The Diary of a Nobody/November 7, 2020

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, November 7
I was an idiot twice at the hotel tonight.

The first time came before I’d even clocked in…Recall Wednesday morning the coffee machine in the back room started leaking…I do get credit for remembering that tonight but I figured it had been fixed, but when I went to press the button nothing happened…I asked Assistant Front Desk Manager Q if he knew anything – actually, if there was anything wrong with the machine – and he said he hadn’t heard anything…Some investigation of the machine showed it had actually been turned off – a clue yours truly ignored – so I turned it on and made some coffee and go to the front desk, preparatory to beginning my night’s labors.

It floods the floor in the back room…Q notifies me of this by yelping and it turns out Q didn’t know the coffee machine was broken because Q hadn’t been told the machine was broken tho to be fair he never makes coffee so nobody saw fit to tell him…Still, tho, these are good things to know simply because they add to your general fund of knowledge.

Idiocy number one.

Then a few minutes later the right drawer came in $21 over when it was actually only $1 over..I didn’t really think too much about this because regular readers of this crap know that sometimes because people don’t always do their drops here, so I dropped the $21 in the safe…Then I dive in and count drawer #2 and I see the spreadsheet you put the totals on shows there are two rolls of quarters listed that I didn’t notice when counting the right drawer…This was because there weren’t two rolls of quarters in the right drawer so that’s $20 bucks right there…I finish counting the left drawer then go back and recount the right drawer and BOOM, it has $180, $20 short, which means it was actually $1 short.

Idiocy number two…I don’t have access to the dropped money, so I tell Tammy about it in the morning and it will be a simple matter to replace the $20.

Speaking of dropping money, the process includes filling out a slip of paper where you note the date and amount and initial it…Some places have actual money drop envelopes for this, envelopes that have every denomination listed on the front and you tally up how much you have of everything, put the money in, and drop it in the safe.

Not here…The money is put in a sandwich baggie and you fill out a piece of scrap paper that’s been cut for the purpose…For the couple of years I’ve been here the scraps have always been square but the big news is tonight they were long rectangles!!!…I am not making that up…This is splendid news because the squares weren’t always all that big and conducive to accommodating ol’ Sparrow’s large printing, but the rectangles are a couple of inches long and more than long enuff…Unclear is which of my genius coworkers is responsible for this.

More big news: yours truly was able to buy that gypsy cold tea he ran out of when he was sickies a couple of weeks ago…Recall I couldn’t find them in town so I looked online this morning and while the first couple of places had the temerity to actually want to charge me shipping that cost more than the actual tea cost, some searching yielded a place that ships for nothing…You do sacrifice time with free shipping, so it won’t be here until next cold and flu season, but yours truly won’t get sick until then anyway, so we should be OK.

Not having an operating coffee pot in the back office meant coffee for Morning Coffee Service (MCS) was made in the restaurant…On Wednesday a waitress there said she used three bags for a pot (they use bigger pots than we do) so that’s what I rolled with but when I filled up our pots we only got two pots instead of the anticipated three…Well, you don’t have to be Juan Valdez to reckon this results in stronger coffee and a field test showed this was the case: it was strong enuff to put in your car for better gas mileage…So this batch was tossed out, a terrible waste of good coffee but what are you going to do.

Really good strength in the gym tonight…Really good…So good that all weights on the last set were moved eleven times, even the bench press, the first time that’s been done at this weight in ages…Key will be the next weight session: if we can get eleven reps on the last set again, it will be time to up the weights…If not, we’ll keep plugging away until we are strong enuff to up them.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1000 Saturday until 1730 Saturday…7.5 hours for the day and 48.5 hours for the week, a great comeback from last week’s lousy total and a strong start to the sleep week.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
