The Daily Dose/April 23, 2023
By Gaylon Kent – America’s Funniest Guy™

The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.

1. Ready…Aim…Fire Don’t get lost now message in US, as strangers at door and in driveways now fair game as open season now declared on those with nerve to lose their way…To their credit, though, gun nuts everywhere decrying decline of warning shot in America, as once common courtesy might have prevented useless carnage.

2. Oakland A’s You know guys, you want to leave, good riddance, grab the Las Vegas promised land before anyone else does, tho had you really wanted to, you could’ve had a shiny new stadium next to your current dump…With previous stops in Kansas City and Philadelphia, Vegas bookmakers already taking action on where you’ll move to in 2075.

3. #USA! #USA! The 3-hole staple…Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters continue to “strongly suspect” US has until this half-century is out to get their arse in gear before country implodes under weight of its ignorance and intolerance and remain “pretty sure” none of the major announced candidates in either party will help us get there…US hasn’t been led since Kennedy avoided nuclear war and said “let’s go to the moon”, tho US electorate seems OK with that.

4. NFL Five (5) players suspended for gambling, three (3) on NFL games and two (2) for gambling on other things in NFL facilities…Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters not ones to gloat, but did they call it or what???…You get in bed with legalized gamblers and these things are going to happen, with nation, Roger Goodell, breathlessly awaiting news on first fixed NFL games.

5. NBA Playoffs Assault and battery legal now in quest for NBA title, as players getting slugged, beaten, and stepped on left and right nowadays, making already barely tolerable game now completely unwatchable…Like our government, Americans can’t get enough of it, though, so expect tie games to be resolved by MMA contest instead of overtime in time for NBA Finals.

In 1635 – Boston Latin School – the oldest public school in the US – is established. Classes were held at the headmaster’s home until the school opened its own schoolhouse in 1745, the school is now located in the southwestern part of the city, near Northeastern University, and remains the oldest existing school in the country. They have played football against Boston English High School since 1887, the oldest high school sports rivalry in the US.

In 1950 – The Detroit Red Wings win the Stanley Cup defeating the New York Rangers 4-3 in two overtimes, winning the series four games to three. It was the fourth of eleven Stanley Cup titles for the Red Wings and the fourth of seven runner-up finishes for the Rangers and the Cup-winning goal was scored by Pete Babando at the 8:31 mark. Due to a circus being held at Madison Square Garden, the Rangers only hosted two games, games two and three in Toronto.

In 1966 – The Righteous Brothers are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the third and final consecutive week with (You’re My) Soul and Inspiration. It was the fifth of eleven Top 40 hits for the duo, their fifth of six Top 10 hits, and was their second and final #1 song in a chart career that lasted from 1963-90. The song also peaked at #15 in Great Britain and was Billboard’s 12th-biggest song of the year.  A version by Donny and Marie Osmond peaked at #38 in 1978.

The Diary of a Nobody/April 22

Three (3) cheers for Read Free Sunday (RFS) at The Diary.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, April 22
Assistant Front Desk Manager Q was there when we reported for duty at the hotel tonite, the first time we’ve relieved Q in quite a while…He reported that even tho it was a dead slow nite, five of the few arrivals we had for the day were still to come in…He did this with some contrition because it is well known on swing shift that ol’ Sparrow prefers everyone to be in when he favors the front desk with his presence.

The kid was a total science geek, too, because you didn’t have to be Neil Armstrong to notice his t-shirt had a pic of the Solar System on the front and while we couldn’t understand what he was talking about [on the phone], we were smart enuff to recognize it as the Copernican model.

In 1969 – Sir Robin Knox-Johnston completes the first solo circumnavigation of the Earth, returning to Falmouth in southern England. Knox-Johnston and his boat Suhaili had left Falmouth on June 14 and passed the southern points of Africa and South America before heading north. The accomplishment was part of the Sunday Times Golden Globe race, which started with nine sailors, though Knox-Johnston was the only finisher.

In 1876 – The Boston Red Caps defeat the Philadelphia Athletics 6-5 at Jefferson Street Grounds in Philadelphia in the first game in National League and major league history. The first run was scored by Boston’s Tim McGinley and teammate Bill Parks was the only player to play his only big league game today. The Red Caps are now the Atlanta Braves and the Athletics left the National League at the end of the season.

In 1989 – Madonna is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of three consecutive weeks with Like a Prayer. The song went to #1 in 18 other countries including Uraguay, Norway, and Great Britain, peaked at #20 on Billboard’s soul chart, and was Billboard’s 25th-biggest song of the year and was her seventh of twelve #1 songs. The song was from the album of the same name, which was in its first of six consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

In 1789 – John Adams is sworn in as the first vice president of the United States at Federal Hall in New York City, then the capital of the United States. The United States Constitution had taken effect on March 4 but neither Adams or president-elect George Washington were in the capital to take their oaths of office. Washington, in fact, was in Trenton, New Jersey on this date and would be inaugurated on April 30. Adams would serve two terms as vice president and would be elected president in 1796, serving one term.

In 1934 – Moe Berg of the Washington Senators establishes a new American League record for most consecutive errorless games by a catcher in a 7-2 loss to the Philadelphia Athletics. It was the 117th consecutive errorless game for Berg, and research into whose record he broke, and who held the National League record, was inconclusive. Berg’s major league career had started as a shortstop and in World War II he was a spy for the Office of Strategic services. The big league record for most consecutive errorless games by a catcher is now 253 by Mike Redomond, from 2004-10.

1979 – Amii Stewart is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the only week with Knock on Wood. It was the first of three chart singles for Stewart and remains her only Top 40, Top 10, and #1 song. The song also went to #1 in Canada and peaked at #6 in both Great Britain and on Billboard’s soul chart. Versions by Eddie Floyd (#28, 1966) and Otis Redding (#30, 1967) have also hit the Hot 100.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow fields a complaint from someone who stayed at a competing hotel. Today’s Diary.

Ol’ Sparrow was sympathetic and, always thinking sales, said “Look, I work at another hotel…Had you stayed with me” tapping my chest as if I owned the joint “you not only would’ve had satisfactory in-room coffee but first-class morning coffee service in the lobby, too”…

In 2010 – The Deepwater Horizon drilling rig explodes in the Gulf of Mexico, about 250 miles southeast of Houston, killing eleven people. The oil spill lasted until September, when the well was finally sealed, with the US government estimating the total discharge at 210 million gallons. The rig would sink on the 22nd and this remains the largest marine oil spill ever.

In 1988 – The Baltimore Orioles establish a new major league record for most consecutive losses at the start of a season in an 8-6 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. It was the 14th consecutive loss for the Brewers, breaking the record of 13 losses established by the Washington Senators in 1904 and tied by the Detroit Tigers in 1920. The Orioles would go on to lose their first 21 games of the year, a record that still stands.

In 1991 – Wilson Phillips is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with You’re In Love. It was the fourth chart single for the group, all of which reached the Top 10, and was their third and final #1 song. The song also peaked at #29 in Great Britain and was Billboard’s 27th-biggest song of the year. The group last hit a Billboard singles chart in 2012 when a remake of Good Vibrations peaked at #25 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

In 1775 – The American Revolution begins, with forces from the Continental Army and the British Army meeting in the Battles of Lexington and Concord west of Boston. The night before, news of the arrival of British troops had been passed by assorted patriots on horseback and the battles were a victory for the Americans, with the British retreating to Boston, which led to the Siege of Boston, which led to another British retreat the following March. The Revolution ended in 1783 with an American victory.

In 2021 – Patrick Marleau of the San Jose Sharks establishes a new NHL record for most games played in a 3-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights. It was the 1,768th NHL game for Marleau, breaking the record established by Gordie Howe from 1946-80. Marleau played his first NHL game on October 1, 1999 for San Jose and also played with Toronto and Pittsburgh in his career. He retired after the season with 1,779 games played, still the NHL record.

In 1969 – The 5th Dimension is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second of six consecutive weeks with the medley of Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In. It was the eighth of 20 Top 40 hits for the group, their third of seven Top 10 hits, and was their first of two #1s (Wedding Bell Blues, three weeks, 1969). The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #11 in Great Britain, and at #6 on Billboard’s soul chart. Both songs were written for the musical Hair.
