The Diary of a Nobody/February 26

Please, enjoy today’s Diary entry with Sparrow’s compliments. It’s Read Free Sunday.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, February 26
Boy, ol’ Sparrow moved a lot of sundry stand product tonite, over $50 worth, which is a lot for the shift where everybody should sleeping.

Thing is, tho, we have several bands in house and they started filing in from their nite’s work about midnite and they’ve got the munchies, either because they’ve taken advantage of our states liberal – tho more and more common – weed laws or merely because they’re otherwise hungry.

Having bands in house is good…One, they’re better behaved than hockey and baseball teams and they aren’t the type of musicians who smash up their hotel rooms…They’re merely workingmen on the road, just the construction crews we have in house.

One group spend some time in the lobby and one of the guys brings two slices of pizza up, wondering if there was a microwave in the lobby…I said no, but offered the one in the back office and he produced two slices of pizza for immediate heating…He said 30 seconds should do but yours truly is such a pro when it came out it was plain it wasn’t completely heated…Still tho, you supersede guest instructions in situations that only seldom arise, so I took it out, announced my concern but he touched it, pronounced it satisfactory, and headed off.

The big news is there wasn’t any French vanilla creamer for morning coffee service (MCS)!!!…I am not making that up…No doubt because everybody uses it, as regular readers of this crap know it’s our most popular creamer, regularly – tho not always – outdistancing half & half in our famous Creamer Challenges…I made a note on the back office whiteboard.

The brutal cold’s returned and in an attempt to keep the cold water tap in the kitchen from freezing over, ol’ Sparrow left some water dripping in the faucet before heading out for the hotel…This was on the advice of Doc from the Legion, who had stopped by the veterans service (VSO) for a chat last week…We were talking about the cold and I asked about leaving the faucet on because that had been heard before but always ignored. Doc said sure, that’s a good way to keep pipes from freezing and then went on to offer a rather detailed explanation as to why which, it should go without saying, went way over my head…He noted all you needed was a consistent drip, somewhere between a slow drip and a lite stream, there was no need to leave the goddamned faucet all the way on.

All right, a consistent drip was produced and on arrival home this morning BOOM the drip was still going, as consistent as ever…This is good because yours truly doesn’t really want to leave the heater going all nite without a human there…This doesn’t really make much sense, but that’s the way it is, and it’s good to see the consistent drip method (CDM) producing results.

The Portfolio finished very strong on Friday, its best single-day gain since the Depression, resulting in it being up a bit for the week…We’re still down about 10% from last summer’s initial buy-in, tho.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1030 Saturday until 2130 Saturday…11.0 hours for the day and 54.0 hours for the week, the second consecutive personal best, 54-hour sleep week…God bless all of you.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
