Extra, extra, read all about it.

In 1801 – Thomas Jefferson is elected president of the United States, defeating Aaron Burr in a contingent election in the House of Representatives. The general election was actually between Jefferson, then vice president, and President John Adams, with Jefferson and Burr running as a ticket. Both Jefferson and Burr received 73 electoral votes because the Constitution at the time did not specify that electors separate their presidential and vice presidential picks. Jefferson won on the 36th ballot in the House, which had begun voting on February 11. Burr would become vice president.

In 1998 – The USA wins the first Olympic women’s ice hockey gold medal, defeating Canada 3-1 in the final game. It was the first of two gold medals for the US (2018), with Canada winning the other five. The US has also won four silver medals and a bronze medal. Finland defeated China 4-1 for the bronze medal.

In 1962 – Gene Chandler is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of three consecutive weeks with Duke of Earl. It was the second of 24 chart singles for Chandler and remains his only Top 10 hit. The song was also in its first of five consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart. The song spent 15 weeks on the Hot 100, eight of them in the Top 10.
