The Diary of a Nobody

Cheapskates rejoice! It’s Read Free Sunday at The Diary.

Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, February 17
The hotel lobby was a frosty 63° when we reported for duty tonite…We noted this to the Assistant Front Desk Manager (AFDM) who advised he had been really busy for a couple of hours and things seemed to get a tad warm at the front desk, so he set the thermostat to a temperature more appropriate for storing meat…To his credit, tho, he offered no objection to my suggestion of raising it, and we bumped it up a few degrees.

The AFDM also advised that there were five guys in 223, which has two queen beds, and that he had turned down their request for a rollaway because 1) they really don’t fit in two queen rooms, and 2) they’re not supposed to have five people in that room…Unspoken was that they could either take the AFDM’s offer or go stay someplace else, and he instructed me not to give them anything else because they already had all our spare pillows and half our linens.

We were sold out tonite, too, the fifth strait sellout for Sparrow, and our Sold Out Bonus (SOB) was just under $80.

The big news is there’s been some clarity issued vis-a-vis the restaurant discount…Recall they discontinued the half-off the first $10 you spend coupon earlier in the week, and the new deal was show your room key for 10% off…Those were all the details, tho, and there were some questions, like how the restaurant would keep track of which rooms used their discount and when…This problem is avoided, tho, when the discount can be used every time you dine there.

It’s rare when you have ten guests in the lobby at zero dark thirty, but that’s what we had this morning…The first four came in about 0130, announcing they were checking in…They were three gals and a guy and the guy said they were probably already checked in, saying they were in rooms 307 and 309, the last name probably Christensen…This was the first sign something was wrong because we don’t have a third floor…The second sign was there wasn’t a Christensen in-house…(A third would’ve been none of their names being attached to the reservation, in which case we couldn’t let them in, but that turned out to be academic.

After we assured them we’re the only hotel with this name in the tri-county area, they get on the horn to, we presume, Mr Christensen, who advised them the town they wanted was on the Interstate a good three hours south here with these roads…It was actually pretty funny…They were all amiable, good-natured sorts despite having spent the last several hours on the road, and after some simultaneous working of their phones, they found accommodations in the next county…We asked how they ended up three hours north of where they should’ve been – they all seemed like bright people who would have these things worked out before hitting the road – and one gal said no one bothered to check too closely, and they were staying here Sunday nite anyway, so they collectively shrugged and headed here.

While they were deciding what to do, the final airline crew arrived at 0215, two pilots and four attendants…Airline crews don’t really require too much work, really…There’s a sign-in sheet, and their keys are already made, so all they have to do is sign in and pick a room…They were all working their phones, tho, because they must have eight hours “behind a door” or they were “illegal”…The weather somewhere must’ve been screwy because not only was this crew hours late, but one airline crew didn’t show up at all.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1030 Saturday until 1730 Saturday…7.0 hours for the day and a woeful 46.5 hours for the week…We don’t know what in the hell is going on here…We were tired when we got home and started dozing off soon after we started reading, but we got to sleep later than we’d hoped and didn’t sleep as long as we wanted…God bless all of you.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
