The problem is I don’t know which direction the ironing board should face…Does the pointy end go on my right or left…I experimented and both ways resulted in an almost ruined shirt…

In 1959 – The Barbie doll debuts, designed by Ruth Handler, wife of Elliot, a co-founder of Mattel. Ms. Handler was inspired by her daughter Barbara playing with paper dolls and initially her husband, and others at Mattel were uninterested. 60 years to the day later, over a billion Barbies have been sold worldwide. The first Barbie doll wore a black and white striped swimsuit and came as both a blonde and brunette.
In 1859 – The National Association of Base Ball Players, not to be confused with the National Association that fielded teams from 1871-75, issues the first restrictions on the bat, specifying a maximum diameter of 2-1/2 inches. This would be increased to the current 2-3/4 inches in 1895 when the maximum length was set at 42 inches, specifications still in use today.
In 1974 – Terry Jacks is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second of three consecutive weeks with Seasons in the Sun. The song went to #1 in twelve other countries, including Great Britain and Jacks’ native Canada and was Billboard’s second biggest song of 1974. Jacks had originally produced a version of the song by the Beach Boys and only recorded it after the Beach Boys declined to release their version. Though Jacks had other Top 40 hits in Canada and Great Britain, he remains a true one-hit wonder in the US, one of the few acts whose only Top 40 hit went to #1.

The Diary of a Nobody: Sparrow has a leisurely day to himself, so he goes out to breakfast and has the latest on last week’s repair he made to the light switch. Today’s Diary.
I am pleased – not to mention somewhat surprised – to report my light repair in the bathroom is still holding out…Recall the light had been going on and off and the switch was loose, so I replaced the switch which solved nothing, so I got a new light bulb, which did…The only flaw is it takes a split second for the light to come on after you throw the switch, but I am hardly a Master Electrician so we can live with that…

After a couple of years with The Firm I started branching out. Again with the need for something more interesting because Lord knows collecting ransoms wasn’t exciting enough. A comrade said people like us needed to be where the smoke was and if there wasn’t any smoke we were willing to create it just to make life interesting for ourselves and others, too.

In 2014 – Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, flying from Malaysia to Hong Kong disappears over the Southern Indian Ocean. Very little is known about what happened. The plane disappeared about an hour into the flight and no distress call was made. A three-year search turned up nothing and no theory about how it disappeared has received wide acceptance. Some wreckage as turned up and it is presumed all 239 passengers and crew died.
In 1954 – The Milwaukee Hawks defeat the Baltimore Bullets 65-54 and 64-54, the only time in NBA history two teams have played each other twice on the same day. The game was played in Milwaukee and the following night the Hawks would play in Indianapolis and the night after that in Omaha and remain the only NBA team to play four games in three nights.
In 1969 – Everyday People by Sly and the Family Stone is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the fourth and final week. The song was the group’s first of three #1s on the Hot 100 and was Billboard’s 5th biggest hit of 1969. Earlier, Everyday People had spent two weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart, the first of three #1s there.

The Diary of a Nobody: Sparrow has the latest from the hotel, including filling a hot water bottle for a guest, and he is so well-known at the Mexican joint in the next county he doesn’t even have to give his order to the kid working the counter, the cook does it for him.
About midnight two British women come to the front desk, one of whom is carrying a hot water bottle…Apparently, she is sore from her day’s skiing adventure…She asks if we have “some boiling water handy” and her friend even specifies a kettle of all things, making it sound like hoteliers the world over keep kettles of boiling water at the ready as a matter of course…As it was, I was useful here, because the commercial coffee maker in the coffee room has a hot water spout and I announced I could comply with her request…

In 1986 – The crew cabin of the space shuttle Challenger is discovered by the USS Preserver in 100 feet of water off the coast of Florida. Thought the cabin was severely crushed and fragmented the remains of all seven astronauts were recovered. Challenger had exploded 73 seconds after liftoff on January 28 and autopsies were unable to determine the cause of death of Challenger’s crew.
In 1939 – The Boston Bruins are awarded the Prince of Wales Trophy for having the NHL’s best regular season record, the first time the trophy had been so awarded. For the previous twelve seasons it had been issued to the NHL’s American Division champion and was first issued in 1925 to the Montreal Canadiens for winning the first game in Madison Square Garden. A versatile award, the Prince of Wales trophy is now awarded to the winner of the Eastern Conference Final playoff series.
In 1953 – Hank Williams is at #1 on all three of Billboard’s country charts – Most Played in Juke Boxes, National Best Sellers and Most Played by Jockeys – with Kaw-Liga. The song would spend a combined 29 weeks at #1 on the three surveys between February 21 through May 16. It was the ninth of eleven #1s on the country chart for Williams and the first since his death in January. His son Hank Williamns, Jr. took Kaw-Liga to #12 on the country chart in 1980.

The Diary of a Nobody: Sparrow gives a clinic to a British subject in being polite, and it’s the latest from the coffee pot front lines. Today’s Diary.
The right coffee pot was completely dominant this morning, getting virtually all of the action and I took so much pity on the left pot that I moved to the right side…There wasn’t even enuff left in the right pot to transfer to the left one.

In 1665 – The first edition of the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society is published. Originally a private publication, it became the Society’s official publication in 1752. (Philosophical in this instance refers to what was then called natural philosophy, now known as science.) Over the centuries, the journal has featured some of our great thinkers including, among others, Issac Newton, Benjamin Franklin, and Stephen Hawking and it is the oldest scientific journal in the world.
In 1982 – The San Antonio Spurs defeat the Milwaukee Bucks 171-166 in three overtimes, the 337 total points establishing a new NBA record for Most Points in a Game, Both Teams. The Spurs and the Bucks broke the old record of 316 which had been done twice: on March 2, 1962 (Philadelphia Warriors over the New York Knicks 169-147; Wilt Chamberlian’s 100 point game) and again on March 12, 1970 (Cincinnati Royals over the San Diego Rockets 165-151). The record is now held by the Detroit Pistons (186) and the Denver Nuggets (184), who combined for 370 in three overtimes on December 13, 1983.
In 1971 – The Temptations are at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Best Selling Soul Singles chart – for the first of three weeks with Just My Imagination (Running Away With Me). The song was the eleventh of 15 soul chart #1s for the Temptations and Just My Imagination would later spend two weeks at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100.

The Diary of a Nobody: Sparrow has the latest news from the hotel’s coffee pots and he can’t remember of this kid is someone’s boyfriend or son. Today’s Diary.
This morning yes, the right coffee pot got the most use, but the left one wasn’t completely ignored, either, getting modest action…I replaced both of them with full pots, took both to the back coffee room and put what was left of the right pot into what had been the left the pot and put that back in rotation…I don’t know if the Health Department would give the all-clear on the Sparrow Coffee Transfer but I don’t really care…They are not here to stop me.
