The Diary of a Nobody/June 5

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Friday, June 5
Tantalizingly close to the magic 40 MPG barrier, but still no cigar: 39.58 MPG was the figure when I filled up this morning prior to heading in to the Veterans Service Office (VSO).

I thought we had it, too, based on the miles traveled since the last fillup, but no, it eluded us again and was down a smidgen from last week’s figure...Now, of course, we could round up, but we don’t do that here…We’ll get to 40 MPG on our merits or not at all.

I think the robin’s eggs in the next to the kitchen door might be close to hatching…One, mama robin has been sitting on them for a while now and, while I’m hardly Mr Audobon, it seems the babies should be about ready to favor us with an appearance…Two, when I checked in on them before leaving for the VSO this morning, daddy robin had joined mama robin in the nest…He wasn’t right on top of her, but off to the side…Now, I don’t want to risk death, so I don’t get too close to them, of course, but daddy robin looked every bit like an expectant father, so maybe when I come home today there will be new robins…I hope so because using the front door all the time is getting old.

There were the usual emails concerning my $850,000 inheritance from Edward Sparrow at the VSO today…The original guy emailed just to make sure I was still hearing from the Austrian bank and the bank emailed, too, announcing I would need to appear in Austria to produce some paperwork…On the off chance I was unable to make it to Austria to attend to this matter, they conveniently had contact information for a law firm.

So, finally, they get to the scam: pay the law firm and get nothing for your money…Still tho, to keep matters lively this summer out here, I emailed everyone, including the law firm, saying howdy, tho I announced I was not paying any money out of my own pocket…Any fees or charges can be taken out of the inheritance, which should cause all correspondence to cease immediately, if not sooner.

But I was thinking, why $850,000???…All those Nigerian scams throw out sums like $23 million and crap…On the other hand, these folks are European, so perhaps, they’re a bit more reserved than those zany Africans…I also wondered why the amount is in dollars and not pounds or euros…Plus what if I actually went to Austria???…What would they do then???…Of course, if the whole thing is a scam so there’s no one to see, but Austria’s nice this time of year, or so I’ve heard.

Later, I did further research…Most of the links on their website didn’t work and I called the 800 number they had listed and it didn’t go thru and then Sparrow Master Detective went to Whois and entered the website’s address and the domain is registered to some upstanding citizen in Maine, which seems to confirm it’s a scam, tho I am going to play along, just for funsies…About noon I heard back, itself suspicious because it’s nighttime in Austria and what banker would still be working then???…This was the email that asked for money, $1,750 for a probate letter, certified death certificate and something else…Upon receipt, they would take care of everything and then wire me the money and I’m debating whether to send regrets or to stall them and get the Feds involved…I’m not a snitch and if others are dumb enuff to fall for this that’s their lookout, but it could prove moderately entertaining.

The big news at the VSO is the county building is, slowly, reopening…The car registration office (drivers licenses are in a shopping center near the retailer) is open to walk-ins and appointments and I am authorized to accept appointments now…I’m going to hold off, tho…I’m hardly a worrywart, but I am over 50 (I know, I don’t look it) as are most of my clients and that is a prime risk group for the virus and illness…So I am going to hold off on meeting clients in the office for now and I might just wait until the county completely reopens the building.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log:
2130 Thursday until 0030 Friday
1830 Friday until 2130 Friday

8.0 hours for the day and 37.0 hours for the week…I slept well for the five hours, but I thought there would have been more sleep…The nap was necessary because I am working a the hotel tonight because I need Tuesday off to go to the big city for a Sparrow For US Senate appearance.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
