The Diary of a Nobody/June 24

Sure, it’s Read Free Sunday (RFS) at The Diary.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Friday, June 23
We weren’t sold out tonite at the hotel – we had enuff rooms for a couple of walk-ins and to move someone, tho we ended up not having to do that – but we were sold-out busy (SOB)…We hadn’t even limbered up yet when 253 called needing a blanket and a couple of pillows, tho the way the hotel’s laid out we were able to get our nightly walk in, saving valuable minutes later.

Later, 157 called to whine their a/c wasn’t a/c-ing: the evil thermostat not cooling the room down to their desired 42 degrees…There really isn’t anything we can do, but some guests find it comforting to have someone come and look at it, even if that person doesn’t know what he’s doing, so we headed over.

Before that, tho, we prepared…We checked the room type and a check showed we had an identical room available a few doors down so we make some keys just in case and head out…On arrival we’re greeted by two men, one of whom takes charge and shows me what the deal is: they have a suite and the thermostat in the bedroom seems to be controlling the a/c unit on the wall, but the thermostat in the living room seems to be controlling squat (or not controlling squat, we’re still not completely sure)…There are also a couple of vents high on the living room wall that aren’t putting out anything.

So we dive in and fiddle around with the living room thermostat and while we manage to adjust something or other nothing seems to be happening and while it’s comfortable in the room, the guy says he likes it really cold at nite, I offer the keys to the identical room, 147…He looks at his partner and he shrugs and then the guy asks if we could scope out the room first.

Of course we can…We head over and it’s the same set-up and he concludes that the only cooling unit is the one in the bedroom, but this doesn’t really make sense because this is a remodeled room and why would they put a thermostat and vents in the living room???…While we were wondering this, the guy said they’ll stay in their current room and he thanked me for my efforts.

Later two drunk guys come by for what can only be described as a sundry stand invasion…A couple of pizzas, some of those chocolate/caramel ice cream bars, two waters, and to reinforce the importance of hydration, there was a Vitamin Water in there, too, but only one, so who knows if they were sharing or not and with our new higher prices the total came out to $35 even…There was so much we even scrounged up a couple of small trash bags to haul it away.

Moderately funny was that they were drunk enuff not to know where the rooms were and, in fact, headed off in the general vicinity of the restaurant first…When we pointed the other way one guy looked at me suspiciously as if he suspected we were pointing them toward a snake pit, but we smiled cordially and they eventually went.

The big news is there was a fresh box of European blend coffee in the back coffee room…This was a tactical error on my part, because when we left Wednesday morning we thought – and it wasn’t even close – that there was more than enuff to last until we got back tonite…And there might’ve been but someone – Chris is the lead suspect, of course – thought otherwise and replaced the old box…All right…We’re not weeping or rending garments over it, but it does mean the knife missed out on some work.

There was excellent strength in the gym tonite…Well, not +1 or 8-rep strength, but good, solid 10-rep strength the whole way…We did have to make do for tricep work because some kid was using our preferred machine, but if that’s out biggest problem this week – and it might well be – we’re doing OK.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0830 Saturday until 1900 Saturday…10.5 hours for the day and 50.5 hours for the week, not quite up to the standard of the past couple of weeks, but nothing to sneeze at, either…We were asleep almost immediately, too, thanks to a shot of Zzz-Sleep.

The only problem with this is sometimes Zzz-Sleep makes you groggy when you wake up, and it was tuff getting out of bed…However, the grogginess disappears after a few minutes and is definitely gone after you take the pre-workout stuff.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
