We’ve always thought the key to recognizing fake news was to trust your instincts. If something doesn’t seem quite right, just like if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
So when we heard in the Internets that Aretha Franklin had her wardrobe changed four times during her funeral last week, we found ourselves scratching our heads because this seemed a bit much, even for Ms Franklin’s eight-and-a-half-hour funeral and we were curious enough to do some research and it turned out this story was false. For her funeral, Ms Franklin wore a gold dress, which she was later sent to her grave in.
The tale wasn’t completely inaccurate, though, as during the four days her body was made available for public viewing Ms Franklin wore four different outfits.
The moral of the story: well, one, we will write about anything when we can’t think of anything else and, two, trust your instincts regarding what you see and hear. If something leaves you scratching your head, don’t be afraid to do some research and know for sure.

Rajib is back in Sparrow’s life on today’s edition of The Diary of a Nobody, back this time as temporary GM at Hotel B…Of course, he is late for work, just like he was during his reign as temporary GM at Hotel A. Also, The Wife is off again, this time for a week to go see her kids.
The Count of Mirabeau, a rather prominent figure in the French Revolution, has The Thought for the Day, a quote about not too much getting in the way of a firm resolve.
And hut, hut hike, it’s Bottom Ten time, as The Bottom Ten/NCAA Week 2 survey moves, with a very special appearance by a once-proud national power. It is, as usual, the funniest Bottom Ten on the planet.
On This Date
In 1972 – The Price is Right, a game show where contestants try to guess the price of items so they can win fabulous prizes, debuts on CBS Television. It is still on the air, the longest-running game show in the history of American TV and its 47the season will begin later this month.
In 1972 – American Mark Spitz becomes the first person to win seven gold medals a single Olympiad. Spitz, teaming with Mike Stamm, Tom Bruce and Jerry Heidenreich, win the 4×100 medley in a world record time 3:48.16.
1971 – Paul and Linda McCartney are at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey. It would spend one week at #1 and while far from McCartney’s biggest hit, it was his first post-Beatles #1 song as a writer and his first gold record as a solo act. The song, which sometimes appears to make little sense, is a compilation of assorted song fragments McCartney had lying around.

27 songs hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1966. Four of those songs fell out of the top spot and later returned to #1.

The Count of Mirabeau
The Honored Gabriel Riqueti, count of Mirabeau (1749-91) was a French statesman of significant renown both before the French Revolution and during, where he served as president of the National Assembly until his death of natural causes. The count got around and had numerous affairs and even his own sentence of death as well as other adventures, all of which led to scorn from the nobles and affection from the people. Completely at home in all elements of scandal, Mirabeau kept everyone on their toes and History still is not entirely certain if he was a great statesman, a demagogue who catered to the lowest common denominator or a traitor. Us humans being as we are, he may well have been all three. Today’s Thought was found in Walden, by Henry David Thoreau.

The Rev. Jasper Williams, one of the eulogists at Aretha Franklin’s funeral, is in hot water, with the Internets getting its collective shorts in a knot over parts if his fiery, 50-minute eulogy. And, frankly, he is due for some derision because he was delivering a eulogy, not a policy speech, but no matter, a preacher will take his pulpit where he finds it.
Among his transgressions was saying black America had “lost its soul” and that “black lives don’t matter”. He even referred to black children growing up without fathers to be “abortion after birth”
Let me answer like this: No. Black lives do not matter, black lives will not matter, black lives ought not matter, black lives should not matter, black lives must not matter until black people start respecting black lives and stop killing ourselves, black lives can never matter.
Rev. Williams is right. Until black people start respecting black lives, and until whites start respecting lives other than their own, black lives won’t matter and America won’t matter. Part of this, of course, is America’s fault. Blacks still don’t get a square deal here, having to work twice has hard for gains whites accept as a matter of course. But Rev Williams point about black on black violence has merit, too.
Friends, we rise as a society and we fall as a society and as long as blacks are obliged to wonder if their lives matter they will continue to be second-class citizens and America will be a second rate country.

The Diary of a Nobody: Sparrow has a couple of snotty walk-ins at the hotel and it is his pleasure to tell them he does not have a vacancy. On This Date
In 1838 – Abolitionist Frederick Douglass escapes from slavery. Using papers provided by a free black seaman, and a sailor’s uniform provided by his future wife, who was free. Douglass, who was escaping from a Maryland plantation, took a train and a boat to eventually make it to New York City. After marrying his fiance, they settled in Massachusetts.
In 1985 – Reggie Jackson of the California Angels hits two home runs in a 14-8 loss to the Detroit Tigers, making Jackson the first major league player to hit at least 100 home runs with three different teams. He also did it with the Oakland A’s and the New York Yankees.
In 1966 – Sunshine Superman by Donovan is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song would spend one week at #1 and was Donovan’s only #1 hit, though the follow-up, Mellow Yellow, went to #2. Future members of Led Zeppelin Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones also played on the song.

He is considered by those smarter than us to be a foremost authority on the founding of the American republic and his book Adams vs. Jefferson: The Tumultuous Election of 1800 is also very good. Today’s Thought was written about John Adams, one of the leading figures of the American Revolution.

You know, the only lesson we need about President Trump was found in the whole recent imbroglio that followed the death of Senator John McCain. His refusal to act like a president and honor a man deserving of presidential accolades was a national embarrassment.
Trump, of course, came off as petty, vindictive and childish. Now, this was hardly a bulletin because we’ve known these things about him since before we elected him president, but it was nice to see these traits coalesced into one convenient, easy to refer to package.
It’s hard to say the damage that will be instilled in the presidency by Trump. His total disregard for protocol, indeed his utter disregard for anything other than his own infantile feelings, could set a precedent followed by future presidents, or, hopefully, future presidents will dismiss the precedents he both broke and set.

Sparrow accepts a cash payment at the hotel, and uses the new hamper The Wife bought him on today’s edition of The Diary of a Nobody. Also, it was a historic week in the Sleep Log, as Sparrow gets 50 hours of sleep in a week for just the third time this summer.
Winston Churchill has The Thought for the Day, talking about something he is supremely qualified to talk about, loving oneself.
On This Date
In 31 BCE – Forces under Octavian defeat forces led by Mark Antony and Cleopatra in the Battle of Actium on the Ionian Sea off the western coast of Greece. It is the decisive battle in the Final War of the Roman Republic. With the win, Octavian consolidated power in the Roman Empire and would later be its first emperor. With the loss, Mark Antony and Cleopatra were obliged to flee to Egypt, where they committed suicide the following year.
In 1909 – Bill O’Hara of the New York Giants becomes the second pinch-runner in major league (ML) history to steal two bases in one inning. The day before he had become the first. This is a rather curious record that is listed in old Sporting News ML record books, but not the one issued by the Elias Sports Bureau. We have significant experience in researching the ML record book, and this is the only instance we could find of a player establishing a new ML record one day and tying it the next.
In 1967 – Bobbie Gentry is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second of four weeks with Ode to Billy Joe. It would be Gentry’s only #1 hit and one of her three Top 40 hits. The song also went to #1 in Canada and earned Gentry two Grammy Awards, for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. Ode to Billy Joe originally had eleven verses and lasted over seven minutes but was cut when the decision was made to release it as a single.

Winston Churchill (1874-1965) was, among many things, a British politician, writer and soldier. He served two terms as prime minister of the United Kingdom, including providing the leadership and inspiration that were key to leading the Allies to victory in World War II. As they should, the years have been kind to Churchill, and he remains one of History’s towering figures, one of the relative few of us who will be talked about as long as there are humans around to talk.
