Capsule Book Review: Or Perish In The Attempt: Wilderness Medicine in the Lewis and Clark Expedition By Dr David Peck: Regular readers of this crap will recall we recently reviewed the fine book Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson and the Opening of the American West by Stephen Ambrose. By chance, Or Perish in the Attempt was lying around the house, too, and we eagerly dove into it.

These two books represent our first extensive reading on the Corps of Discovery. In fact, our ignorance of the Lewis and Clark was such we didn’t even know they were known as the Corps of Discovery until recently.

If you aren’t very familiar with Lewis and Clark, and you have even a passing interest in history, go, become familiar with it. Along with Apollo 11, it might well be the greatest adventure any American has embarked on.

Each book covers the same ground, but each from a different aspect. Undaunted Courage is more or less a biography of Lewis and his relationship with Jefferson.  Or Perish in the Attempt looks at the Expedition from a medical perspective. Peck, a practicing physician and a Lewis and Clark fan, is well-suited for the work.

Dry, Technical Matter: There wasn’t much for either Lewis and Clark, the Corps medical officers, to go on. Both were, or had been, Army officers so they had had some in-the-field training, and both were veterans of getting on in the wilderness, so they knew how to set broken bones and whatnot, and Lewis spent some quality time with America’s foremost physician, Dr Benjamin Rush, before the expedition. but neither Lewis nor Clark really knew squat about how the human body operates when they pulled out of St Louis for the Pacific Ocean on May 14, 1803.

As Peck brilliantly put it, Lewis and Clark had some rather useless medicines, some half-baked theories and large amounts of good common sense, the latter ending up being their most useful tool. Throughout the expedition, they had to deal with broken bones, snake bites, separated joints, colds, flu, frostbite stomach pains, the clap – the Indians first export to America – and everything else you would expect three dozen men, a woman, a baby and a dog left to fend for themselves in the wilderness to suffer.

Can We Put This In Gaylon Terms?: Peck knows not everyone in his audience is a doctor, too, so he puts every ailment and attempted cure in layman’s terms, without talking down to halfwits like us. He discusses why a Dr Lewis or Dr Clark cure did or did not work, and what current treatments might be, When the expedition’s journals weren’t clear on what the ailment was, Peck does a good job offering possibilities.

Oh Yeah: Peck ends his book by detailing the history of medicine up till 1803, showing the foundation Lewis and Clark had to work from.

LOL: What’s funny was that despite the deprivation and dangers, and despite having zero knowledge of bacteria, viruses or even how their internal organs worked and not really knowing what they were doing, only one person died, one Sgt Floyd, early in the expedition, of appendicitis.

The Bottom Line: One hell of a book, highly recommended for everyone from casual fans history to Lewis and Clark aficionados. The deprivation and they endured and they daily labors involved in their mission are something most of us can’t relate to and I was left with the impression that unless the Corps of Discovery was in vital need of a lazy, whining writer, we probably would’ve been summarily executed on Day 2.

“…THAT THE SAID DEFINITIVE TREATY BE, AND THE SAME IS HEREBY RATIFIED BY THE UNITED STATES IN CONGRESS ASSEMBLED…”: The Revolutionary War comes a step closer to officially ending on this date in 1784 when the Confederation Congress ratifies the Treaty of Paris, which the United States and Great Britain had signed in September 1983.

FunFact: Great Britain would ratify the treaty in April, and copies of the ratified treaties would be exchanged in May. The war would not eventually end until later in May when Britain officially ended hostilities with, of all people, the Dutch, who had been dragged into the war because of their support of the French and the Americans.

Up…Up…And Away: President Franklin Roosevelt becomes the first president to travel by airplane on this date in 1943, flying from Miami to Morocco to meet with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

Today In Today Show History: The Today show debuts on this date in 1952, with Dave Garroway as hosts. It is still on the air, and at 64-years is the fifth longest TV show in American history.

Thought For The Day: When science clearly contradicts Buddhist beliefs, and it is proven, then we must reject the earlier beliefs. We will accept the evidence of science…The Buddha himself made it clear that the final decision for every person must come through investigation, not by relying solely on religious texts. The Buddha gave us each that freedom. – The Fourteenth Dalai Lama

The only nation to put men on the moon is collapsing…

America’s Funniest Guy

GOOD NEWS/BAD NEWS: The good news is the government changes hands in a bit over a week. This is good because for our money we are wrapping up 16 consecutive years of the worst presidential leadership this nation has ever been obliged to absorb.

Uh-Oh: The bad news is Donald Trump is taking office.

Dry, Technical Matter: President-elect Trump was a misfit as a private citizen and an embarrassment as a candidate and it is reasonable to expect him to be an embarrassment as president because the best indicator of future performance is past performance.

The Bottom Line: If we are expecting substantive change to how our nation is governed we are deluding ourselves. We are holding out modest hope that a businessman as president might produce an economy anchored in low taxes, free markets and minimal regulation, but we aren’t holding our breath.

Bad News…More Bad News: The short-term prognosis for our country is bleak: more war, more debt and more mass shootings because America’s citizens now are as violent as their government.

USA! USA! The long-term prognosis is equally appealing: America will collapse before this half-century is out.

Consider This: Anybody who thinks we can continue perpetual war and mindless fiscal irresponsibility with impunity is deluding themselves. We can’t. It will, eventually, mean the end of our country.

Good News/Bad News II: The good news is us American’s are never farther away from good government than the next election.

The bad news is we continually take fliers on this, insisting on reelecting the people who got us into this mess in the first place. The blame for our second-rate country can be found by all us – you, me, our aunt in Leadville – looking in the mirror every morning.

The Decline And Fall…: Because like Rome, our decline lies in our people, you and me, collectively, expecting nothing better out of our government or, frankly, ourselves. If an America at peace, with an economy anchored in low taxes and free markets and minimal regulation does not present itself in fairly short order, the Great American Experiment will collapse, probably before this half-century is out, tossed aside the scrap heap of history like the Roman Empire and the Soviet Union.

YOU’RE IN GOOD HANDS…: Life insurance appears in the United States for the first time on this date in 1759 when a group of Presbyterian churches in Philadelphia charters a life insurance company. The corporation, ultimately known as the Presbyterian Ministers Fund, was acquired by Provident Mutual Life Insurance in the 1990’s, which was bought out by Nationwide Mutual Insurance around the turn of the century.

Great Moments In The Death Penalty: Illinois Governor George Ryan commutes the death sentences of Illinois prisoners to life imprisonment on this date in 2003. In 2000 Ryan had placed a moratorium on executions in Illinois. All of this was based on investigations into the conduct of Chicago police detective Jon Burge, who had forced confessions from suspects from 1972-91.

Dry, Technical Matter: Burge was ultimately convicted of assorted charges in 2010, was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison and was released in October, 2014.

Thought For The Day: A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself within. The essential causes of Romes decline lay in her people, her morals, her class struggle, her failing trade, her bureaucratic despotism, her stifling taxes, her consuming wars.– Will Durant, Caesar and Christ, The Story of Civilization, Volume III

Answer To The Last Trivia Question: There was not a Trivia feature last time.

The Diary of a Nobody 1/9/17 – Drivel From Sparrow!

Friend America’s Funniest Guy on Facebook!

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Monday, January 9
Had to have set some sort of record at the very start of my shift at the retailer today: my first two sales were paid for with $50 bills and neither required a bag!!!

I am not making that up.

Right off the bat this lady comes up and buys two candy bars…No bag required for that as she just threw them in her purse and I suspect – and my instincts are pretty trusty – that she merely wanted to break the fifty…Right after that, a guy came by with cart that had one of those really big bags of dog food in them, the kind that take up most of the cart and probably last for a year…He, too paid with a fifty and, of course, used the cart for easy transport to his car.

Now, those zany Hindus have some saying about how everything has happened and everything will happen, but it’s hard to believe these circumstances had ever presented themselves before: consecutive purchases with $50 tendered and no bag required…A short time later, another fifty was offered, but the guy needed bags for his stuff.

Funny lines from today:

This lady comes thru and she’s buying lots of school supplies: binders, paper and whatnot and she muttered – in a manner indicating she was not completely thrilled with this – something about how specific her daughter’s needs were for high school…Immediately following the school supplies were a couple of boxes of cornbread mix…I picked one up and tapped it:

Is this for school, too???
No…It’s for dinner…Chili tonight!!!

Later, a young couple came thru buying some ear plugs…Call it the instinct all the great ones have, but I suspected they were being purchased to help the guy sleep…I made some innocuous comment about how the brand he bought had the highest noise rating and he indicated they were for him because his girlfriend snored…I nodded knowingly:

I hear you…Ear plugs are the only reason my wife and I are able to sleep in the same county…

Bought some more ginger tea today…Recall I had bought some yesterday, but the one I thought was repackaged version of my fave brand was not…It tasted more like regular tea with some ginger thrown in, so I went to the local health food store – well, one of 39 health food stores in town – and they had what I was looking for and I bought three boxes, two for the resort and one for home.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
