The Diary of a Nobody/August 13

It’s Read Free Sunday (RFS) at The Diary.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, August 13
The big news is Amy didn’t have a pitcher of ice water waiting for me when we reported for duty tonite…She said she tried    I told her look, woman, trying’s nice and all, but ol’ Sparrow’s thirsty and prefers results…She laffed and said someone – there are no suspects – up and chained the pitcher she uses to the ice machine, so guests can fill their coolers without flooding the hallway…As it was, there weren’t any other pitchers in the back office and while we probably could’ve found one in the restaurant, we decided to ruff it and go with non-iced water.

The Daily Dose/August 13, 2022
By Gaylon Kent – America’s Funniest Guy™

Friends, your Daily Dose is taking the day off. The site changed servers over the past couple of days, and we spent no small amount of time performing webmaster duties.

Also, Friday’s Daily Dose and Diary of a Nobody entry were posted but got lost in the shuffle. We are pleased to report, though, that everything is back to normal and the site is up-to-date.

Click here to read today’s Diary of a Nobody entry.

Click here to read Friday’s Daily Dose. There is a link for that day’s Diary entry, too, and Sparrow has some pretty big news from his day off.

Apologies are issued for the inconvenience.

Thank you for reading,
Gaylon

The Diary of a Nobody/August 1

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Friday, August 12
The cat and I were pretty busy before ol’ Sparrow headed into the gym this morning because we didn’t do everything we normally do on Thursday…To wit, we didn’t get our little Tupperware deals filled with our supplements for the week and we didn’t finish our laundry…All that was taken care of, tho: our supplements are ready to go, and a full complement of underwear and undershirts and socks are folded and standing by on top of the dryer.

In 1898 – The Republic of Hawaii ceases to exist when it is annexed by the United States and the Hawaiian flag is replaced by the US flag in an elaborate ceremony at the royal palace. Hawaii had become a republic in 1894 and had been a kingdom from 1810-93. Hawaii would be organized into a territory in 1900 and would become the 50th state in 1959, the second US state after Texas to have once been an independent country. nation

In 1928 – The Amsterdam Summer Olympics come to a close, with 2,883 athletes having competed in 109 events. The Games produced several firsts: Greece was the first country to enter during the opening ceremonies and the host nation the last, and it was the first Olympics to be condensed into two weeks instead of being spread over several months. Korfball, an outdoor sport that involves throwing a ball into a basket, was a demonstration sport for the second and final time, with two Dutch teams competing.

In 1972 – Elton John is at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the fifth and final consecutive week with Honky Chateau. The album also went to #1 in Spain, peaked at #2 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 24th biggest album of 1972 and its 80th-biggest of 1973. The album produced two chart singles, the Top 10s Rocket Man and Honkey Cat. It and was the first of eight #1 albums for John, and the first of seven consecutive. The album was written by John and Bernie Taupin and was recorded at a French chateau.

The Daily Dose/August 11, 2022
By Gaylon Kent – America’s Funniest Guy™

Notes from around the human experience.

GET OUT YOUR HISTORY BOOKS: We go through this every year on this date, either here, in the popular On This Date segment or – if we’re feeling particularly frisky – both. To wit: 115 years ago on August 11, 1907, Ed Karger of the St Louis Cardinals pitched a perfect game in the second game of a doubleheader against the Boston Doves. It is not listed among official baseball perfect games because the game only went seven innings.

We’re In For Some Dry, Technical Matter, Aren’t We?: This wasn’t Karger’s fault. This was the second game of a doubleheader and both teams had trains to catch and, as was the custom of the era, it was agreed beforehand that the game would only go seven innings.

Can You Clarify This Further For Us? This means that seven innings constituted a regulation game.

Get Your Official Daily Dose Policy Right Here: We’ve long been of the opinion that Karger should be credited with a perfect game because he pitched the scheduled number of innings. It was a regulation, complete game, just like nine-inning perfect games are. Now, if the game had been scheduled for nine innings and only gone seven because of rain then, no, Karger would not be entitled to a place on the list because it wasn’t a regulation, complete game, it was a called game. Called games, as they should, have a separate listing in the record book.

But seven innings was a regulation game that day and we’ve never seen any reason why Karger should be penalized for this.

FunFact: The only umpire for the first game, Bob Emslie, had called it a day after the first game and fled, and Karger’s perfect game was umpired by two players, Fred Beebe of the Cardinals and Irv Young of the Doves. Players umpiring games were not completely unheard of back then, and Young was working his second-ever game while Beebe, who worked the plate, remains the only major league umpire whose only game was a perfect game.

The Bottom Line: If baseball isn’t going to include no-hitters for games scheduled for less than nine innings – like Madison Bumgarner’s last year – on the official list, then they shouldn’t count the wins and the losses, either. We’ll see you next year when we discuss this vital matter again.

In 1934 – The first federal prisoners arrive at the new maximum security prison on Alcatraz Island, off the coast of San Francisco. The initial roster of prisoners consisted of 137 men who were problems at other prisons. Previously, the facility had served as a US Army prison and Alcatraz closed in 1963 and is now a museum. Over the years 36 prisoners tried to escape, with 23 caught, eight dying, while five were never found.

In 1974 – Lee Trevino wins the PGA Championship, shooting a final round 69 to finish four under par and one stroke ahead of Jack Nicklaus at Tanglewood Park near Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It was the first of two PGA titles for Trevino and his fifth of six major titles, including two US Open and two British Open titles. It was the fourth and final time Nicklaus had finished second to Trevino in a major and this remains the only major hosted by Tanglewood.

In 1990 – Mariah Carey is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second of four consecutive weeks with Vision of Love. It was the first chart single for Carey, her first of 28 Top 10 hits, and her first of 19 #1 songs, a mark that his second only the Beatles’ 20 in Hot 100 history. The song also went to #1 in New Zealand and Canada, peaked at #9 in Great Britain, was in its first of two weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart, and was Billboard’s 6th-biggest song of the year.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow really needs to clean house. Today’s Diary.

One thing that can’t be deferred another week is vacuuming…Recall we blew that off last week, too, but this week a good Level II cleaning will be vital if the cat isn’t going to report us to Kitty Protective Services (KPS)…Thing is, tho, most of the blame for the need for a good vacuuming can be laid directly at the paws of the cat because she has been shedding up a storm this week…And not just hair, either, but clumps of it and all over the place, too: my bedroom, the kitchen table, and, especially, the chair, which she’s been occupying a lot recently.

In 1675 – The cornerstone of the Royal Greenwich Observatory in London is laid. The observatory had been founded by King Charles II in June to find a dependable way for mariners to reckon longitude at sea. The first time signal – a dropping ball at 1:00 pm – began in 1833 with observatory clocks accurate to within seven seconds a day, a figure unparalleled at the time. Greenwich became the prime meridian – zero degrees longitude – in 1884 and today the Royal Observatory is in Cambridge, with the Greenwich site now mostly a museum.

In 1888 – Tim Keefe of the New York Giants wins the final game of his single-season major league record 19-game winning streak in a 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Alleghenys. Keefe’s streak had started on June 23 with a win against the Philadelphia Phillies and would end on August 14 with a loss to the Chicago White Stockings. The mark was tied in 1912 by Rube Marquard of the Giants and still stands. The American League record is 16, done several times, and the all-time major league record is 24, by Carl Hubbel, also of the Giants, in the 1936-37 seasons.

In 1974 – Roberta Flack is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with Feel Like Makin’ Love. It was the sixth of eleven Top 40 hits for Flack, her fourth of five Top 10 hits, and her third and final #1 song. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #34 in Great Britain, was in its second of five weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart, and was Billboard’s biggest soul song of the year. The song was nominated for two Grammy Awards: Record of the Year and Best Pop Female Vocal Performance.

The oldest person to appear in a Davis Cup match was Vittorio Pellandra, who was 66 years old when he participated for San Marino in a doubles match vs Egypt in 2007, replacing an injured player. Pellandra, the team captain, was making his only Davis Cup appearance and was himself injured ten minutes into the match and retired.

The Daily Dose/August 9, 2022
By Gaylon Kent – America’s Funniest Guy™

Leading Off
Notes from around the human experience.

3…2…1…BLASTOFF AGAIN: We don’t like to write about the same topic over and over, but yesterday’s tidbit about the South Korean lunar orbiter and a recent item about the Apollo program being ahead of its time got us thinking that it was so far ahead of its time that a smart, prosperous county like South Korea is obliged to have it KPLO probe take four months to get to the moon when 50 years we could get an entire Apollo mission – to the moon and back – done in eight days.

Dry, Technical Matter: The KPLO is taking a fuel-efficient route that sees it heading out towards the sun near what is called Lagrange point L1 (there are five), a gravitationally-stable point about 930,000 miles away. When it almost gets there, it will allow gravity to pull it back towards the moon and will enter lunar orbit in December.

Do You Wonder Why You Don’t Get Invited To More Parties?: This route is actually being pioneered by the US lunar orbiter CAPSTONE, which was launched in June and is taking a similar route to the moon.

Back On Message: You know, some are achieving and maintaining states of arousal over the prospect of further lunar exploration – including our own Artemis mission which through crossed fingers and much prayer hopes to have humans back on the moon by 2025 – but we had humans on the moon 50 years ago. Forgive us if we’re yawning.

The Bottom Line: Apollo showed spirit, it showed guts, it showed our age-old desire to conquer the unknown. America took a flier on that spirit though, when we declined to send men to Mars and that’s our loss because we could have used that momentum to have stayed ahead of our time, and eventually made ahead of our time the stats quo. We missed out on untold technological advances who knows where we’d be now. Perhaps the latest space missions can recoup some of that loss, even if it’s taking them four months to get to the moon.

In 1944 – The US Forest Service authorizes the creation and use of Smokey Bear in an effort to help reduce forest fires. Smokey was created in part because many firefighters were away fighting World War II, leaving fewer able-bodied men to fight fires at home and the first posters featuring Smokey would appear in October. Smokey was an instant hit, inspiring a doll in 1952 and he even has his own zip code, 20252, in Washington, DC.

In 1900 – The US wins the first Davis Cup – then known as the International Lawn Tennis Challenge – taking an insurmountable 3-0 lead in the best of five match competition at the Longwood Cricket Club in Boston. The tournament was conceived by four members of the Harvard tennis team and the cup was named for Dwight Davis, who paid for the trophy. The fourth match was called at 9-9 in the second set and the final match was not played. The US has won the most Davis Cups with 32 titles.

In 1969 – Charlie Pride is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart for the only week with All I Have To Offer You (Is Me). It was the eighth Top 40 and Top 10 country hit for Pride and was his first of 29 country #1s in a chart career that spanned from 1966-89. Pride was the first Black to hit #1 on a Billboard country chart since the Nat King Cole Trio and Louis Jordan did it in 1944 and the song also went #3 country in Canada and peaked at #91 on the Hot 100. Pride died of COVID in 2020.
