The Diary of a Nobody/December 1

It’s Read Free Sunday at The Diary.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, December 11
There was a bit of intrigue at the front desk tonite…It was about 2330 and it had been sufficiently busy that ol’ Sparrow had just started in counting the cash drawers when two gents approach the front desk…One gent points at the drawer being counted and says it’s OK for me to finish “what you’re doing” but they do have something important to discuss…The other guy looks like the cop he turned out to be so something’s up, but since neither was holding a dagger dripping with blood, I finished counting the quarters and then closed the drawer and asked how I could be of service.

The long march to today.

In 1972 – Humans arrive on the moon for the last time when Apollo 17 astronauts Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt land following a four-day voyage from Earth. The crew spent three days on the moon and a bit more than 22 hours exploring the lunar surface over the course of three moonwalks. Cernan and Schmitt were the eleventh and twelfth men to walk on the moon and the mission, including command module pilot Ronald Evans, would return to Earth on the 19th.

In 1866 – The first trans-Atlantic yacht race begins with three American yachts getting underway from Sandy Hook, New Jersey, sailing for the Isles of Sicily off the English coast. The race was won by the Henrietta, commanded by Samuel Samuels, in 13 days, 21 hours, 55 minutes. Prior to her racing career, Henrietta had seen service for the Union in the Civil War and with the Revenue Marine Service, now the Coast Guard.

In 1999 – Smooth by Santana featuring Rob Thomas is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the eighth of twelve consecutive weeks. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #3 in Great Britain, was Billboard’s-19th biggest hit of 1999 and its 2nd-biggest of 2000. Smooth remains the only song to appear on two Billboard end-of-decade charts, ranking 41st in the 1990s and 33rd for the Double Aughts and the song also ranked second on Billboard’s 60th Anniversary Hot 100 in 2018. It was the first of two #1s for Santana in a chart career that began in 1969.

The long march to today.

Due to time constraints, today’s On This Date features items from the past two years. Apologies are issued.

In 1936 – King Edward VIII of Great Britain announces his intention to abdicate the throne so he can marry his American girlfriend, Wallis Simpson, who was once divorced and then in the process of divorcing her second husband. It took effect the following day when Parliament passed an act authorizing the abdication, which Edward then gave his royal assent to. Edward was succeeded by his brother Albert, who reigned as George VI. Edward and Simpson married the following year and the throne is now occupied by Elizabeth II.

In 1972 – Quarterback Jim Hart and receiver Bobby Moore – now known as Ahmad Rashad – of the St Louis Cardinals establish a new NFL record for the longest non-scoring pass play, a 98-yard pass in a 24-14 win over the Los Angeles Rams. Moore caught Hart’s pass at the Cardinals’ 40-yard-line and was tackled by Al Clark at the one-yard line. The record still stands.

In 1977 – Dolly Parton is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the second of five consecutive weeks with Here You Come Again. It was Parton’s sixth of 22 #1 country hits and her twelfth of 39 Top 10 country hits. The song also peaked at #3 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and was Billboard’s second-biggest country song and the 60th biggest pop hit of 1978. The song was written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow has a busy day and goes out to lunch. Today’s Diary.

Lunch was at the dining hall of the local JC because yours truly was in the mood for some all-you-can-eat access to really average food served at incorrect temperatures…

The long march to today.

In 1935 – American newspaperman Walter Liggett is shot to death in a gangland-style shooting behind his Minneapolis home. Liggett had returned to his home state after a long career in New York City and was shot while leaving his car in front of his wife and daughter. Despite the shooter being identified by four witnesses as Twin Cities mobster Isadore Blumenfeld, Blumenfeld was acquitted at his trial.

In 1935 – The Heisman Trophy – awarded to college football’s best player and then known as the Downtown Athletic Club Trophy – is awarded for the first time to Jay Berwanger, a halfback for the University of Chicago. The award would become the Heisman Trophy the following year, named after a director of the Downtown Athletic Club. Berwanger was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles but declined to play professional football.

In 1967 – Daydream Believer by the Monkees is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second of four consecutive weeks,  the third and final #1 song for the group. The song went to #1 in four other countries including Canada and Ireland, peaked at #5 in Great Britain and because it charted in both the 1967 and 1968 survey periods was Billboard’s 94th biggest song of 1967. In 1980 a version by Anne Murray peaked at #12 on the Hot 100 and at #3 on Billboard’s country chart.

The Diary of a Nobody – There’s a ski team from China in-house, and Sparrow has noticed a Chinese gentleman in the lobby the past couple of nights. Today’s Diary.

I’ve worked enuff graveyard to recognize someone on the clock and trying to stay awake when I see one because every now and then he’d put his head on the table…He could be in charge of guarding the skis – or, perhaps, preventing defections – but if that’s the case he’s not on post and I don’t think a Chinese would risk being away from his post because they shoot people for things like that in China.

The Bottom Ten/NFL Week 15 – The Lions throw a wrench into the race for The Dan Henning Trophy – symbolic of NFL Bottom Ten supremacy – by winning.

Sure, there are three ten (10)-loss teams, but the Lions have a win and a tie, and in the what-have-you-done-for-me-lately Bottom Ten you’re only as good as your last loss, and both the Jaguars and the Texans got blown out last week.

The long march to today.

In 1980 – John Lennon, a former member of the Beatles, is shot to death outside his New York City apartment by Mark David Chapman. Lennon had arrived home at about 10:50 pm after spending the evening at a recording studio when Chapman shot him in the back from about ten feet away, with Lennon later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. Chapman would later plead guilty to second-degree murder, had been denied parole eleven times and remains incarcerated in upstate New York.

In 1940 – The Chicago Bears establish NFL records for most points and the largest margin of victory in an NFL game, defeating the Washington Redskins 73-0 in the NFL Championship Game in Washington, D.C. The Bears also established NFL records with eight interceptions and 382 rushing yards, marks later broken and which remain NFL postseason records. The single-game points and margin of victory records still stand. The game was also the first NFL title game to be broadcast nationwide on radio, with Red Barber calling the action for Mutual Radio.

In 1979 – Styx is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with Babe. The song also went to #1 in Canada and South Africa, peaked at #6 in Great Britain and due to when it charted was Billboard’s 20th-biggest hit of 1980. It was the eighth Top 40 hit for the group, their third Top 10 hit and remains their only #1 song. The song was not intended to be put on an album, with the original demo track being used, with additional guitar work added later.
