The big news is, and I am not making this up, the flowing locks are no longer standing straight up on the top of my head; they are – finally – responding to the forces of both gravity and Brylcreem and are combing strait back…Yours truly should probably go to a barber and get the back trimmed, but I can’t see the back, so what the hell.

History’s long march.
In 1993 – The 51- day standoff between Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF) agents and members of the Branch Davidians begins near Waco, Texas after ATF agents attempted to execute a search warrant stemming from suspected sexual abuse and the storing of illegal weapons at their compound. The initial raid resulted in the death of four agents and five sect members and ended on April 19, with the death of 76 more Davidians. The Branch Davidians still exist, in two sects.
In 1981 – Calvin Murphy of the Houston Rockets makes the final free throw in his NBA record streak of 78 consecutive in a 104-103 loss to the San Diego Clippers. Murphy had broken the record of 60 straight established by Rick Barry of the Golden State Warriors in 1976-77 on February 19. The record was broken by Michael Williams of the Minnesota Timberwolves, who made 97 straight free throws over the course of the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons, a record which still stands.
In 1953 – Teresa Brewer is at #1 on Billboard’s Best Seller in Stores chart – a predecessor to the Hot 100 – for the third of four consecutive weeks with I’ll Waltz Again With You. It was the second and final #1 pop song for Brewer, one of 44 hits she had on various pop charts of the era and over her 50-year career, Brewer recorded almost 600 songs in a variety of genres. The song also went to #1 on Billboard’s Most Played by Jockeys and Most Played in Jukeboxes pop charts.

The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.
1. Russia Invasion Of Ukraine – SB5 pollsters “pretty sure” Putin’s line about “maintain(ing) peace” in already peaceful country funniest line by invading leader since Hitler wondered how many Poles it would take to work action on Mauser Karabiner rifle in 1939.
2. USA! USA! – Americans everywhere admiring Russian invasion of Ukraine, noting striking parallels with 2003 US invasion of Iraq, another invasion of sovereign country that did not present direct threat to invading nation’s sovereignty.
3. Donald Trump – The 3-hole staple remains a lying sexual predator who believes that 1) the moon is part of Mars and that 2) the Revolution was won by Continental Army securing British airports, ignorance almost beyond comprehension in anyone older than five…SB5 pollsters still curious as to which of these elements continues to impress adherents and secure their support.
4. Ketanji Brown Jackson– Current federal judge eminently qualified for Supreme Court, but because President Biden had already announced he was hell-bent on nominating Black chick for position, she will probably go down as merely another token appointment…Everyone deserves better than that.
5. Russia– There is no legal, moral, or historical reason for invading Ukraine, of course, but war has been mankind’s calling card since time immemorial and Russian/Soviet leaders have been getting antsy for expansion since Grand Duchy of Moscow in 16th century…SB5 pollsters “strongly suspect” that while sanctioning already rich men probably won’t do much, pesky Ukranians currently putting up strong fight could muck Russian expansion matters up.

History’s long march.
In 1864 – The first Union army prisoners begin to arrive at the Andersonville prisoner of war camp in Georgia. The prison, formally known as Camp Sumter, remains notorious for its violent, unsanitary conditions that saw over 13,000 deaths, mainly from dysentery, diarrhea, and scurvy. Following liberation the following May, prison commander Captain Henry Wirz was tried as a war criminal and was executed in November.
In 1955 – The Boston Celtics and the Milwaukee Hawks establish a new NBA record for the fewest points in a game in the shot clock era in a 62-57 Celtics win in Providence, Rhode Island. It was the first season for the 24-second clock, which had been devised by the owner and general manager of the Syracuse Nationals – now the Philadelphia 76ers – as a way to increase both scoring and fan interest. The 119 total points remain an NBA record for the fewest points in the shot clock era.
In 1999 – Monica is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the third of four consecutive weeks with Angel of Mine, her seventh consecutive Top 10 hit and third consecutive, and final, #1 song. The song also went #55 pop and #10 soul in Great Britain, peaked at #2 on Billboard’s soul chart, and was Billboard’s third-biggest song of the year. In 1997 a version by Eternal peaked at #4 in Great Britain. Monica Denise Arnold was born in 1980 in Georgia.

In 1909 – The first successful color motion picture process, known as Kinemacolor, makes its public debut at the Palace Theater in London. The film was an eight-minute short called A Visit to the Seaside, which had debuted at a trade show the year before. The process involved projecting a black-and-white film behind alternating red and green filters and Kinemacolor would be replaced by Technicolor in 1916.
In 1981 – The Minnesota North Stars and Boston Bruins establish new NHL records for most penalties in a game by both one team and both teams in a 5-1 Bruins victory. Each team had a record 42 penalties to break the single team mark of 38 established by the Philadelphia Flyers in February 1980 and the 84 total penalties broke the record of 64 established by the Bruins and Colorado Rockies in January. The 406 penalty minutes were an NHL record, too, and all three marks have since been broken.
In 1983 – Patti Austin and James Ingram are at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second and final consecutive week with Baby, Come to Me. The song also peaked at #11 in Great Britain, at #9 on Billboard’s soul chart, was their 8th-biggest song of the year and their 11th-biggest soul song of 1983. It remains the only Top 40 hit for Austin and was the first of two #1 songs for Ingram. The year before the song had spent four weeks on the Hot 100, peaking at #73, making it one of the few songs to go to #1 in its second chart run.

In 1933 – The USS Ranger (CV-4), the US Navy’s first ship built from the keel up as an aircraft carrier, is launched at Newport News, Virginia, the eighth of nine US Navy ships to bear the name. Ranger would be commissioned in June 1934, served until 1946 when she was sold for scrap. America’s first aircraft carrier, the USS Langley, had originally been a collier, a ship used to transport coal.
In 1978 – The Montreal Canadiens NHL record 28-game unbeaten streak comes to an end in a 6-3 loss to the New York Rangers. The Canadiens had gone 23-0-5 during the streak, had broken the mark of 23 established by the 1940-41 Boston Bruins, and the record is now 35, done by the 1979-80 Philadelphia Flyers. Rangers goalie Hardy Ashtrom, just called up from the minors, made 29 saves in his NHL debut.
In 1978 – The Bee Gees and other artists are at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the sixth of 24 consecutive weeks with the soundtrack to the movie Saturday Night Fever. The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow strongly suspects a guest is both homeless and demented. Today’s Diary.
Both turned out to be true, tho not immediately…At distance, his hair and beard appeared scraggly, plus he had that general, ineffable air and posture that attends the homeless…However, as he came to the front desk it was plain his hair had been recently barbered and his beard, while long, showed signs of recent attention, too…He did save some face, tho, upholding the Homeless Bylaws by having BO, despite the presence of a shower in his room…

History’s long march.
In 1582 – Pope Gregory XIII issues a papal bull announcing changes to the Julian calendar, changes that would eventually bear his name. The bull was designed to correct flaws in the Julian calendar that were making it tougher to reckon the date of Easter, a movable feast on the Christian calendar. Among the changes were limiting leap years to years evenly divisible by four, except for century years which must be evenly divisible by 400. The Gregorian Calendar came into use in what would become the United States in 1752.
In 1989 – Roberto Duran of Panama wins the WBC middleweight title defeating Iran Barkley in a split decision in Atlantic City. It was the first title defense for Barkley, who would later win super middleweight and light heavyweight titles. Previously, Duran had won the world lightweight, welterweight, and light middleweight titles and he last fought in 2001, finishing with a professional record of 103-16 with 70 knockouts.
In 1990 – Paula Abdul is at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the fifth of ten non-consecutive weeks with Forever Your Girl. The album produced four #1 singles, tying the record for most #1 songs from an album – a record now held by Michael Jackson and Katy Perry (5) – established a new mark for most #1s from a debut album, and its 64 weeks to reach #1 established a record that still stands. It was the first chart album for Abdul and her first of two #1s (Spellbound, two weeks, 1991)
