The Diary of a Nobody/March 27

It’s Read Free Sunday at The Diary. Enjoy.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, March 27
I hadn’t been on the clock more than a few minutes when 261 one called requesting a rollaway…These can be a pain in the neck sometimes, but your hero got off easy tonight…Some keeping score at home might be able to reckon 261 is right down the hall from the guest laundry that has a storeroom behind it – there’s also a laundry chute there – where roll-aways are generally kept…Not only were there several there, but they were fully made up, too, so it was a simple matter to carry it – they don’t actually roll – a few doors down the hall…This was hardly a bulletin, tho, because Head Housekeeper Gloria runs a really squared away department.

The funny thing was the dude tried to tip me with weed…I am not making that up: a baggie of what he insisted was some “primo stuff” was held out, but I declined it…While I fully support everyone’s right to smoke weed, I personally don’t nor, frankly, do I enjoy hanging out with those who do…The guy then announced he wanted to Venmo me some money, but I waved it off and he wasn’t pleased with this, either, but he was sufficiently stoned he wouldn’t have taken offense had I hissed at him…I showed him a palm and said it was my pleasure to serve him and even asked if there was anything else – besides taking his weed, of course, – that I could do for him…He said no and I turned and left.

The big news is the wake-up call greeting was still the one Mark did for Thursday…I am not making that up, either…Evidently, New Guy Gene (NGG) couldn’t be bothered to check it when he worked graveyard the previous two nights…Now, this isn’t the most crucial guest satisfaction standard but I’ll tell you what, while a guest probably won’t decide not to return based on this, it might get them wondering what else might be screwed up here and boy, once they start wondering what else could be wrong, brother, they are going to find it.

So yours truly did the wake-up call greeting and made a big change, too…Usually, when giving the weather I’ll give the forecast, including the anticipated high for today and low for the following night…Tonight, tho, I switched it up…On the theory that the current temperature would be more useful than tomorrow night’s low, I announced it was “currently in the low 20s” before announcing the day’s high and the fact it would be mostly cloudy in town.

I don’t know why an old pro like me didn’t think of this earlier…I mean, most everyone using the wake-up service is leaving town anyway, so tomorrow’s low here going to do them some zero good, so look for this exciting change to be implemented permanently.

That kid in 125 who the cops visited twice earlier in the week was kicked out…Amy said he was actually still in the hospital, tho whether that was for physical or mental observation wasn’t disclosed and I didn’t ask…His dad is in-house now and Amy said he wasn’t taking this too well.

There were two requests for ground transportation tonight…The first was from a guest who was stuck downtown because the Uber/Lyft she had counted on weren’t running and she insisted I could leave the hotel and come get her and her friends without disrupting the basic social order but I had to say no, which she took in good spirits…The second request came from a woman looking for a room, and I had to tell her no, we couldn’t come get her, either…I probably should have asked if she was being beaten or was otherwise unsafe, in which I’d get some information and the cops could swing by and pick her up, but I didn’t tho it should be noted there wasn’t any disharmony in the background and her voice was level and calm.

I was up early enuff (see sleep log below) so yours truly probably could have gotten the first walk of the season in, but by the time Mr Caffeine took hold it would have been too dark tho I know we are all mindful of the reflective vest purchased last year…Recall it was about a year ago we went into lockdown and yours truly started walking because the gym was closed and that was the only exercise option available…We’ll see if we’ll restart them…When to walk would be the only question…I don’t know if walking after getting home after a workout and a soak would be workable, but we’ll see…Like most things in life, it will sort itself out.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1100 Saturday until 1900 Saturday…8.0 hours for the day and 45.0 hours for the week, better than the 42.5 hours last week, but still hardly the total we’re used to.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
