I then open the orange container, just for funsies to see if their are drugs in it, and BOOM, there were drugs in it: some white rock, black rock, and a very small baggie with a white powder in it…Well, you don’t have to be a DEA agent to strongly suspect these substances are consistent with narcotics use…

History’s long march.

In 44 BC – Roman dictator Julius Caesar, head of the Roman Republic, is assassinated, stabbed to death in the Theater of Pompey in Rome. After an initial glancing blow by a senator named Casca, others joined in and History reports Caesar was stabbed 23 times. The assassins fled after doing their work and Caesar was eventually removed by three slaves and later cremated. The date is known as the Ides of March, a date set aside in Rome for religious observations and the settling of debts.

In 1869 – The National Association of Base Ball Players authorizes the Cincinnati Red Stockings to become the first professional baseball team in the US. The Red Stockings would sign ten players through November, would play their first game in May and would go 57-0 on the year. The team folded in 1870 and did not play in the National Association (1871-75), though a Cincinnati team was a charter member of the National League in 1876. The current Cincinnati Reds formed in the American Association in 1881 and joined the National League in 1890.

In 1975 – The Doobie Brothers are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with Black Water. It was the sixth of 16 Top 40 hits for the group, their second of five Top 10 songs, and was their first of two #1s (What a Fool Believes, one week, 1979). The song also peaked at #11 in Canada and was Billboard’s 15th-biggest song of the year. The Doobie Brothers’ last appearance on a Billboard singles chart was in 2011 when A Brighter Day peaked at #18 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow has relieved Q the past couple of nights at the hotel. Today’s Diary.

Q, however, couldn’t care less about taking care of me, so ol’ Sparrow is now obliged to make his own coffee and fetch his own ice water, a situation that might not mirror what’s going on in Ukraine right now, but nonetheless is certainly not good for personal morale…

History’s long march.

In 1967 – The permanent gravesite of President John F Kennedy opens at Arlington National Cemetery. Design of the permanent site had been completed in November 1964 and construction on the three acres set aside began the following year. Original plans had called for Kennedy to be buried in his native Massachusetts, next to the Kennedy’s infant son that had died in August 1963, but a suggestion to bury Kennedy at Arlington was approved by Jaqueline Kennedy. Gas for the eternal flame is provided without charge by a local utility.

In 1971 – Ken Rosewall of Australia wins the Australian Open, defeating defending champion Arthur Ashe of the US 6-1, 7-5, 6-3, at White City Stadium in Sydney. It was the third of four Australian Open titles for Rosewall and his tenth of 13 Grand Slam singles titles. Rosewall did not lose a set in the tournament, the first to do so at a Grand Slam in the Open era, and the tournament was the 17th and final Australian Open held in Sydney.

In 1992 – Mr Big is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the third and final consecutive week with To Be With You. It was the first chart single for the group, their first of three Top 40 hits, and remains their only #1 song. The song went to #1 in eleven other countries including Canada and Norway, peaked at #3 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 12th-biggest song of the year.

The Daily Dose/March 13, 2022
By Gaylon Kent – America’s Funniest Guy™

The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.

1. Russian/Ukrainian War There is no way this ends well for anybody…Ukraine will be leveled, Putin, as savage and misguided as Hitler, will end up dead, either murdered by loyal generals, by his people, or by a war crimes tribunal…The West, wisely unwilling to risk nuclear anihilation, will end up more impotent than ever.

2. Russian/Ukrainian War II Putin is already unjustly and savagely invading a country that was not a threat to him and he’s attacking hospitals and nuclear plants as SB5 pollsters “strongly suspect” a palace coup led by James Bond remains the only safe solution to this imbroglio.

3. Donald Trump Still a lying sexual predator who will always have blood on his hands for an ignorant, incompetent coronavirus response, though a partisan, bickering citizenry bears some of this burden, too…SB% pollsters “strongly suspect” Trump still believes that 1) the moon is part of Mars and that 2) the Revolution was won by Continental Army securing British airports.

4. NFL – You know guys, you get into bed with sportsbooks you should not be surprised when players start betting, too…And even though they were small, half-baked bets your aunt in Reno knows were completely whack, Calvin Ridley deserves his suspension…SB5 pollsters remain “pretty sure”  having teams and leagues receiving revenue from sportsbooks is just asking for trouble.

5. Major League Baseball Not that anybody cares, but lockout is over…Yay: both 7-inning games and that infernal runner on second in extra innings are gone…Boo: it is entirely possible that a tied All-Star Game will be decided by a home run derby…Yeah, really…Go read the CBA.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow (finally) offers a theory for the fluctuating gas mileage in the new ride. Today’s Diary.

When gas mileage is good, cruise control is always used, to prevent ol’ Sparrow from speeding and getting pulled over…In the winter, tho, cruise control isn’t used all that much because you don’t want to use it on bad roads, even at slow speeds, because with cruise control you can’t take your foot off the gas, a pretty useful tool in the snow…

History’s long march.

In 1567 – The Eighty Years’ War between provinces of what are now the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg against Spain begins with a Spanish victory in the Battle of Oosterweel near Antwerp. The war lasted 79 years and resulted in, among other things, the formation of the Dutch Republic separate from the Holy Roman Empire. History also refers to the war as the Dutch War of Independence.

In 1961 – Floyd Patterson of the US retains his world heavyweight boxing title with a 6th-round knockout over Ingemar Johansson of Sweden at Exhibition Hall in Miami. It was the third meeting between the two fighters: in June 1959 Johansson had defeated Patterson for the title, a title Patterson regained the following June. Johansson would not fight for the world title again, though he later won the European championship, while Liston would lose the title to Sonny Liston the following year.

In 1982 – The Go-Go’s are at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the second of six consecutive weeks with Beauty and the Beat. It was the first of five chart albums for the group, remains their only #1, and produced two Top 40 hits, Our Lips Are Sealed and We Got the Beat. The Go-Go’s formed in California in the late 1970s despite the fact none of the members knew how to play an instrument and it was the first album by an all-female band (as opposed to a group of singers like the Supremes) to hit #1.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, March 12
Assistant Front Desk Manager Q had everything ready when yours truly reported for duty: we were sold out and all guests were in: there were no rooms to rent and no pesky guest to bother me needing to be checked in, which is what you are looking for in the nite audit racket, especially during ski season when renting vacant rooms and people still needing to check-in can really clog up your nite.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow has lunch at the college dining hall. Today’s Diary.

Well, actually the sign said it was Salisbury steak – basically a mini meatloaf with brown gravy thrown on it, known as Nairobi trail markers in the Nav – but ol’ Sparrow knows chicken fried steak with white gravy when he sees it…I don’t understand this at all, what the hell are they teaching these kids???…To mislabel food offerings???…That you can just whip up whatever the hell you want and call it whatever the f*ck you want???…I can barely boil water and even I know what is and what is not Salisbury steak…

History’s long march.

In 1928 – The St. Francis dam, about 40 miles north of Los Angeles, collapses, resulting in a flood that kills at least 430 people. Several investigations were conducted, which generally concluded that an unstable soil foundation caused the collapse, perhaps due to ancient mudslides. It remains the second-highest death toll for a California disaster, trailing only the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which killed more than 3,000 people. The dam was completed in 1926.

In 1935 – The St Louis Eagles play their final home game in their only NHL season, a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings.  The Eagles finished the season 11-31-6 and in last place in the Canadian Division. The NHL assumed control of the franchise after the season, but couldn’t find a suitable buyer. The Eagles had begun play in 1883 as the Ottawa Senators, then an amateur team who had moved to St Louis prior to the season.

In 1949 – Blue Barron & His Orchestra are at #1 on Billboard’s Best Sellers in Stores chart – a predecessor to the Hot 100 – for the first of two consecutive weeks with Cruising Down the River. It was the third and final chart single for Barron on a Billboard chart and remains his only #1 hit. The song was replaced at #1 by a version by Russ Morgan & His Orchestra, a phenomenon not unprecedented on Billboard pop charts of the era.

Answer To The Last Trivia Question

The longest game in NCAA baseball history is 25 innings, when Texas defeated Boston College 3-2 in an NCAA regional playoff game in Austin on May 30, 1991. The NCAA Division II and III record books list records occurring in 22- and 23-inning games, but neither has an entry for a longest game.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow needs a new wiper blade. Today’s Diary.

Ed, who’s been working parts counters since the Model T, nodded his approval when Darrell – I think jokingly, tho it was tuff to tell – told him not to put a labor charge on the invoice, which led Ed to note yours truly was not only getting a top-quality wiper blade, but courtesy installation as well, which for some reason made me laff.

History’s long march.

In 1861 – The constitution of the Confederate States of America is adopted and sent to its seven states for ratification. It was very similar to the United States constitution, would be ratified in April, and would take effect the following February. It replaced a provisional constitution and remained in effect until the dissolution of the Confederacy after they got their ass handed to them in the Civil War. The original of the constitution still exists, housed at a rare books and manuscripts library at the Univesity of Georgia.

In 2004 – The Houston Cougars and San Diego State Aztecs establish an NCAA record for the highest attendance at a baseball game in a 4-0 Aztecs win. The game drew 40,106 fans to the first game ever played at Petco Park in San Diego, breaking the record of 27,673 established by LSU and Tulane at the Superdome in New Orleans in 2002. The record still stands.

In 1989 – Debbie Gibson is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second of three consecutive weeks with Lost in Your Eyes. It was the sixth of nine Top 40 hits for Gibson, her fifth and final Top 10 hit, and her second and final #1 song. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #34 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 13th-biggest song of the year. Gibson last hit a Billboard chart in 2020, when Girls Night Out peaked at #4 on the dance chart.
