It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…
Saturday, June 4 Boy, ol’ Sparrow was dead tired tonite…Readers keeping score at home know that between getting up at 2130 Tuesday and 2130 Friday ol’ Sparrow got about 12.5 hours of sleep, about half what was needed, and we felt it tonite…Everything was a half-step slow and counting the drawers was a chore, so much so the right drawer ended up being 80 cents short, an add total
And it was fitful rest, too, not a deep sleep at all, and yours truly woke up weary and crabby…

In 1855 – US Army Major Henry Wayne departs on a naval ship for the Mediterranian to acquire camels for the Army. He came back with 33 camels and the Camel Corps ultimate had 70 camels. Though the camels proved well-suited for duty in the American southwest, interest in the Camel Corps diminished during the Civil War, and the camels were either auctioned off or released. Wayne later served as a brigadier general for the Confederacy.
In 1958 – The San Francisco Giants establish a new major league record for most consecutive pinch-hit home runs in a 10-9, 11-inning loss to the Milwaukee Braves. The Giants set the mark with home runs from Hank Sauer and Bob Schmidt in the tenth inning to break the record of one, done pretty much every time there had been a pinch-hit home run in major league history. The mark has been tied several times since.
In 1983 – Lucille (You Don’t Do Your Daddy’s Will) by Waylon Jennings is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the only week. It was the 14th of 15 #1 country songs for Jennings in a chart career that ran from 1965-91 and the song also went #4 country in Canada. The song was written by Little Richard whose version went to #1 on Billboard’s Most Played in Jukeboxes soul chart and peaked at #21 on its Best Sellers in Stores pop chart in 1957.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow is pretty tired and declines to do the lawn. Today’s Diary.
However, by the time the dew had evaporated, neither mind nor body was willing to exert the effort, fairly understandably, if you ask me, so lawn maintenance was deferred, probably until Sunday, but the prospect of using some PTO at the VSO and doing it Friday cannot be eliminated.

In 1965 – Gemini 4 – the first US manned US spaceflight to last for more than one day – takes off from Cape Kennedy in Florida. The mission, commanded by James McDivitt and piloted by Ed White, lasted for four days and orbited the earth 66 times. The mission included the first spacewalk by an American, when White left the spacecraft for 20 minutes, though problems opening the hatch left it unclear if the hatch would close. An attempt to rendezvous with a spent stage of the launching rocket failed for a variety of reasons, including the lack of radar on Gemini 4.
In 1995 – Pedro Martinez of the Montreal Expos becomes the second major league pitcher to take a perfect game into extra innings in a 1-0 victory over the San Diego Padres. Martinez retired the first 27 Padres he faced before giving up a double to Bip Roberts to start the tenth inning. Martinez was relieved by Mel Rojas, who got the final two outs for the save. The first pitcher to take a perfect game into extra innings was Harvey Haddix of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who pitched 12 perfect innings and a 13-inning loss in 1959. The feat has not been duplicated.
In 1967 – The Monkees are at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the 17th of 18 consecutive weeks with More of the Monkees. It was the second chart album for the group and their second of four #1 albums, all consecutive. The album replaced their debut album The Monkees at #1 and all told the group spent 31 consecutive weeks at the top of the album chart. The album went to #1 in four other countries, including Norway and Great Britain, and produced three chart singles, including the #1 I’m a Believer.

We usually don’t drive that fast but when you can slot in behind someone it’s good for morale on the theory they’re the ones that will hit the deer, tho that theory is not backed by actual proof.
