The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.

1. Vladimir Putin Russian leader completely off his rocker now, conducting elections and annexing parts of Ukraine nobody outside of his bedroom acknowledges as legitimate…Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters “pretty sure” it’s only a matter of time before further battlefield setbacks – thanks in no small part to US and European aid – before he completely loses his mind and starts deploying nukes.

2. Student Loan Relief Now you see it, now you don’t!!!…It’s pretty complex, but a Department of Education ruling means over three-quarters of a million borrowers could now be excluded from relief, which we don’t think they were entitled to anyway…Pay your debts, dammit…We do.

3. USA! USA! The current 3-hole staple…75 percent of kids are now too fat, stupid, or drug-addled to join Army…Citizens still earning marksmanship ribbons at record pace America…Entire country circling wagons, unable to face any viewpoint not in step with their own…America remains far closer to the oblivion that awaits her than the prosperity she once knew, with Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters “pretty sure” America has until half-century is out to show it can govern itself before someone comes in and does it for us.

4. DART Spacecraft American spacecraft successfully collides with asteroid in test to see if it could later course of rock heading towards earth…Impact was as scheduled and while the impact produced energy barely equiclenat to three (3) tons of TNT, even Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters are (mostly) smart enough to know that even a small change in trajectory could cause avoidance with Earth.

In 2018 – Saudi national and Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi is murdered in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey. Kashoggi was 59 and had long been a critic of the Saudi government. The Saudis convicted several people in a trial no one outside of Saudi Arabia took seriously and the general conclusion is that the assassination was ordered by the highest levels of the Saudi government. Turkey had initiated legal proceedings en absentia, but this past spring referred the matter back to Saudi Arabie.

In 1963 – Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers establishes a new World Series record for most strikeouts in a game in a 5-3 Dodgers win in Game 1 at Yankee Stadium. Koufax struck out 15 batters to break the record of 14 established by Carl Erskine of the Brooklyn Dodgers in Game 3 of the 1953 World Series and the record is now 17, by Bob Gibson of the St Louis Cardinals in Game 1 of the 1968 World Series. Koufax would win two games in the series that the Dodgers won in four games.

In 2010 – Bruno Mars is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of four consecutive weeks with Just The Way You Are. It was the first chart single for Mars, his first of 17 Top 10 hits, and his first of seven #1 songs. The song went to #1 in ten other countries, including Israel, Venezuela, and Great Britain, was Billboard’s 18th-biggest song of 2010, it’s 15th-biggest of 2011, and its 22nd-biggest of the decade. Later in the year, a version by the cast of the TV show Glee would peak at #40 on the Hot 100.

The Diary of a Nobody/October 1

It’s Read Free Sunday (RFS) at The Diary.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, October 1
It was End of the Month tonite and, as noted last week, the revenue numbers for the month were strong, with Assistant Front Desk Manager Q noting business is strong next month, too, and that already we’re not too far away from October’s goal…I asked if this was due to improper revenue forecasting by front desk management and Q was noncommittal, merely noting that nite auditors have no clue the pressures front desk managers go thru, adding that the very best nite auditors know when to keep their yaps shut, which was pretty funny.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow reports things are back to normal at the gym. Today’s Diary.

The big news is, unlike last week, all my Friday chicks were there today: Jackie, the Friday biddies, and Madam Public Health Director…Jackie didn’t see me tho because she was immersed in her phone – hopefully bickering with her husband over some trivial matter that will needlessly explode into something bigger – but the biddies and Madam Public Health Director were their usual selves.

In 331 BC – The fall of the Achaemenid Empire of ancient Persia begins when Alexander the Great defeats Darius III at the Battle of Gaugamela in what is now northern Iraq. Darius would escape but was later murdered and Alexander would later consolidate power. The empire was founded in 550 BC and got its name from an ancestor of the empire’s founder, Cyrus the Great. It remains one of the largest empires in history, at its peak ranging from Libya and Greece to India and from the Black Sea to the Arabian Sea.

In 1988 – Steffi Graf of West Germany becomes the only tennis player to win an Olympic gold medal and the Grand Slam in one year, defeating Gabriella Sabatini of Argentina 6-3, 6-3 in the gold medal match at the Seoul Summer Olympics. Earlier, Graf had won, in order, the Australian and French opens, Wimbledon, and the US Open, where she had also beaten Sabatini. History refers to the feat as the Golden Slam and Graff’s feat remains unmatched.

In 1983 – B.J. Thomas is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the only week with New Looks From an Old Lover. It was the ninth of 17 country hits for Thomas, his third of five Top 10 country hits, and his third and final #1 song. The song also went #6 country in Canada and was Billboard’s 18th-biggest country song of the year. Thomas also had five Top 10 hits and two #1s on Billboard’s Hot 100 in a chart career that lasted from 1966 to 2000.

The other fly in the ointment – and perhaps further proof, as if more was needed, that ol’ Sparrow will whine about absolutely anything – was the monitor had been standing on the old CPU and now was sitting on the desk, but ol’ Sparrow – ever the innovator – took some coffee table books celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Kuwait liberation that were lying around and put them on the desk and put the monitor of top of those.

In 1988 – The space shuttle Discovery launches from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on the first shuttle mission since the Challenger explosion in January 1986. Although it’s primary mission was to launch and return safely, the crew launched a tracking data relay satellite, conducted a variety of experiments, and landed safely on Oct 3, after 69 orbits of Earth. It was the first US space mission where all members of the crew had made prior trips into space since Apollo 11 in 1969.

In 1928 – The Detroit Tigers and the New York Yankees tie the American League for most hits in a game in a 19-10 Detroit victory. The Tigers had 27 hits and the Yankees 18 to tie the record of 45 done by the Philadelphia Athletics and the Boston Americans in 1902. Charlie Gernhinger of the Tigers had five hits and no Yankee had more than three. The all-time record is 51 by the Philadelphia Phillies and Chicago Cubs in 1922 and the extra-inning record is 58, by the Cleveland Indians and the Athletics in an 18-inning game in 1932.

In 1973 – Grand Funk, also known as Grand Funk Railroad, is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with We’re an American Band. It was the tenth chart single for the group, their first of four Top 10 hits, and their first of two #1s (Locomotion; two weeks, 1974). The song was written by band member Don Brewer and was produced by Todd Rundgren and the album of the same name was in its fourth of five consecutive weeks at #1 on the Billboard 200.

Some Philosophy Crap
The wisdom of the ages. Whatever.

Philosophy does not mean reading books about wisdom, it means training oneself in the practice of wisdom. The essence of the matter is that a man should so mold his life and conduct that his happiness shall depend as little as possible upon external things.

The Diary of a Nobody – It’s time for annual human trafficking training at the hotel. Today’s Diary.

We certainly do our part to stop human trafficking here at the hotel, constantly on the lookout for guests being led into the lobby with a chain…

In 1994 – The MS Estonia, carrying 989 people and en route from Estonia to Sweden via the Baltic Sea, sinks about halfway into its voyage. The Estonia was moving at approximately 14 knots and was listing to starboard slightly in heavy seas, when the bow cargo door separated from the ship, causing flooding. 852 people died, most of them Swedish, and the disaster remains the third-deadliest peacetime sinking of a European ship, behind the RMS Titanic and the RMS Empress of Ireland

In 1976 – Muhammad Ali retains his WBC and WBA heavyweight titles with a unanimous decision win over Ken Norton at Yankee Stadium in New York City. It was the eighth defense for Ali since winning the title, for the second time, from George Foreman in 1974 and he would lose the title to Leon Spinks in 1978. Norton was awarded the WBC title in 1978, losing it in his first title defense to Larry Holmes. Ali’s win was controversial, with Ali expressing surprise he had won and Norton claiming he was robbed.

In 1968 – Jeannie C. Riley is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the first of three consecutive weeks with Harper Valley P.T.A. The song also went #1 country and pop in Canada, peaked at #12 in Great Britain, and earlier had spent a week at #1 on the Hot 100. It was the first chart single for Riley, remains her only #1 country and pop hit, and earned her the Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. The song was written by Tom T. Hall.

The wisdom of the ages. Whatever.

In our desire to have government become our benefactor and sustainer, we have allowed it to become our taskmaster and overlord. As a result, we have become little more than well-fed, well-entertained slaves to the state. Freedom, as envisioned by our forefathers, is gone.
Chuck Baldwin
