The Diary of a Nobody/July 1

Of course, Read Free Sunday (RFS) is a thing at The Diary.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, July 1
It was a slow June at the hotel and the end-of-month figures reflected that…Revenue was down from last June, from 462 down to 411, and occupancy for the month was only 59%, compared to 69% last June…Almost interestingly, tho, our average daily rate (ADR; room revenue divided by rooms rented) was up a few bucks, meaning guests continued to take it in the shorts.

Numbers for the year are still strong, tho, with revenue up over 700K for the year and we remain an ADR machine for 2023 at $222, up over $70 from June 2022, mainly because over the winter guests needed loans to stay here.

About midnite this guy calls and asks what we have and we say we could do a room with two queen beds for $199, plus tax…He says he’ll take it and will be here in a few minutes and he shows up and is with a gal and they’re both carrying luggage and we’ve been knocking around our fellow humans long enuff to know a couple enjoying a nice little spat when we see one…Proof they were not Couple of the Year came when we noted we actually had rooms with one king bed available and gave him his choice and he glanced at his woman, shook his head dismissively (which was not completely unfunny) and said the two queens would do.

Senor Juan showed up to check out around 0300…He’s one of our regular delivery drivers tho – now that we think about it – we haven’t seen him in a while…Anyway, he asked if we’ve been busy and there was no reason to lie to Sneor Juan, so we said not really and he noted it’s been slower than you’d expect for the start of summer for him, too, especially with sort of a holiday weekend coming up…Sort of a holiday weekend…Not really, tho…The 4th, of course, is on a Tuesday, and for some, maybe, it’s a 5-day weekend but for most no, it isn’t, including us hardworking county employees because the veterans service office will be open on Monday.

We slept later than usual for Saturday (see Sleep Log below) but we were able to make it into the gym for a workout…We were up for good – certified by the cat, who came in and hopped on my back – and rolled over to check the time it was almost 2000…That time is neither good nor bad, however it is about the latest we can wake up and still get a workout in, but you have to hustle…So we hustled, even tho Ol’ Sparrow doesn’t move on a dime anymore – if he ever did, which is subject to some doubt…Usually, it’s about an hour from getting out of bed to arrival at the gym…Today, tho, we did it in a PB 27 minutes, which includes getting the cat her now-usual treats.

We still aren’t completely recovered from being up for 44+ hours strait (the exact total is hazy and depends on when we actually fell asleep Thursday afternoon, which we can only surmise)…Usually, it takes a normal week to do that…You don’t want to call that long a period up a trauma, but you don’t bounce right back…Well, maybe Navy SEALS do, but not 57-year-old ol’ Sparrow.

So we kept it lite again and you could tell it would be a lite session from the get-go, as even the light, first-set weights were a bit tuffer than usual…That’s all right, tho…Forcing things in the weight room – as with most aspects of life – seldom lead to anything good, and we were happy to keep it light…Maybe by Thursday we’ll be back to normal.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1030 Saturday until 2000 Saturday…9.5 hours for the day – a strong finish – and 40.5 hours for the week, a total regular readers of this crap know is strait out of a house of horrors (HoH)…In fact, it’s the lowest total since the Troubles of March 2019, and a full 18.5 off of our 59.0 hours PB…God bless all of you.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
