Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1981 – President Ronald Reagan fires 11,359 members of the striking Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization after they ignored his order to return to work. The union had struck on August 3 in violation of federal law. Initially, the government was able to keep half of all scheduled flights in the air by using supervisors, military air traffic controllers, and non-striking controllers, among others, but it would take ten years to get staffing levels back to pre-strike levels.

In 1984 – Joan Benoit of the US wins the first Olympic women’s marathon at the Los Angeles Summer Olympics. Benoit won in 2 hours, 24 minutes, 52 seconds to beat Greta Waitz of Norway by 26 seconds. The marathon and the 3,000 meters were the first Olympic women’s races over 1,500 meters to be held and Benoit remains the only American woman to win an Olympic marathon.

In 1973 – Jerry Reed is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the only week with Lord, Mr. Ford. It was the 17th of 38 Top 40 country hits for Reed and his second of three #1s in a Billboard chart career that spanned from 1962-85. The song also went #2 country in Canada and peaked at #68 on the Hot 100. The song is a satire on the effect the automobile has had on America.
