I ate like an oink-oink…Club seats have a private entrance here so the mouth breathers in general admission are kept out…This meant lines were short and didn’t resemble food lines at refugee camps like they did Tuesday in the bleachers…To compensate for Tuesday’s failures – I didn’t eat anything – I had two foot-long bratwursts and an ice cream cone that was so huge climbers could have summited it…Good gravy it was big and, thanks to the falsies, difficult to eat, too…The bratwursts were not Brats of the Year but they were twelve inches long which is good for morale and makes up for minor taste deficiencies.
And The Bottom Ten is back. In case you missed them, or want to relive the magic, here are the Week 1 surveys:
Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…
Wednesday, August 28 Good gravy, today’s training was tedious at times.
First off, the government being the government, everything that can possibly be reduced to letters and acronyms: NOD, DRO, PCP, C-BOTS (I think), RO, CV, DTC, FBI, ABBA, RTD, aichiwawa, WTF, I didn’t know a lot of them and yours truly still doesn’t because while in submarines you’re taught the only dumb question is the one you don’t ask, you can’t really bring everything to all-stop every two minutes so you can be brought up to speed…I was expected to know these.

We went to the ballgame tonight about one-third of us, not too bad a total…Ol’ Sparrow was under the impression the bus was leaving at 1700, so I presented myself at the hotel bar at 1630 for a pregame Scotch and I certainly wasn’t the only one thinking that as a lot of my fellow VSOs had mustered there, requisitioning post-training medicinals.
And hut, hut hike, click here to read The NFL Bottom Ten/Week 1. It’s with my compliments for the next two weeks so go, get addicted now.
9. Cincinnati Bengals (6-10; 10th) – Bengals with a lot to prove with new head coach, though change could be good as usually-lousy Bengals still looking for first B-10 title…70 games under Historical .500 (357-427), Bengals also nine (9) games under Historical .500 for playoffs (5-14)…Opening Loss: at Seattle

Leading Off Leading Off is taking the week off.
Today At The Site The Diary of a Nobody: Sparrow and Cousin Barb hit used bookstores. Today’s Diary.
I was looking for one specific book: Volume 1 of The Story of Civilization series…I’ve read the Reformation and the Caesar to Christ volumes and I wanted to start in at the beginning…I thought I inherited a complete set of the series from Pa Sparrow but I couldn’t find Volume 1 and investigation showed the collection actually had two editions of The Reformation volume…No, I don’t know why, either…The Sparrow’s come from hardy Lutheran stock so maybe it was important to have two volumes concerning Martin Luther around the house.
It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life.

On This Date In 2003 – Mars and Earth are at their closest point in 60,000 years, separated by a mere 34.64 million miles. The last time Mars was closer to Earth was on Sept. 24, 57,617 BC when it was 34.62 million miles away. Mars takes 686 Earth days to go around the sun and the two planets closest approach – known as perihelion – happens every couple of years when Earth passes Mars. The closest the two planets are scheduled to get in the next 500,000 years is 33.32 million miles in September 294,851.
In 1951 – Del Wilber of the Philadelphia Phillies hits three home runs as the Phillies defeat the Cincinnati Reds 3-0 in the second game of a doubleheader. For Wilber, they were fifth, sixth and seventh home runs in an eight-year career that would produce only 19 of them, meaning just under 16 percent of his career home runs were hit in this game. It remains the only time in major league history when a player drove in all his teams runs with home runs in a 3-0 win.
In 1949 – Some Enchanted Evening by Perry Como is at #1 on Billboard’s Best Sellers in Stores chart, a predecessor of the Hot 100 – for its fifth and final week. The song was written by Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein II for their musical South Pacific and the song has charted several times, the last by Jay and the Americans in 1965.

Fresh off their first-ever ESPNCup, symbolic of Bottom Ten supremacy, the worst defense in NCAA history is mostly back, ready to defend its title against what can only be called one of the deepest fields in recent memory.
