – the fourth of five #1 albums for the group – and Terry Snyder and the All Stars are at #1 on Billboard’s stereo album chart for the seventh of 13 non-consecutive weeks with Persuasive Percussion, which would spend 124 weeks on a Billboard album chart. Billboard maintained separate mono and stereo charts until August 1963 and research into Terry Snyder and the All-Stars’ chart history was inconclusive.
