The Diary of a Nobody/Saturday, September 1

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, September 1
I don’t see how Puja does this, working the front desk for 16 hours, then trying to sleep on overnights…My own fraught-with-peril attempts to get naps in at Hotel B recently showed this, and this morning illustrated that she would have had a tough time getting more than a couple of hours in at any one time…And 7am is merely the traditional start of morning shift at hotels….She actually has to start preparing for breakfast at 0600.

In 1897 – North America’s first subway tunnel, the Tremont Street Subway opens in Boston. Originally built as a way to get ground level streetcars from clogging up the roads, it eventually became a transit line and is still in use, part of the Boston subway’s Green Line.

In 1909 – Bill O’Hara of the New York Giants establishes one of the major league record book’s more curious records, becoming the first pinch-runner to steal two bases in one inning. Running for pitcher Bugs Raymond in the sixth inning, O’Hara stole second and third base and later scored as Giants got three runs to extend their lead to 9-3. The Cardinals would get three late runs, but the Giants held on to win 9-6. The record has been tied many times.

In 2018 – Meant To Be by Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia Line top the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for the 39th consecutive week. It debuted at #1 on December 16, 2017 and is now the biggest country song of all-time, spending more weeks at #1 than any song not only on the country chart, but more weeks at #1 ever on any Billboard singles chart. It peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Answer To The Last Trivia Question
A Boy Named Sue was Johnny Cash’s biggest song on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #2 in 1969.

Since February 25, 2017, only five songs have hit #1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart. Name them. – Answer next time!

The Thought for the Day/Charles Kuralt

But his time is not now, and so the legend dies.
Charles Kuralt

Charles Kuralt (1934-97) was an American journalist, known primarily for his work with CBS Television. A friendly, folksy sort, Kuralt made his biggest splash when he got out of the hard news racket he never really liked and started hosting On the Road With Charles Kuralt. Later he anchored CBS News Sunday Morning. Today’s Thought, however, comes from an old CBS Radio feature called News Notes and Comment. It was hosted by a variety of CBS radio and TV personalities, and we heard it daily when we were an announcer at a small CBS affiliate in the southern California desert. It is one of the earliest quotes in our quotebook, though unfortunately, we neglected to note whom Kuralt was referring to, though Paul Bunyan keeps popping into our mind.

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

We’ve had some rain lately, so today was the first watering I’d done in the garden in a while…Parts of the gardens are starting to call it a season and the lawn doesn’t grow as fast which is good because my interest in mowing it is waning.

In The News
The NCAA has cleared Michigan State University of any NCAA rules violations in connection with the sexual abuse committed by former employee Dr Larry Nasser, and in connection with how it responded to similar allegations against some of its athletes.

This is both believable and unbelievable, which may seem wishy-washy, but we’re dealing with the NCAA, the biggest combination of pimp, whore and john in the country.

It’s believable, somewhat, because the NCAA isn’t the FBI. They sanction collegiate sports and the violations they are generally concerned with are competitive in nature.

It is unbelievable because Nassar is spending the rest of his life prison for abusing Michigan State athletes! There has to be some rule in some NCAA manual somewhere that at least frowns on this. And if there isn’t, if keeping a sex abuser on staff and then ignoring pleas of sexual abuse does not violate your rules, maybe you need some new rules.

Chef Sparrow makes hotcakes on today’s edition of The Diary of a Nobody. Plus Sparrow and The Wife risk annoying the incumbent sheriff by putting signs up for his opponent in their yard. And there is a 13.5-hour entry in the latest Sleep Log.

Mable Newcomer, an American economist, has The Thought for the Day, a quote about knowing where we are going and not mistaking activity for achievement.

On This Date
In 1888 – The first confirmed victim of the infamous British serial killer Jack the Ripper is murdered. Her name was Mary Ann Nichols and she was murdered about 3am while plying her trade as a prostitute, trying to earn her night’s lodgings. At least five murders are attributed to Jack, all involving slashed throats and mutilated abdomens. The name Jack the Ripper came from a letter to police from someone claiming to be the murderer, a letter that is believed to be a hoax. The murderer’s identity remains unknown.

In 1894 – Billy Hamilton of the Philadelphia Phillies becomes the first major leaguer to steal seven bases in a game in an 11-5 victory over the Washington Nationals in the second game of a doubleheader. An earlier instance of this feat, in 1881 by George Gore of Chicago, came before stolen bases were officially recorded. The record still stands.

In 1963 – Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart for the sixth of seven consecutive weeks. Cash’s future wife June Carter is given credit as co-writer, but Cash’s first wife insists Cash wrote the song and gave her credit because Carter needed the money. It was Cash’s sixth of 13 #1 songs on the country chart and went to #17 on Billboard’s Hot 100.

Answer To The Last Trivia Question
The major league record for most home runs in a game by one team is 10, by the Toronto Blue Jays on September 14, 1987.

The Thought for the Day/Mabel Newcomer

It is more important to know where you are going than to get there quickly. Do not mistake activity for achievement.
Mabel Newcomer

Mabel Newcomer (1892-1983) was an American economist and professor, primarily at Vassar College, of considerable note, specializing in public finance and taxes. She was a delegate to the Bretton Woods Conference, a UN gathering to discuss the post-World War II financial order that produced, among other things, the International Monetary Fund. Newcomer was the only American woman and academic delegate to the convention. Regular readers of this feature may be scratching their heads thinking this looks familiar, as it should because this quote has appeared in this feature before. The commentary, of course, is fresh.

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Thursday, August 30
Made some hotcakes today…Now, regular readers of this crap know that is more cooking than I like to do, and will not be surprised to learn most of the work was done for me…The Wife was off working off her membership at the gym in town when I woke up but she had everything ready…The batter was made, butter and syrup were out and the griddle was set up, too…All that was required was for ol’ Sparrow to turn the griddle on and wait for it to heat up and hell, even I can do that.

In The News
They’re off and running Florida where the race between a black Democrat Andrew Gillum and a white, President Trump-back Republican Ron DeSantis has already seen both sides issue the first racial invective.

Gillum said voters aren’t looking for misogynists, racists or bigots while DeSantis was clutch, saying voters shouldn’t “monkey this up” be electing a black. The only real question is if the n-word will be used in an official capacity.

More so than other gubernatorial race, Florida’s race will serve a nice referendum on the Trump Administration.

Sparrow has a couple of walk-ins, rare for the graveyard shift, at the hotel plus the front desk printers still aren’t working, so he prints off some of the morning paperwork in the business center. Plus he gets a rare nap in, all on today’s edition of The Diary of a Nobody.

The Thought for the Day returns, and today’s quote is by Margaret Thatcher who talks about government and how it is unable to solve all of society’s problems.

On This Date
In 1963 – The hotline between Washington, DC and the Soviet Union goes into operation. Despite what is commonly thought, the system has never utilized a telephone. Initially, communication was by telegraph with a radio backup and went satellite in 1971, fax in 1983 and now uses instant messaging and email. The system is tested hourly with non-official communications, though today will include anniversary greetings as well as good wishes for the coming year on New Year’s Eve.

In 1953 – The Pittsburgh Pirates and the Milwaukee Braves split a doubleheader, 19-4 and 11-5. The Pirates hit a then-major league (ML) record eight home runs in winning the opener, while the Braves hit four home runs while winning game two. The twelve combined home runs establish a National Leage record for home runs in a doubleheader that still stands.

In 1980 – Christopher Cross is at #1 for the first time when Sailing ascends the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Sailing would spend one week at #1n and also hit #1 in Canada though it didn’t even hit the Top 40 in Great Britain, peaking at #48. Cross would also hit #1 the following year with Arthur’s Theme (The Best That You Can Do).

Answer To The Last Trivia Question
Martin Luther King, Jr used the phrase “I have a dream” eight times in his I Have a Dream speech.

Today’s Stumper
What is the current ML record for most home runs in a game by one team? – Answer next time!

The Thought for the Day/Margaret Thatcher

I think we’ve been through a period where too many people have been given to understand that if they have a problem, it’s the government’s job to cope with it. ‘I have a problem, I’ll get a grant.’ ‘I’m homeless, the government must house me.’ They’re casting their problem on society. And, you know, there is no such thing as society. There are individual men and women, and there are families. And no government can do anything except through people, and people must look to themselves first.
Margaret Thatcher

The Diary of a Nobody/Wednesday, August 29

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Wednesday, August 29
Had two walk-ins at Hotel B this morning, which is two more than I usually get in a month…The first came about 0100…He was a tall guy and he said he and his family were camping, tho his kid was teething and demanding a change of scenery…I was able to rustle up one those Pack-N-Play deals, which are sort of a combination of crib and playpen, which he was extremely grateful for.
