The Sunday Bottom 5 6
A ranking of some things.
1. Russia/Ukraine Negotiations – SB5 pollsters ROFLTAO because exactly what is there to negotiate???…Russia has no reason for its unjust and brutal invasion…The only negotiating points are their immediate and complete departure, reparation payments, and having President Putin surrender himself for his war crimes trial.
2. Why? Why? Why? – World has stood by and watched horrors and atrocities before, so that’s nothing new, but the Ukrainian woman who asked why x3 after losing child makes a good point.
3. Donald Trump – You know, folks, would you tolerate an acquaintance who always lied to you, grabbed your wife and daughter by the pussy, and who was dumb enough to believe Colorado bordered Mexico???…We wouldn’t, either, so why do you tolerate this in a presidential candidate???…Which one of these elements continues to earn your support???
4. Tom Brady – Did we call it or what???…There was no way his retirement lasted, not as long as Brady was healthy, focused, and still good at the age of 73…SB5 pollsters “strongly suspect” Brady won’t leave until he’s carried off field following last NFL play.
5. Lia Thomas – Penn swimmer, born William Thomas, wins NCAA women’s national swimming title in 500-yard event …SB5 pollsters remain “pretty sure” this is wrong, that girls are entitled to compete against girls and not against those born as boys.
6. Never-Ending Tennis Matches The Isner/Mahout 70-68 fifth set at Wimbledon now etched in stone as longest match ever after French Open decides to go with fifth-set tiebreaker in championship matches…Yay: fans will never be obliged to sit through such nonsense again…Boo: fans will never be obliged to sit through such nonsense again.

In 1616 – Sir Walter Raleigh – English poet and explorer, among other things – is released from prison after serving 13 years for treason. Trouble for Raleigh began after the death of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603, when he was tried and convicted in a plot against her successor James I. Raleigh’s trial was notable because his main accuser was not allowed to testify, which later established a common law right to confront your accusers. Raleigh was beheaded a couple of years later and his embalmed head was – either perversely or tenderly – later presented to his widow.
In 1968 – Wilt Chamberlain of the Philadelphia 76ers becomes the first center in NBA history to lead the league in assists, with 12 assists in a 137-119 win over the Baltimore Bullets. Chamberlain finished the season with 702 assists, easily outdistancing Lenny Wilkens of the St Louis Hawks who had 679. Chamberlin’s average of 8.6 assists per game was second in the league behind Oscar Robertson’s (Cincinnati Royals) 9.7 assists per game and he remains the only NBA center to win the assist title.
In 1961 – Marty Robbins is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Sides chart – for the fourth of ten consecutive weeks with Don’t Worry. It was the seventh of 16 #1 country hits for Robbins and his 13th of 46 Top 10 country songs in a career that spanned from 1952 to 1983. The song also peaked at #3 on the Hot 100, Robbins’ third and final Top 10 pop hit.

The ultimate decider was that on the couch yours truly could get completely vertical whereas in the chair some slouching was involved and a full day of slouching probably wouldn’t be good from a posture standpoint…Besides, on a lazy day like today full verticalness was plainly called for.

In 1766 – The Stamp Act – a tax on the American colonies that required, among other things, that many documents be printed on paper produced in London carrying an embossed revenue stamp – is repealed when King George III of Great Britain gives royal assent to the act repealing it. The act had been passed in March 1665 to pay for British soldiers stationed in the colonies following the French and Indian War was unpopular in the colonies from the start. The phrase “no taxation without representation” was coined during colonial protests to the Stamp Act.
In 1981 – The Buffalo Sabres establish a new NHL record for most goals in a period in a 14-4 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Sabres scored nine goals in the second period to break the record of eight set by the Montreal Canadiens on March 8, 1922, and later tied many times. Gilbert Perreault led the Sabres with three goals in the period, all goals came against goalie Michel Larocque, and the record still stands.
In 1972 – Neil Young is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the only week with Heart of Gold. It was the first of two Top 40 hits for young and remains his only #1 song. The song also went to #1 in Young’s native Canada, peaked at #10 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 17th-biggest song of the year. In 1987 a version by Willie Nelson peaked at #44 on Billboard’s country chart.

In 1805 – The Kingdom of Italy is formed, replacing the Republic of Italy, with French Emperor Napoleon – who had been president of the Italian republic – proclaimed Napoleon I. At the time, the Kingdom of Italy consisted of what is today northern Italy, and Napoleon would be crowned in April at his capital at Milan. Napoleon abdicated both thrones in 1814 and the Kingdom of Italy split into two kingdoms, a duchy, and the Papal States.
In 1893 – The Montreal Hockey Club (MHC) wins the first Stanley Cup, defeating the Montreal Crystals 2-1 to finish in first place in the Amateur Hockey Association of Canada with a 7-1 record. It was the first of three Stanley Cups for the MHC, all consecutive, though the Stanley Cup trophy would later be awarded to the Montreal Athletic Association, the organization the MHC was affiliated with. The Stanley Cup came into the permanent possession of the NHL before the 1926-27 NHL season.
In 1951 – Perry Como is at #1 on Billboard’s Best Sellers in Stores chart – a predecessor to the Hot 100 – for the second of six non-consecutive weeks with If (They Made Me a King). As was common for the era, the song was a hit for a variety of other artists, including Jo Stafford (#8), Dean Martin (#14), and the Ink Spots (#23), and was the ninth of 13 #1 songs on an American pop chart for Como. Como’s last appearance on a Billboard chart came this past January when There’ No Place Like Home (For the Holidays) peaked at #29 on the Hot 100.

In 1802 – The Army Corps of Engineers is founded, when the Military Peace Establishment Act is signed by President Thomas Jefferson. The Corps’ original function was to build the US Military Academy at West Point, New York, and until the Civil War its superintendent was an engineer officer. In 1939 – The New York Rangers and the New York Americans tie the NHL record for most goals and most points in a period in an 11-5 Rangers’ victory. The record is now twelve, done twice, by the Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres in March 1981 and by the Edmonton Oilers and Chicago Blackhawks in December 1985. The team’s record of 26 points in a period has been eclipsed many times and is now 35, held by the Oilers and Blackhawks.
