History’s long march.

In 2005 – The nuclear submarine USS San Francisco (SSN-711) collides with an undersea mountain near the Caroline Islands about 350 miles south of Guam in the western Pacific. Despite running into a mountain at greater than 30 knots (about 35 mph), the ship was able to surface and transit to Guam and would return to service in 2009. One sailor died the following day from his head injuries and the investigation revealed that the mountain was not on the charts being used, though other charts showed discolored water in the area,

In 2009 – The Florida Gators defeat the Oklahoma Sooners 24-14 in the BCS National Championship Game at Dolphin Stadium in Miami. It was the third and most recent national title for the Gators, who were coached by Urban Myer. The BCS took the two highest-rated teams in their final survey to play in title games that rotated between four sites and was held from 1999-2014. Both teams finished the season 12-1.

In 2005 – Mario is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second of nine consecutive weeks with Let Me Love You. The song went to #1 in four other countries, peaked at #2 in Great Britain and was also in its second of eleven weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart. The song was Billboard’s 3rd-biggest song of the year, its 8th-biggest of the decade and was Billboard’s biggest soul song of the year. The song was the second of four Top 40 hits for Mario and remains his only #1 song.
