In 1888 – The first of the eleven murders History refers to as the Whitechapel Murders occurs in London’s East End. The victim was Emma Smith, a prostitute, a line of work common amongst Whitechapel murder victims. Though authorities linked five of the murders to Jack the Ripper, it’s not thought that Smith was one of those victims. The murders stopped suddenly in 1891, and the identity of Jack the Ripper was never established.

In 1980 – The Savannah State Tigers – a Division II school in Georgia – establish a new NCAA all-division record for most consecutive wins with 8-0 over the Clafin Panthers in the first game of a doubleheader. It was the 41st straight win for the Tigers, breaking the record of 40 established Division II Marietta the year before. The Tigers would end up winning 46 straight games before losing and the record still stands.

In 1961 – The Marcels are at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of three consecutive weeks with Blue Moon. The song also went to #1 in New Zealand, Canada, and Great Britain, and was also in its first of two consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart. It was the first of four chart singles for the group, their first of two Top 10 hits, and remains their only #1 song. The song was written in 1934 and while several versions have hit a variety of Billboard charts over the years, this remains the only version to hit #1.

The Daily Dose/April 2, 2022
By Gaylon Kent – America’s Funniest Guy™

The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.

1. Donald Trump Indictment could not be happening to a nicer guy…The bulletin, however, is not that he was eventually indicted for something but that – more than two years after Jan 6 – the charges will not involve things like “insurrection” and “treason”.

2. Trump 2024 Even criminal indictment not enough to end third quest for White House…You would think that a presidential term riddled with ignorance and incompetence would have precluded this, but no…Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters “pretty sure” this is “pretty solid” sign America has completely lost its mind.

3. #USA! #USA! The 3-hole staple…The fact that the prospect of federal prisoner Trump being elected and serving as president is even remotely a thing anywhere except Bizarro World shows just how far America has fallen…Why media, Trump followers still give/ever gave man who believes moon is part of Mars the time of day remains a mystery.

4. San Diego State vs. UConn Come on, how many who only filled out one bracket had this as the title game???….Only the five people who took undergraduate and graduate degrees at both universities…A matchup with shock value more or less  on par with a former president being indicted…Oh wait…

5. Fake News Click here to enjoy assorted stories that some of the wizards amongst us were believing this week…Courtesy of the AP.

A: Yes. Yes, it is.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow responds to a complaint of dirty pillowcases. Today’s Diary.

We’re not entirely sure how this happens…Pillowcases, like other linens, go strait from the dryer to either the rack or a maid’s cart; it’s not as if someone wipes their ass with them…

In 1789 – The United States House of Representatives achieves a quorum for the first time and elects Pennsylvania’s Frederick Muhlenberg its first speaker. The House, along with the Senate, had first met on March 4 and the Senate would achieve its first quorum on April 6, a day when the two houses met to count the Electoral College votes that elected George Washington president. Both houses met at Federal Hall in New York City.

In 1954 – Gordie Howe of the Detroit Red Wings establishes a new NHL playoff record for the fastest goal at the start of a game in a 4-3, two-overtime win over the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup semifinals. Howe scored 9 seconds into the game, to break the record of 10 seconds that had been done on March 25 by Dickie Moore of Montreal and the record is now 6 seconds by Dave Kozak of the Los Angeles Kings in 1977. The Red Wings would later defeat the Montreal Canadiens in seven games to win the Stanley Cup.

In 1967 – George Jones is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the first of two consecutive weeks with Walk Through This World With Me. It was the 57th country hit for Jones and his fourth of 13 #1 country hits, a total that includes three duets with Tammy Wynette and one with Merle Haggard. Jones initially did not like the song and only recorded it at the insistence of his producer.

Answer To The Last Trivia Question
Knowledge is power.

The official NHL record book, almost incredibly, does not have a category for most goals allowed in a period by an individual goalie. Some research, however, shows the record 9, by Michael Larocque of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the second period of a 14-4 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on March 19, 1981.

In 1492 – Catholic monarchs Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon  – both now part of Spain – order the country’s 150,000 Jews and Muslims to convert or face expulsion, an act History refers to as the Alhambra Decree. Muslims had conquered the Iberian Peninsula in the eighth century and Jews had inhabited the area since Roman times. The edict was formally revoked in 1968, though Spain had long since guaranteed religious freedom.

In 1973 – The Philadelphia Flyers tie the NHL record for most goals in a period in a 10-2 win over the New York Islanders. The Flyers scored eight goals in the second period to tie the mark done on four other occasions and tied once more before the Buffalo Sabres scored nine goals in the second period of a March 1981 game, a record that still stands. Islanders goalie Gerry Desjardins gave up six of the goals before being relieved midway through the period.

In 1973 – Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandell are at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the third and final consecutive week with Dueling Banjos. It was the only chart album for the duo and research into how many acts have had their only album go to #1 was inconclusive. The self-titled single from the album was used in the movie Deliverance and peaked at #2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and at #5 on their country chart.

In 1842 – Dr Crawford Long performs the first surgery using ether as anesthesia in Jefferson, Georgia. Dr Long removed a neck tumor from James Venable and the ether was administered by having Venable inhale ether from a towel and three years later became the first to use ether during birth. Long kept his findings to himself and the first public demonstration of ether anesthesia was performed by Dr William T. G. Morton in 1846.

In 1925 – The Victoria Cougars of the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL) win the Stanley Cup, defeating the Montreal Canadiens 6-1 in game four in Victoria to win the series three games to one. The Cougars had defeated Saskatoon and Calgary in the WCHL playoffs while the Canadiens defeated Toronto in the NHL playoffs and made the finals after Hamilton was suspended when their players went on strike for more money. The Cougars remain the last non-NHL team to win the Stanley Cup and were the last team from west of Chicago to do so until Edmonton in 1984.

In 1974 – John Denver is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the only week with Sunshine On My Shoulders. It was Denver’s fourth of 15 Top 40 hits and eight Top 10 hits and his first four #1s. The song also went to #1 in Canada and peaked at #42 on Billboard’s country chart. It was from his Greatest Hits album, which was then in its first of two weeks at #1 on Billboard’s album chart.
