The Diary of a Nobody/April 11

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, April 11
I’ll tell you what, the old bank account is taking a hit but I am enjoying the extra day off from the hotel…Saturday’s are now like my leisurely Thursday’s off, except for the fact my week at the hotel starts tonight and I have to get a nap in before reporting for duty…I was up early (see Sleep Log below), got the coffee going and since I gave the cat her treasured canned yummies before I went to bed – so she wouldn’t wake me up – I didn’t give her any like I usually do when I wake up…Then I dove in on the morning project work and when that was done I retired to the couch for some reading…Later I’d get up and fart around for a bit before heading out for my walk.

It’s a nice little routine and I like routine so I’ve started looking forward to this…The only fly in the ointment today was as I was reading I started nodding off…I am not making that up…It wasn’t even 0800 and I was ready for a nap…So I went to bed but I didn’t fall asleep – and I tried, earplugs and everything – so I got up and made some carrot juice and took my supplements and got dressed and headed out.

I was still tired and debated whether or not to go, but in a rare display of fortitude, I went…You gotta get your walk-in…The gym is closed and walking is a government authorized activity I’ve enjoyed from the start…I’m still starting out briskly and finishing strong and it’s neat-o noticing the small changes in the neighborhood you miss from your car.

For example, there is a new house being built…I am not making that up…Well, I suppose you could see new construction from your car, but this one is a couple of blocks down on North Street, single-story and they’re really making progress…There’s a new house for sale, too, on Main Street, on the left as you’re heading back from the post office…It actually has two houses on it, both dumps,  and it has a dusty driveway and parking area that would be more at home at the end of dirt lane instead of right there on Main Street, USA…I couldn’t find it online, tho, so I don’t know what they’re asking.

There were a couple of things in the mail…One was a letter from the bank explaining how they fixed the mobile deposit I’d screwed up last week…Recall I deposited two checks and at the first prompt, I entered the total for both checks when I should only have entered the total for the first check…Also recall I called the bank the girl said this happens all the time and not to fret, it will be corrected in a couple of days…It was, and there really wasn’t any reason to send me a letter detailing what they did.

There was also a notice about an election for the local fire district next month…They want to increase property taxes an amount that would cost me, probably, about $10 a year…I routinely vote no on all tax increases on the theory that I’m taxed enough and once the nickel-and-diming starts there’s no stopping it…I voted against the increase that got the news middle and high-school built, too, a measure that passed by only a few votes.

The plan today was, in fact, to go to the next county but I didn’t…I do need some things from retailers like dryer sheets, kitty litter, medium trash bags and shampoo, but I can get these on Sunday morning after knocking off from the hotel…I also could have gone to the Mexican joint but for some reason, I couldn’t be bothered to drive 17 miles, one way.

Speaking of shampoo, hair and beard care is no routine matter now…I am still shaving part of my face, like part of the neck and a small area of the cheeks and the sideburns because that’s how I’m rolling right now…So here’s the shaving procedure: I soak my face with hot water, then add shaving cream all over the place…After letting it sit for a bit, I rinse it off and then shave because heaven forbid some shaving cream obscures an edge that needs to be shaved…I’m using a special wash-that-gray-away wash to get the gray out of the beard, just like its sister product has done on my hair…I’m letting everything sit for a good five minutes before washing it out, too…This is about twice as long as recommended, but the recommended time for quicker results.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log:
1830 Friday until 0230 Saturday
1700 Saturday until 2100 Saturday

12.0 hours for the day and a robust 48.0 hours for the week.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
