The Daily Dose/July 19, 2020
By Gaylon Kent
America’s Funniest Guy

The Sunday Bottom 5
The very best of the very worst of the week that was.

1. Joe Biden Few nations have been as poorly governed as America is right now and you are nowhere to be found…A charismatic, visionary candidate would have America already counting the days until his inauguration and you’re laying low despite fact modern technology makes access to millions of people instantaneous.

2. 2020 ElectionSunday Bottom 5 pollsters remain “pretty sure” Nov 3 election will go off as planned, but let’s keep our eyes and ears open…President Trump is not evil – he’s merely selfish, ignorant and incompetent – but others could seize on current circumstances to advise him to declare martial law, something that usually only happens in other countries, but is now – almost incredibly – eligible to happen hear.

3. Washington Former RedskinsNFL team announces its changing nickname that probably should not have been adopted in the first place not because team has conscience but for the only reason that matters: it was starting to hit them in the wallet…NFL-themed names being considered as replacements include: Concussions, False Starts and Non-Guaranteed Contracts.

4. Federal Executions First three federal executions since 2003 carried out this week…Strong death penalty deterrent factor shown by fact murder rate actually down a bit the past 17 years…This nation has executed innocent people, with Sunday Bottom 5 pollster still “pretty sure” death penalty should be abolished for this reason alone.

5. President Trump Fact Check The 5-hole staple, click here for the latest lies from our president.

The Diary of a Nobody: Sparrow frets about only having four hours to get ready for work. Today’s Diary.

Proof that yours truly will whine about absolutely anything can be found in the fact that I am whining about today’s sleep session…Not about the 50-hour weeks – of course not, that’s what we live, er, sleep, for, but regular readers of this crap will recall that from time to time I only get four hours or so on Saturdays and while I whine about that, too, that is extra time for project work and reading and whatnot…When you wake up at 1800 sometimes you think you are rushing morning routine when you only have four hours to get out the door.

Backstairs at the Monte Carlo: MCSD is getting some new uniforms.

After three months of consideration, with input from not only Randy Morton, the boss here at Monte Carlo, but also the chairman of MGMMirage Resorts and maybe even Wayne Newton himself, it has been decided our new uniforms will be white, button-up shirts with black slacks.

This will be a change from our current uniform of white, button-up shirts and black slacks.

Get unlimited access to these two American classics for only $2.99, a price that will not last forever. Click on the button. Now.

History’s long march to today.

In 1843 – The SS Great Britain is launched, the first ocean liner with an iron hull and screw propulsion. A passenger ship, the Great Britain could carry 360 passengers and a crew of 120 and she was converted to an all-sail vessel 1881. She was actually scuttled and sunk off the Falkland Islands in 1937 and was raised, repaired and towed back to Britain in 1970 and is now a museum ship in Bristol Harbor.

In 1903 – Maurice Garin of France wins the first Tour de France bicycle race, winning the final stage in Paris. Garin won the first of the six stages in addition to the last two and led the whole way, winning by 2 hours and 59 minutes over Lucien Pothier, also of France. The race had started on July 1 in Paris and remains Garin’s only Tour de France title. He would win the race the following year, but he and three others were disqualified four months after the 1904 race for reasons that were never made public and the official Tour records were lost during World War II.

In 1980-  Billy Joel is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me. The song spent 19 weeks in the Top 40, including eleven weeks in the Top 10. It also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #14 in Great Britain and was Billboard’s ninth biggest song of the year. The song was Joel’s eleventh of 31 Top 40 hits and his first of three #1 songs.

The Diary of a Nobody/July 18

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, July 18
You have to be careful when a guest calls looking to extend their stay…You cannot immediately say yes, so when 257 called requesting to stay another nite and I had guests at the needing service, I jotted the room number down and told her I would get back to her.

Backstairs at the Monte Carlo/December 14 & 15

December 14
After three months of consideration, with input from not only Randy Morton, the boss here at Monte Carlo, but also the chairman of MGMMirage Resorts and maybe even Wayne Newton himself, it has been decided our new uniforms will be white, button-up shirts with black slacks.

This will be a change from our current uniform of white, button-up shirts and black slacks. I’ve seen the new shirts. They look like regular white dress shirts, though Monte Carlo Security will be embroidered above the left pocket.

Our current shirts are more military-ish. They have epaulets and two pockets with flaps with Velcro tabs and permanent military creases.

The new shirts do not have creases, and the one pocket does not have a flap, which means my notebook and glasses will be falling out left and right. Gone will be our badges and utility belts, which is hardest to take because they’re a big part of the Reid/Malloy fantasy.

Russ, manning the employee entrance, broke a major crime ring last night when a female employee who works at one of the retail shops tried to leave with a bag full of stuff she shouldn’t have tried to leave with.

Actually, she had a receipt for some of the items, but she didn’t have written authorization for the stuff she hadn’t paid for so Russ drew the logical conclusion she was stealing them.

Here is your Henry lineup for tonight:

Henry 1 – moi
Henry 2 – Coleman
Henry 3 – Lee

X-Ray gets the broom handle, as Coleman pulls some OT from day shift.

December 15
Had the rare guest stuck in the elevator call last night. It was about 0400 when all three Henry units were sent to the 23rd and 24th-floor elevator cores because elevator 13 appeared to be stuck between the 23rd and 24th floors.

We all ended up on 24, which is academic because there really isn’t anything we can do. We certainly aren’t going to climb down and rescue them. Engineering will take charge and get them out and we’re just standing by to assist when we finally get around to releasing them from their captivity.

It took about 40 minutes and the four Canadian guys were very good about it. They were from Beaumont, Alberta and I got the impression they really wished the front desk manager, Penelope, would’ve left them alone because she was asking if there was anything she could do for them.

They definitely could’ve gotten a comped breakfast out of it, and probably even a limo ride to the airport. The Monte Carlo is very interested in keeping guests happy. If they had suggested a comped suite on New Year’s Eve Penelope would’ve laughed, complimented them on their obvious sense of humor, and taken care of their room for the night. As it was, they had a late flight out, so Penelope immediately authorized a 5 pm checkout, which is really sweet. Check out time is 11 am, and it is a lot nicer having a room during that time than not having one.

That was only my second call of the night. Earlier, Coleman and I had a welfare check. That was it.

Here is your Henry lineup for tonight:

Henry 1 – moi
Henry 2 – Lee
Henry 3 – X-Ray

I know you’re as glad to see X-Ray back as I am.

The Diary of a Nobody: Sparrow is no longer bright enough to notice when some tree-trimming he’d arranged for is completed.

…this meant I didn’t notice it Wednesday when I drove home, all day Thursday when I came and went from The Shire several times and this morning when I left for the VSO.

Backstairs at the Monte Carlo: Gaylon works a double and discovers swing shift has a new break policy.

Also, you no longer get two 10-10’s on swing shift, they are now giving everyone one 20 minute break, called 483. Some were whining about it, simply because we’ll whine about anything, but I kinda liked it. I had 482 at 1700 and 483 came at 2145 and I was able to sit in the EDR and enjoy a cup of coffee at leisure.

$2.99. That’s all it costs to enjoy The Diary of a Nobody and Backstairs at the Monte Carlo for the rest of your life. Click on the button because this offer will not last forever.

History’s long march to today.

In 1290 – Jews, numbering several thousand, are thrown out of England when King Edward I issues the Edict of Expulsion, culminating two centuries of Jewish persecution in England. The edict remained in force through the middle of the 17th century, when Oliver Cromwell allowed them to return. Jews had first come to England in 1066 with William the Conqueror.

In 1891 – The Fargo Red Stockings and Grand Forks Black Stockings of the Red River Valley League play to a 25-inning, 0-0 tie in Devil’s Lake, North Dakota. Pitchers William Gibbs of Grand Forks and George Raymer of Fargo both pitched complete games, though neither got credit for a shutout because neither team won. The game took 4 hours and 10 minutes, was the second game of a doubleheader and was only called because both teams needed to catch a train. The game remains the longest scoreless tie in the history of professional baseball.

In 1970 – Tammy Wynette is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the third and final week with He Loves Me All the Way. It was the eighth of 20 #1 songs for Wynette and the song also peaked at #2 on Canada’s country chart and at #97 on Billboard’s Hot 100. Before earning her living as a singer, Wynette had been, among other things, a cosmetologist and continued to renew her license annually in case she ever needed a day job again.

The Diary of a Nobody: Sparrow has found a tasty, new chicken salad. Today’s Diary.

The retailer has a really good new chicken salad…I saw it at the one in town last week and there are actually two types: rotisserie flavored and my favorite, the one with cranberries and pecans and whatnot in it…It makes a great sandwich and I’m even keeping some at the Veterans Service Office (VSO)…It costs about $4 and I got three sandwiches out of the small tub so it’s a pretty good value…They’re in the deli at the retailer in the next county and I actually had to ask some hapless employee where they were and he took me right to them.

Backstairs at the Monte Carlo: Gaylon will soon be packing heat.

The big news is I am finally going to get armed. MCSD is getting new guns. The old ones, which are still used by outside units, are some sort of revolver and the new ones are semi-autos or Uzis or something like that. I don’t really know that much about guns, but I’m going to be packing one anyway.

There is still time to get in on the very special $2.99 offer to read both of these American classics. Click on the button to get started.

History’s long march to today.

In 1996 – TWA Flight 800 – service from New York City to Rome via Paris – explodes 12 minutes after takeoff from John F Kennedy International Airport. After the usual suspicions about it being a terrorist attack subsided, a federal investigation determined the explosion was likely caused by a fuel tank explosion caused by a short circuit. All 230 people on board died and this remains the third-deadliest aviation accident in US history.

In 1976 – The Montreal Summer Olympics begin. The Games featured 92 countries and 6,084 athletes and the Games were opened by Her Majesty, Elizabeth II, the Queen of Canada. Among the competitors were Princess Anne of Great Britain, daughter of Queen Elizabeth II and Taro Aso, a future prime minister of Japan. Women competed in basketball, team handball and rowing for the first time and Andorra, Antigua and Barbuda, the Cayman Islands and Papua New Guinea all participated in their Summer Games.

In 1965 – The Rolling Stones are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second of four consecutive weeks with (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction. The song went to #1 in seven other countries, including Norway, Austria and Great Britain and was Billboard’s third-biggest song of the year. It was the sixth Top 40 hit for the group, their third of 23 Top 10 hits and their first of eight #1 songs. It ranked 346th on Billboard’s 60th Anniversary Hot 100 in 2018.
