The Diary of a Nobody: Sparrow helps maneuver a Greyhound bus into a parking spot and has the latest on the hotel’s coffee pots, and it’s Sunday Night Spaghetti at The Shire. Today’s Diary.
I think the left coffee pot getting emptied before the right one Saturday morning was an aberration…As usual, the right one was emptied first this morning and in a burst of inspiration seldom seen, at least from me, I did two things: one, I transferred the remaining coffee in the right pot to the left pot and then moved the pot on the left to the space on the right!!!…I am not making that up…I figured if I left it there it wouldn’t get used at all and I suspect this policy – which started out as whim – might become permanent…I might even put it on the night audit checklist.

In 1789 – The United States Congress meets for the first time, at Federal Hall in New York City. 14 representatives from five states and eight senators from five states assembled, but since neither chamber had enough for a quorum, no business was transacted. Both would achieve a quorum in April and would pass their first bill on May 5 when the Senate passed a measure concerning the administration of oaths of office the House had passed earlier.
In 1930 – Emma Fahning becomes the first woman to bowl a perfect 300 game in sanctioned competition. Competing for the Germain Cleaning Team at a tournament in Buffalo, Fahning was reportedly unimpressed by her feat because she was rather new to the game. Though changes in bowling balls and lanes have made 300 games more common, at the time it was a rather rare achievement.
In 1967 – The Rolling Stones are at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with Ruby Tuesday. The song would spend one week at the top, the fourth of eight #1 songs for the Rolling Stones. Ruby Tuesday was originally released as the B side to Let’s Spend the Night Together, then a rather controversial song that only peaked at #55 in the US.

The Diary of a Nobody: Sparrow manages to fix the bathroom light. Today’s Diary.
I am, tho, pleased to report the bathroom light is fixed…Sheer exhaustion did not stop me from putting the new $16-lasts-forever lightbulb in and I am pleased to report it no longer flickers, it stays on all the time, just like its supposed to…Since I have trouble cleaning the stove and starting the snow blower, The Wife congratulated me as if I’d just made the medal stand at the Special Olympics.

The Diary of a Nobody: Sparrow blows $6.50 for a bar of soap and it’s a busy shift at the retailer. Today’s Diary.
I reported to the service desk after lunch, completely missing the rush to cash checks and fund Mexico and Central America and I noticed those peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in the freezer case across from the service desk have been big movers…In fact, I sold several of them today and the freezer case is almost out…Strawberry is way more popular than grape – an upset, if you ask me – as there was only one strawberry in the freezer and almost a dozen boxes of grapes.

In 1692 – What would become the Salem (Massachusetts) Witch Trials begins when three women -Sarah Good, Sarah Osborne and a slave known only as Tituba – are brought before two local magistrates. History records that Tituba actually confessed, implicating Good and Osborne. All three would be tried and convicted of witchcraft. Good would be hanged in July, Osborne would die in jail in May and Tituba was ultimately released, sold to an anonymous buyer for the price of her jail fees.
In 1988 – Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers has one goal and one assist as the Oilers defeat the Los Angeles Kings 5-3. The assist is Gretzky’s 1,050th of his career, breaking the all-time record that had been held by Gordie Howe. Gretzky would retire 1,963 assists, an NHL record that still stands. Howe’s mark of 1,049 assists is now good for 10th on the all-time list.
In 1975 – The Eagles are at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the only week with Best of My Love. Though initially hesitant to release it as a single, the song became the first of five #1 songs for the Eagles and also went to #1 in Canada. Best of My Love was the seventh of a Hot 100 of record twelve consecutive #1 songs that would spend only one week at #1.

The Diary of a Nobody: It’s a slow, pleasant night at the hotel and Sparrow reveals he does not have a go-to dance step. Today’s Diary.
…There were idiots from stores all over the state and they started the day with the cheer and then we are all supposed to introduce ourselves with our name, town and go-to dance step…You’ve got to be kidding me…I don’t have a go-to dance step…Hell, I don’t have any kind of dance step, go-to or otherwise…I forget how I got out of this, tho…I think I may have gone to use the can.

In 1993 – Agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms raid the compound of the Branch Davidian church in Waco, Texas. They were attempting to serve an arrest warrant on leader David Koresh, who was suspected of stockpiling weapons. They didn’t succeed. A gun battle ensued and that was followed by a 51-day standoff. The siege would end on April 19th in a government raid that killed 76 Branch Davidians.
In 1967 – Wilt Chamberlain of the Philadelphia 76ers makes the last of an NBA record 35 consecutive field goals in a 127-107 win over the Cincinnati Royals – now the Sacramento Kings – in Syracuse, New York. Chamberlain had last missed a field goal in a February 17th game against Cincinnati. The record still stands.
In 1981 – Eddie Rabbitt is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with I Love a Rainy Night. It was Rabbitt’s fourth of eight Top 40 hits and his only #1. Earlier, the song had spent a week at #1 on Billboard’s country chart, Rabbit’s eighth of 17 #1 hits on that chart. Rabbitt died of cancer in 1998, a death that was kept secret until his burial and that surprised even his agent, who had no idea Rabbitt was sick.
