In 1945 – The Battle of Iwo Jima comes to an end with American forces taking the island from the Japanese. The battle had begun on February 19 and resulted in over 6,000 US deaths and over 22,000 Japanese deaths and produced 27 Medal of Honor recipients, 14 of which were awarded posthumously. The famous photograph of Marines raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi was taken on Feb 23. 

In 1915 – The Vancouver Millionaires of the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA) win the Stanley Cup with a 12-3 win over the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey Association (NHA) in Game 3, sweeping their best-of-five series. It was the first Stanley Cup win by a team from the West Coast and remains the only Stanley Cup win for a team from Vancouver.

In 1994 – Ace of Base is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the third of six non-consecutive weeks with The Sign. It was the second of seven Top 40 hits for the group, their second of four Top 10s, and remains their only #1 song. The song also went to #1 in seven other countries, including Zimbabwe and Denmark, peaked at #2 in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s #1 song of the year and their 11th-biggest of the decade.

In 1807 – The world’s first passenger rail service begins, with the Swansea and Mumbles Railway providing service from Swansea and Oystermouth in southern Wales, Great Britain. Rail service in those days was horse-powered, and the train converted to steam power in 1877 and eclectic power in 1928 before closing in 1960 in favour of bus service. 

In 1934 – Horton Smith of the US wins the first Masters golf tournament with a final round 72 to beat fellow American Craig Wood by one stroke at Augusta National Golf Club. It was the first of two Masters wins for Smith and remain his only major victories. The tournament was founded by Bobby Jones, who built Augusta National so he and his friends would have a place to play golf in peace and quiet. The tournament was known as the Augusta National Invitational Tournament for the first five years, though informally known as the Masters from the start. 

In 1989 – Debbie Gibson is at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the third of five consecutive weeks with Electric Youth. It was the second chart album for Gibson, her second and final Top 10 and remains her only #1. The album produced three Top 40 hits, including the #1 Lost in Your Eyes, and was Billboard’s 16th-biggest album of the year. Gibson, then 18, wrote all the songs on the album and co-produced it.

In 1603 – Queen Elizabeth I of England dies at Richmond Palace southwest of London of an illness History has never identified. What is now known as the Elizabethan Era began when she assumed the throne in 1558, an era perhaps most famous for the theater it produced. She was succeeded by King James VI of Scotland, who took the throne as King James I of England and Ireland and reigned until 1625. 

In 1973 – Nate Archibald of the Kansas City-Omaha Kings becomes the first NBA player to win scoring and assist titles in the same season following a 110-98 loss to the Detroit Pistons. Archibald averaged 34 points per game and 11.4 assists, and his 46 minutes played per game led the league as well. In 1967-68, Oscar Robertson had led the NBA in points and assists per game, but did not win the titles because it was then based on the total number of points and assists nd not the per-game average. 

In 1979 – The Bee Gees are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with Tragedy. The song also went to #1 in seven other countries, including Italy and Great Britain, peaked at #44 on Billboard’s soul chart, and was their 16th-biggest song of the year. It was the eighth of nine #1 songs for the group, all in the 1970s, the most of any act that decade.

1. Donald Trump – The nonsense continues, with America continuing to tolerate government off the top of the president’s head…From closing federal departments created by Congress and which can only be shuttered by them to threatening impeachment of judges who dare rule against him, Trump has taken Constitution and stuffed it in his back pocket. 

2. Columbia University – Noted US university latest entity to cave in and comply with petty and vindictive demands of US dictator…Now, we don’t feel the government should be involved in private education, but First Amendment fans should be looking over their shoulders if they weren’t already. 

3. People’s Republic of Amerika – The 3-hole staple…A hundred years from now all new people – including Americans, if there are any left – will not wonder why Trump did what he did because Trump is a man of zero moral or intellectual substance and is governing as such…No, they will wonder why America tolerated it, why ignorance and lies were ever elected in the first place. 

4. 2026 Midterms – Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters remain “pretty sure” next year’s elections will happen, but the way Trump is laying waste to the Constitution, they’re not certain they will and, let’s be honest, neither are you.

In 1965 – Gemini 3 – America’s first two-man space flight – is launched from Cape Kenndy in Florida. The flight was commanded by Gus Grissom and piloted by John Young, his first of seven orbital launches, including one from the moon, an American record. It was the final spaceflight controlled from Cape Kennedy before such functions were transferred to the new Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston. Previously, the Soviets had launched both 2- and 3-man spaceflights. 

In 2009 – Japan wins the second World Baseball Classic, defeating South Korea 5-3 in ten innings in Los Angeles. It was the second of three WBC titles for Japan, and remains the only 2nd-place finish for South Korea. South Korea had tied the score with a run in the bottom of the ninth, with Ichiro Suzuki getting the go-ahead RBI in the tenth. The next WBC is next year, with the final round scheduled for Miami. 

In 1957 – Tab Hunter is at #1 on Billboard’s Best Sellers in Stores chart – one of several predecessors to the Hot 100 –  for the fourth and final consecutive week with Young Love. It was the second of seven chart singles for Hunter and remains his only Top 10 song. The song also peaked at #1 in Great Britain and at #9 on Billboard’s soul best sellers chart. Versions by Sonny James and the Crew Cuts also charts that year,  by Leslie Gore (1966) and Donny Osmond (1973) also hit the Hot 100.

In 1765 – The British Parliament passes the Stamp Act, a tax on the American colonies. The Act called for many printed items to have a revenue stamp showing the tax had been paid and led to the phrase “no taxation without representation”. The tax was repealed the following year, but colonial resistance set the tone for further resistance to the British, which led to the American Revolution. 

In 1958 – The Kentucky Wildcats win the NCAA basketball championship with an 84-72 victory over Seattle in Louisville. It was the fourth of eight titles for the Wildcats and remains the only national championship game appearance for Seattle. Seattle’s Elgin Baylor was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player…Temple defeated Kansas State in the 3rd-place game. 

In 1975 – Earth, Wind, & Fire is at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Soul Singles chart – for the first of two consecutive weeks with Shining Star. It was the third of 18 Top 10 soul songs for the group and their first of eight soul #1s. In May, the song spent a week at #1 on the Hot 100 and was Billboard’s 7th-biggest song of the year.
