The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things from the week that was.

1. Alec Baldwin Sunday B5 pollsters hardly Mr Firearms, but even they know the first rule when picking up a firearm is presume it’s loaded until you yourself have personally verified otherwise…Had you followed this rule, Hollywood wouldn’t be minus a cinematographer right now.

2. American Athletic Conference With major division college conferences changing membership left and right, AAC ensures membership will never, ever change by adding loser colleges – Charlotte, FAU, North Texas, Rice, UAB, UTSA – no one else could ever possibly want.

3. Donald Trump – The 3-hole staple…Hey Donny, you are still a lying sexual predator who believes 1) the moon is part of Mars and 2) that the Revolution was won by the securing of British airports…A question for Trump fans: which one of these elements continues to earn your support???

4. 2021 World Series With games starting well past 8pm and lasting well over three (3) hours, kids all over eastern time zone looking forward to nodding off well before 7th-inning stretch…SB5 pollsters “pretty sure” only real question is whether this will be lowest-rated World Series ever or second-lowest rated World Series ever.

5. President Biden Fact Check While President Biden doesn’t keep fact-checkers busy 24/7 like President Trump did, he’s holding his own…Click here for the latest presidential missteps, courtesy of the AP.

The Diary of a Nobody – At the hotel, Sparrow takes command of the cash drawer. Today’s Diary.

Look, there is no reason to have more coins in a tray than there are in a roll, so I took 50 of each and put them in separate baggies and put these in the drawer…Officially, this was done so Tammy will be spared having to count so many coins but let’s be honest here, saving ol’ Sparrow from having to count them again tomorrow was key, too.

The long march to today.

In 1929 – The Wall Street Crash of 1929 – which actually began on Sept 4 – continues with the largest single-day sell-off to date, 12.9 million shares, though some late buying by banks to prop the market up worked for a couple of days, staving off disaster until the following week. The Dow had hit an all-time high of 381.2 on Sept 3 and would close at 230.07 on Tuesday, October 29. The Dow would bottom out on July 8, 1932 closing at 41.22 and would not reach 381.2 again until November 23, 1954,

In 2002 – Patrick Roy of the Colorado Avalanche establishes a new NHL record for most games played by a goalie in a 3-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes. Roy played in his 972nd game to break the record established by Terry Sawchuck from 1949-70. Roy would retire after the season with 1,029 games played and the record is now held by Martin Brodeur who played in 1,266 games from 1992-15. Roy’s total is now third on the all-time NHL list, behind Robert Luongo (1,044).

In 1942 – The Billboard soul chart – then known as the Harlem Hit Parade – debuts with Andy Kirk & His Twelve Clouds of Joy at #1 for the only week with Take It and Git. The chart tracked songs that were popular in Harlem jukeboxes and Billboard would debut a best-sellers chart in 1948, an airplay chart in 1955 and its first unified soul chart in 1958. Today the chart is known as the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and the current #1 song is Industry Baby by Lil Naz X and Jack Harlow which is in its eighth non-consecutive week at the top.

The Diary of a Nobody/October 23

Indeed, Read Free Sunday (RFS) rolls on at The Diary.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, October 23
There was some modest intrigue with both cash drawers tonite.

First, the right drawer – aka ol’ Sparrow’s home drawer – was $1.45 over, an odd amount to be over because, as noted, everything sold at the sundry stand ends in either a whole dollar or a half-dollar, including tax…So I recounted the dimes and the nickels and even the ones and it all came out the same…For some reason, yours truly didn’t want to drop the $1.45, so a nickel was found in a drawer in the back office and tossed in there so a dollar-fifty could be dropped.

I had to laff because, Christ, yours truly hadn’t bounced a check since my 20s, when it was a rather common occurrence and yours truly habitually led the league in NSF fees.

In 1973 – President Richard Nixon agrees to surrender subpoenaed audio tapes of his Oval Office conversation to the Senate Watergate Committee. The tapes had first been subpoenaed in July and Nixon only turned them over after evasion and compromise had failed. The taping system had been installed in 1971 and disclosed the previous July by White House aide Alexander Butterfield during testimony before the US Senate. Nixon would hold on to the presidency until August 1974, when he resigned, still the only US president to do so.

In 1964 – The first gold medals in Olympic volleyball are awarded at the Tokyo Summer Games. Japan won the women’s gold medal, winning the six-team round-robin tournament with a 5-0 record over the 4-1 Soviet Union and the 3-2 Polish team. In the men’s tournament, the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia both finished 8-1 with the Soviets getting the gold medal based on defeating the Czechs on Oct 18. Beach volleyball became an Olympic sport in 1992.

In 1976 – Chicago is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with If You Leave Me Now. It was the 19th Top 40 hit for the group, their twelfth top 10 hits and their first of three #1 songs and the song also went to #1 in six other countries including South Africa and Great Britain. The song also won Grammy Awards for Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) and for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus. In 1993 a version by Chess peaked at #67 in Germany.

In 1966 – The Supremes are at #1 on Billboard’s album chart – then known as the Top LPs chart – for the first of two consecutive weeks with The Supremes A’ Go-Go. The album produced two chart singles including the #1 You Can’t Hurry Love and the album also peaked at #15 in Great Britain and was in its first of four non-consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul album chart.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow’s getting old and can’t even sit down as long as he used to. Today’s Diary.

…ol’ Sparrow does an awful lot of sitting and, almost incredibly, this is starting to take its toll!!!…I am not making this up…I can no longer sit forever with impunity: both knees start to whine and, to a lesser extent, the thighs do, too…

In 1774 – The first US flag with the word “liberty” on it is adopted in Taunton, Massachusetts. It was a red flag with the British flag in the canton and the words “liberty” and “union” sewn on near the bottom. The original design of the flag is unknown, but the current rendition was adopted as Taunton’s city flag in 1974. It is also the city flag of Weymouth, New Jersey and was flown at the Jan 6 insurrection at the US Capitol.

In 1980 – The Philadelphia Phillies win their first World Series title, defeating the Kansas City Royals 4-2 in Game 6 at Veterans Stadium. Phillies third baseman Mike Schmidt was named the MVP of the series and this game, with 54.9 million viewers, remains the World Series’ most-watched game. The Phillies had entered the National League in 1883, had lost the World Series in 1950 and 1915 and won another one in 2008.

In 1972 – Chuck Berry is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with My Ding-a-Ling. The song also went to #1 in Ireland, Canada and Great Britian, peaked at #42 on Billboard’s soul chart and was Billboard’s 15th-biggest song of the year. Despite his popularity and influence over the years, this remains Berry’s only #1 pop hit. The song was written by Dave Bartholomew, whose 1952 release did not chart.

The Red Sox would later defeat the St Louis Cardinals in the World Series in four games.
