On Vacation

Valued Readers,

We are on vacation and regular readers of this crap know sometimes we produce our drivel on vacation and sometimes we don’t.

The NCAA Bottom Ten will run next week, of course. Nothing gets in the way of that. Everything else – The Diary of a Nobody, The Daily Dose, and The NFL Bottom Ten – may or may not run as our demanding vacation schedule permits.

Sparrow and the staff of The Daily Dose send their very best wishes for a tolerable holiday season.

The long march to today.

In 534 BC – Greek poet Thespis becomes History’s first actor – the first to recite lines as someone other than himself for the purpose of entertaining others – when legend has it he took to a stage wearing a mask and portraying the god Dionysus. Thespis’ influence is still felt in the English speaking world, with the term thespians coming to represent actors. Thespis was also the first actor to carry costumes and such from town to town.

In 1974 – Alexis Arguello of Nicaragua wins the WBA featherweight title with a 13th-round knockout of champion Ruben Olivares of Mexico at the Forum in Inglewood, California. Arguello would defend the title four times and would later win super featherweight and lightweight titles before retiring in 1995. Arguello remains one of the few fighters to never lose a title in the ring, having relinquished them to fight at heavier weights.

In 1991 – Michael Bolton is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the only week with When a Man Loves a Woman. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #8 in Great Britain and was Bolton’s second and final #1 song. A version by Percy Sledge had gone to #1 on the Hot 100 in 1966, making it the seventh of nine songs to go #1 by different acts. A version by Bette Midler peaked at #35 in 1980 and the song earned Bolton the Grammy Award for Best Pop Male Vocal Performance.

Some Philosophy Crap
The wisdom of the ages. Whatever.

Philosophy  does not mean reading books about wisdom, it means training oneself in the practice of wisdom. The essence of the matter is that a man should so mold his life and conduct that his happiness shall depend as little as possible upon external things.

The Story of Civilization, Vol. III: Caesar to Christ

Answer To The Last Trivia Question

Gerald Ford was the future president of the United States on the Warren Commission.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow deals with a whining guest. Today’s Diary.

About 0600 this guy comes down, takes in the sundry stand, and then starts to whine about its modest offerings:

– Boy, there isn’t too much here…

Look, dorfman, this isn’t fucking Food World…It’s a sundry stand at a small hotel, forgive us if we don’t have a walk-in cooler full of soda or the cigarettes you plainly smoke because you can smell them from five feet away…

The long march to today.

In 1963 – President of the United States John F Kennedy is assassinated while riding in a motorcade in Dallas. Texas Governor John Connally was also wounded and a bit more than an hour later Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested for Kennedy’s murder and the murder of a Dallas police officer. The Warren Commission – named after Earl Warren, the chief justice of the United States – formed by President Johnson, would find that Oswald acted alone, though nobody really believes that. Oswald himself would be shot to death two days later.

In 1961 – Bob Petit of the St Louis Hawks establishes a new NBA record for most free throws made in a game without a miss in a 141-121 loss to the Boston Celtics. Petit made all 19 of his free throws, research into whose record he broke was inconclusive and his mark was broken in December 1992 by Dominique Wilkins of the Atlanta Hawks (23). The record is now held by James Harden, then of the Houston Rockets, who had 24 in a December 2019 game.

In 1969- The 5th Dimension is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the third and final consecutive week with Wedding Bell Blues. The song also went to #1 in New Zealand, peaked at #16 in Great Britain and at #23 on Billboard’s soul chart. It was the second and final #1 song for the group and their fourth of six Top 10 hits. The song was written by Laura Nyro, whose own version peaked at #3 on Billboard’s Bubbling Under the Hot 100 chart in 1966.

The Daily Dose/November 21, 2021
By Gaylon Kent – America’s Funniest Guy™

The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.

1. Kyle RittenhauserAn attention-starved kid goes to defend property he doesn’t own in a state he doesn’t live in and kills two people and gets off scot-free in incident that probably wouldn’t have happened if he’d gotten laid the night before…Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters “strongly suspect” this is not what the 2nd Amendment was designed to protect.

2. Julius JonesJones was a few hours from execution when Tennessee governor grants clemency, allowing Jones to spend rest of life in prison…Clemency granted because there is some doubt as to Jones’ guilt, leaving Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters “pretty sure” if there’s sufficient doubt to let him live there’s sufficient doubt to set him free.

3. Donald Trump – The 3-hole staple…Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters “strongly suspect” future generations will wonder why anyone gave time of day – much less media coverage and votes – to someone who believes 1) the moon is part of Mars; 2) Colorado borders Mexico; and 3) the Revolution was won by the securing of British airports…Plus he will always have blood on his hands for a non-existent COVID response…Which one of these elements continues to earn him support???

4. Peng Shuai Chinese tennis star still not seen in public after having nerve to accuse Communist Party official with sexual assault two weeks ago…Thank God for consistency of spineless IOC, which is keeping quiet on matter so as best not to disturb cash cow that upcoming Beijing Winter Games will be.

5. Zane Floyd – Nevada death row inmate arguing to be shot to death instead of poisoned via lethal injection… Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters have been neither shot nor lethally injected, but willing to bet the former hurts a lot less than the latter and if we insist on executing people, shooting them is, perhaps, the most humane way to do this.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow chats with a guest about living in the small town…Today’s Diary.

I told him it was nice if you like having zero dining options and enjoy doing squat and while it’s affordable compared to in town, it’s not really inexpensive anymore, either…

In 1877 – American Thomas Edison announces the invention of the phonograph. Edison’s first recordings were made on tinfoil wrapped around a grooved cylinder, which could only be played a few times. Later wax cylinders were used with discs introduced in the 1890s. Record player use began to decline with the introduction of 8-track and cassette tapes in the 1960s and declined sharply following the introduction of the CD in the 1980s.

In 1905 – The first Australian Open begins at the Warehouseman’s Cricket Ground in Melbourne with Rodney Heath defeating Timothy Fitchett 6-4, 6-1, 6-0 in a first-round match, with Heath winning the title on November 24th, over Albert Curtis in four sets. The tournament was recognized as a major tournament in 1924 and was known as the Australasian Championships through 1926. The first women’s tournament was held in 1922,

In 1981 – Hank Williams, Jr. is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the only week with All My Rowdy Friends (Have Settled Down). It was the fifth of ten #1 country songs for Williams and the song also went #1 country in Canada. A reworked version of the song by Willaims, All My Rowdy Friends (Are Coming Over Tonight) peaked at #10 on the country chart in 1984.

Next to me was a guy using his usual elliptical who I’ve seen regularly over the years…He takes long strides and he moves the handles in the same manner and he’s always moving his head and glancing up and generally giving the impression he’s going to drop dead in the next few seconds…

The long march to today.

In 1945 – What History refers to as the Nuremberg Trials begin when 24 Nazi leaders go on trial for war crimes associated with the Holocaust and other atrocities in World War II. The trial was presided over by French, US, Soviet and British judges and of the 24, three were acquitted, two were not tried and the rest were found guilty, with eleven sentenced to death. Ten of these were executed in October 1946 with the exception being Hermann Goring, who killed himself before the night before.

In 1966 – The Dallas Cowboys establish a new NFL record for most sacks in a game in a 20-7 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Cowboys had twelve sacks to break the record of eleven that had been done four times previously. The record still stands and has been matched four times since, most recently by the New York Giants in 2007.

In 2020 – Lauren Daigle establishes a new Billboard all-chart record for most weeks at #1 when her single You Say is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot Christian Singles chart for the 111th non-consecutive week. Daigle broke the record established by Wendy Carlos – then Walter Carlos – whose album Switched-On Bach spent 110 non-consecutive weeks at #1 on the Classical Album chart from 1969-72. You Say first hit #1 in July 2018 and spent a total of 132 weeks at the top. It peaked at #30 on the Hot 100 in March 2019.
