It’s Sunday Spaghetti Nite (SSN) at The Shire. Today’s Diary.

Wrong-o…We had exactly half a jar of parmesan cheese, sufficient, perhaps, for a normal spaghetti dinner for two, but only enuff if The Wife severely rations the amount she uses and, of course, a growing boy like yours truly has his Parmesan cheese needs, too…We barely subsisted…Fortunately, Sparrow’s Secret Blend (SSB) of Italian sausages for my famous chunks – not meatballs, chunks – for my famous sauce were extra-good and saved the day, but lesson learned for next time: always buy Parmesan cheese.

In 1542 – An expedition led by Spanish explorer Francisco de Orellana completes the first recorded navigation of the Amazon River, a journey that had begun on the Napo River in northeast Ecuador. Orellana then returned to Spain, eventually returning to the Amazon with a commission to found cities and rule the area. The mission was marked by intrigue and disease and Orellana would die of illness in November 1546. The 44 survivors of his mission were later rescued by a Spanish ship and settled throughout Central and South America.

In 1912 – Owen “Chief” Wilson of the Pittsburgh Pirates ties and then establishes a new major league record for triples in a season, hitting his 30th, 31st and 32nd triples as the Pirates split a doubleheader with the Boston Braves. Wilson broke the record of 31 that had been held by Dave Orr (1886, New York Metropolitans, American Association) and Heinie Reitz (1894, Baltimore Orioles, National League). Wilson would finish the season with 36 triples, a record that still stands.

In 1972 – Looking Glass is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for their only week, as Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl) moves up from #2. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #7 on Billboard’s Easy Listenting chart – now known as the Adult Contemporary chart – and was Billboard’s 12th biggest song of the year. Only a #33 hit the following year, Jimmy Loves Mary-Anne, prevented Looking Glass from being a one-hit wonder.

The Sunday Bottom Ten
The very best of the very worst of the week that was:

  1. President Trump, King Of The Jews – Instigator-in-Chief tells Jews who don’t vote for him they possess “either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty”…Hardly the first time Jews have been accused of being disloyal, with some pointing out this has sometimes led to their wholesale slaughter.
  2. Fake NewsFrom the Amazon to Instagram to North Dakota, click here for recap of stuff that really didn’t happen…Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters “pretty sure” they can remember time when Americans didn’t believe stuff like this.
  3. USA Basketball78-game international winning streak has gone down under, as Americans lose to dreaded Australia in tune-up game for basketball World Cup tournament…Fans, though, take heart in fact roster of Americans who chose not to play in tournament could have named the score against any team in tournament.
  4. MLB UniformsAll black visitor uniforms, all white home uniforms great for color-blind fans, difficult for fans who like seeing things like logos, names and numbers…Still though, if it helps distract us from home run derby game has become, we’ll take it.
  5. President Trump Fact CheckClick here for latest misinformation from president who will say whatever’s required to draw as much attention as possible to himself.

The Wife makes trout salad. Today’s Diary.

With plenty of trout leftover from Thursday, The Wife made trout salad tonight…It was kind of funny…She was sitting at the kitchen table when I got home from workout and had the trout mostly fileted and had some lemon, mayonnaise, salt, pepper and celery out but nonetheless declared she had no idea what she was doing.

Good…The Wife has enormous kitchen skills and every time she says this she produces something wonderful and it was no different this time…Even she herself admitted it was “really good”, which it was and offhand I’m calling it Trout Salad of the Year.

In 1944 – Paris is liberated from Nazi control, as German commander Dietrich von Choltitz surrenders to Allied personnel, despite orders from Adolf Hitler that Paris not be surrendered until it was “lying in complete debris”. Liberation followed a six-day battle that had begun with the French resistance and had seen assorted French elements enter the city the day before. Paris had been ruled by the Nazis since June 1940.

In 1875 – Matthew Webb, an English mariner, becomes the first person to swim the English Channel unaided. Smeared in porpoise oil and accompanied by three boats, Webb made the crossing in roughly 21 hours and 40 minutes. Though the distance from Dover, England to Calais, France is only a bit more that 25 miles as the crow flies, It’s estimated that Webb swam about 41 miles. Webb died in 1883 while attempting to swim rapids located near Niagara Falls.

In 2019 – Old Town Road by Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus is in its record-extending 20th week at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – currently known as the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart. After an equally record-breaking 19 weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, the song dropped to #3 this week, replaced at #1 by Bad Guy by Billy Eilish, which had spent nine of the past eleven weeks at #2. Old Town Road has gone to #1 on pop charts in 13 other countries, including Great Britain, China and Hungary.

Notes from around the human experience…

HIDE THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN: Baseballs are being hit out of major league stadiums at a record pace this year. Teams are establishing records for home runs hit and given up and it’s not even Labor Day yet. With so many baseballs being hit in the air we found ourselves wondering if outfielders are making more putouts this year than in past years.

Fabulous: Few enjoy research as we do here at The Daily Dose, so when we found ourselves still wondering about this vital stat the following day, we decided to find out.

Dry, Technical Matter: There are, of course, other ways for an outfielder to make a putout than to catch a fly ball. He could, for example, tag a runner out in the infield or be credited with a putout on spectator’s interference. Such instances are statistically insignificant and, for the purposes of today’s research, are ignored.

I’ll Take Dry, Technical Matter For $500, Alex: It wasn’t as hard as we thought. At first, we thought we might be obliged to actually add up the number of putouts outfielders had amassed – work we were prepared to do – but some research into the research required showed the numbers we wanted – like a lot of things in life – were there for the taking; all we had to do was show the diligence to find them.

We have a variety of sources we use for looking up stuff and we are not going to tell you what they are, but at one site all we had to do was click on a season, click on Fielding, then Outfield and BOOM!, there were the outfield fielding stats for each team for that season, with totals conveniently added up at the bottom. From there it was a simple matter to divide the total putouts by the number of games played for the average number of outfield putouts per game.

God Bless All Of You: While thrilled with this development, we weren’t prepared to research every goddamned season since 1876, so we figured the totals for 2019 and the 14 other seasons that ended in a 9.

Fly In The Ointment: The results weren’t as exciting as we thought they might be.  Actually, they were the opposite of what we suspected might be the case. We expected the number of outfield assists per game to be high, but so far in 2019 major league outfielders are averaging fewer putouts per game (12.1) than they were in 2009 (13.1), a figure that was unchanged from 1999.

FunFact: In fact, 2019 is the fourth-lowest of the years we sampled and the lowest since 1969 (11.1).

Now You Know: The year with the highest average of outfield assists per game was 1949 (14.3) and the lowest was the first year surveyed, 1879 (10.0)

2006 – Pluto is dropped from the roster of planets in the Solar System by the International Astronomical Union. It is now classified as a dwarf planet, leaving the Solar System with eight planets. Some very smart people have very dull arguments about this, and the technical reasons for this are, of course, beyond both the scope of this feature and our comprehension. In laymen’s terms, though, Pluto was done in by the fact it is not gravitationally dominant in its area, as both Pluto and one of its moons, Charon, rotate around another point, called a barycenter in the trade.

1951 – Five days after sending a midget to the plate in a game, St Louis Browns owner Bill Veeck, trying to liven up an otherwise meaningless game against the equally lousy Philadelphia A’s, lets fans manage the team. Veeck gave 1,000 fans signs that said ‘yes’ and ‘no’ on them and, after letting them decide the starting lineup, let them run the game. They stuck with starting pitcher Ned Garver, who gave up three runs in the third, and he rewarded them with a complete game, won by the Browns 5-3.

In 1968 – The Rascals are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second of five consecutive weeks with People Got to Be Free. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #14 on Billboard’s soul chart and was Billboard’s fifth-biggest song of the year. It was the third and final #1 song for the group, who had also hit the top with Good Lovin’ (1966) and Groovin’  (1967), both as the Young Rascals.

Leading Off

CRYSTAL BALL ME: We are not the greatest prognosticators here at your Daily Dose, but one thing we said during the run-up to the GOP nominating Donald Trump for president has proven true:

His only real talent is drawing attention to himself.

He does this supremely well, too. It’s why he ran for president: so people would notice him. We don’t think he really cared about being president; if being a ball boy for the New York Knicks afforded him the attention he craves, he would have be a ball boy for the New York Knicks.

This Just In: The latest example of this is the recent imbroglio with Denmark, which Trump has done a brilliant job of escalating far beyond what any of us could have reasonably expected. Not only has it resulted in the nonsense we’ve come to expect from the Trump Administration, but the Danes response threw Trump into such a tizzy he even canceled his plans to go visit them.

Dry, Technical Matter: It was silly and childish to get into a pissing match with Denmark. Certainly, territories and possessions have been sold throughout history, but it was not particularly reasonable to expect Greenland to have been for sale, but what do you expect from a president who believes the moon is part of Mars?

We The People: Every election we get the government we deserve and Trump was a petulant candidate so it is no surprise he is a petulant president.

Stop Us If You’ve Heard This Before: Of course, it didn’t help Trump’s candidacy was fueled in part by a media that failed in its duty to dismiss a billionaire of no substance from the race within days of his declaring and ushered him into the primaries, general election and White House, we elected him because Trump does a good job of allowing everyone – supporters and detractors – to believe what they want.

Strong Finishing Kick: We deserve better than a president who believes Greenland can be bought and that the moon is part of Mars, but we are not going to receive better until we demand it at the ballot box.

The Wife makes the trout Sparrow brought home from the hotel. Today’s Diary.

The side dish was some organic tater tot knockoffs I got at the health food store in town a while back…The box said they’re made of “ancient grains” a term you run into from time to time in the health food racket…They’re cubes and not rounded like classic tater tots and way denser than tater tots and they were pretty good…All in all, it was a very healthy dinner…There is a lot of trout left over, too…I gotta be honest, I am not Mr Trout…I liked it, but I am not reveling in the prospect of more trout…I can make a sandwich out of most anything, tho, and I am thinking of cutting some of it up and mixing it with mayonnaise…Sparrow’s Trout Salad…It would go great between two slices of bread.

In 1970 – What History refers to as the Salad Bowl Strike begins in the Salinas Valley of California. Organized by Cesar Chavez and the United Farm Workers, the strike stemmed from the UFW battle with the Teamsters for control of organizing farmworkers. The strike saw between 5,000-7,000 field workers walk off the job with growers losing approximately $500,000 a day, about $3.2 million in today’s money. The strike was bitter and sometimes violent and wasn’t ended until the UFW and Teamsters signed an agreement the following March. It remains the largest farmworker strike in US history.

In 2008 – South Korea defeats Cuba 3-2 in the gold medal baseball game at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. The Cubans had won three of the past four Olympic baseball tournaments and were heavily favored. For South Korea, Hyun-Jin Ryu, now of the Los Angeles Dodgers, pitched 8 1/3 innings to get the win. It was the first baseball gold medal for South Korea, which had earned the bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney Games. Baseball was later removed as an Olympic sport, though it is scheduled to return next year in Tokyo.

In 1980 – Magic by Olivia Newton-John is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for its fourth and final week. It was Olivia’s 18th Top 40 hit, her fourth #1 and her biggest hit until Physical spent ten weeks at #1 in 1981-82. The song also went to #1 in Canada and was Billboard’s third-biggest song of the year. It was from the soundtrack to the movie Xanadu.

Devani’s rise to world domination begins at the hotel. Today’s Diary.

It’s all but official that Devani is going to be the new assistant front desk manager…She relieved me this morning and we talked about it and while nobody’s said anything official she did say GM Barbara noted that they should “start getting her ready” which seems pretty official to me…I then, rather solemnly, made the sign of the cross with a grace that would have impressed the archbishop of Canterbury, followed by baptismal motions.

In 1953 – One history’s most notorious prisons, Devil’s Island in French Guiana on the northeastern coast of South America, closes for good. The French had stopped sending prisoners there in 1938 and the remaining convicts were allowed to return to France, though some elected to stay behind. Over the years, over 80,000 prisoners served sentences at Devil’s Island, most of which never left. Many died due to the harsh treatment and or diseases caused by limited sanitation and by mosquitos. Devil’s Island had opened in 1852.

In 1851 – The yacht America, representing the New York Yacht Club, wins the first America’s Cup. The competition was held in one day, a race between 15 boats around the Isle of Wight, off the coast of southern England. The race covered 53 nautical miles (a nautical mile is about 2,000 yards) and America won in 10 hours and 34 minutes, 18 minutes ahead of runner-up Aurora. The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron won the last America’s Cup in 2017 in Bermuda and is scheduled to defend it in 2021.

I964 – The Supremes are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with Where Did Our Love Go. It was the first #1 song for the Supremes and the first of five consecutive #1s, a record then held with Elvis Presley, eventually broken by the Beatles (6) and now held by Whitney Houston (7). The Supremes would finish with 12 #1 songs, then a total that trailed only the Beatles and Elvis. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #3 in Great Britain and was Billboard’s tenth biggest song of the year.
