The Diary of a Nobody/April 1

Relax. It’s Read Free Sunday (RFS) at The Diary.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, April 1
Boy, it was a long nite at the hotel…It was end-of-month and guests needed things and we weren’t done until 0520, an awful time.

There was an email exchange while I was out between Chris, Controller Candace, and AGM Brandon…A dull one, too, concerning the house accounts we adjust off every nite during the restaurant audit…Evidently, a couple of accounts adjusted off to needed to have the accounts they are adjusted off to changed…Rather than go into too many details, it’s easier to actually spell out the old and the new write-off procedures…First off is how we’ve been doing it for the past couple of months or so…On the left is the house account number and on the right is the account it was adjusted off to:

9002 – 2002
9005 – 2003
9033 – 2004
9044 – 2001

Here’s the new way…It is cut and pasted from Chris’s email and those keeping score at home will note the addition of a fifth account, 9007, to adjust off.

9002 – 2017
9005 – 2002
9007 – 2017
9033 – 2004
9044 – 2001

Needless to say, yours truly didn’t understand any of it…We’re auditors, not accountants…But where they want stuff adjusted off to – heck, why they’re even adjusted off in the first place – is their lookout, not mine.

Shortly after checking in 249 called whining about how their pillows were dirty…We’re not entirely sure how this happens…Pillowcases, like other linens, go strait from the dryer to either the rack or a maid’s cart; it’s not as if someone wipes their ass with them…Still tho, the appropriate response is “I’ll take care of it”.

The problem, tho, is pillows are tuff to find…Then it occurred to us we weren’t completely sold out and vacant rooms have pillows, so we took some pillows from 139 and took them to 249…We inspected the old pillows and could see where, yeah, they might not have met the highest possible standard…We weren’t entirely certain where to leave the dirty pillows, so we took the back to 139, just for funsies.

The big news is ol’ Sparrow did away with the shred box…Recall during the remodel when we were in temporary quarters, there wasn’t a shredder…It was in Cadace’s office and the day’s shredding was put in a box and shredded later…When we returned to the front desk the shred box made the trip with us, which meant people stopped doing their own shredding…I don’t know who they expected to do it for them; it wasn’t ol’ Sparrow, that’s for sure…As we’ve noted here before, the nite audit is not the repository for crap you don’t want to do.

Tonite, tho, the shred box was almost empty, we saw an opportunity, and took advantage of that opportunity: we shredded what was there, emptied the shredder bin, and broke down the shred box, with the knife, of course…We’ll see if anyone takes advantage of the opportunity we’re offering to do your own shredding…We tend to doubt it and there is a high level of probability there will be a new shred box in place tomorrow or, as likely as not, someone will be too lazy to do even that and papers will merely be tossed on top of the shredder.

For end of month, we stopped printing house account and A/R folios…Nobody reads the end-of-month packets and they’re not even going thru the motions of taking the packet to an office anymore because the past couple of months the end-of-month packets have ended up in my box…Not only does this save ol’ Sparrow some time, but it saves no small amount of paper, too, and that’s a win for the environment.

The end-of-month numbers were outstanding, perhaps even record-breaking when compared to March 2022…Revenue was up almost $250K to $910K on, get this, 12% fewer rooms…I am not making that up…This is hardly a bulletin to regular readers of this crap because this winter saw the first $500 and $600 rates for our nicest rooms on our busiest nites…This meant an average daily rate (ADR; room revenue/rooms rented) for the month was a lusty $289, a $95 increase over last March.

There was good strength in the small town gym (STG) this evening…Not the +1 strength we had last time out, but still in the wheelhouse…Key here is to listen to yourself because, as noted here from time to time, we don’t need to push too hard at our advanced age…So you pay attention to the second set, done ten times with a weight where failure would 15 reps or so…If this takes regular effort, you go with the regular workout…If it’s easier than usual well, then a +1 workout is in order…From the start, the second set was normal enuff, so we did the usual workout.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0830 Saturday until 1700 Friday…8.5 hours for the day and 53.0 hours for the week, a fine total…We went strait to bed when we got home, too…We didn’t even report to the chair for some reading.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
