The Diary of a NobodySparrow has a routine morning at the hotel, and later has fried baloney with his breakfast. Today’s Diary.

Breakfast wasn’t too bad…You don’t often see fried baloney on a menu, so I got that with my pretty OK biscuits and gravy and it was pretty tasty…Sharon the owner said she makes her own baloney which as near as I can tell is the first time I’ve had homemade baloney.

I’ve long been a fried baloney fan and you don’t see it too often outside of your own home…Offhand, the only other places I’ve seen it are at White Castle, on their breakfast menu, gloriously tucked inside a biscuit or bun, I forget, and at a minor league baseball stadium in Louisville, where the baloney was pretty thick, as I recall.

Criminals, Courtesans, and ConstablesFriends, my latest novel is now available, for $3.99 until later this week when the price goes up a couple of bucks. Criminals, Courtesans, and Constables is about a nice guy who runs high-class call girls in and out of 5-star suites and throne rooms, collects ransoms and runs from the constables. Hilarity ensues.

In 1936 – Richard Hauptmann is executed in New Jersey’s electric chair for the murder of Charles Lindbergh, Jr., the son Charles Sr. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh. Though there were no reliable witnesses that put Hauptmann at the scene of the crime, nor were his fingerprints found anywhere, $14,000 of the $50,000 ransom was found at his house. The young boy was 20-months old at the time of his kidnapping in March 1932 and his body was found in May and it’s believed he died due to a blow to the head suffered during the abduction.

In 1977 – The Montreal Canadiens defeat the Washington Capitals 2-1, becoming the first team in NHL history to win 60 games in a season. The Canadiens finish the year 60-8-12 and would later defeat the Boston Bruins in four games to win the Stanley Cup. Though the record of 60 wins was eclipsed by the Detroit Red Wings with 62 wins in 1995-96, their 132 points is still the NHL record.

In 1961 – The Marcels are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of three consecutive weeks with Blue Moon. Written in 1934 by the Broadway songwriting team of Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart, it had previously charted twice in 1949 when Billy Eckstine and Mel Torme each had Top 20 hits with it. The Marcels’ version went to #1 in five other countries, including Great Britain, and was also at the top of Billboard’s soul chart for the first of two weeks.

The Diary of a NobodyIt’s end of the month at the hotel, while at the retailer the word is out that Sparrow is leaving.

Word has finally spread that I’m leaving the retailer this week and I spent no small amount of time explaining what a veterans service officer does…Recall I gave notice last week and I was surprised it took so long for the word to be passed because the only place where news travels faster than the retailer is a church sewing circle…Everyone was surprised and Supervisors Mary and Maria all but wept.

The Diary of a Nobody: There is not, repeat not, Sunday Spaghetti Nite (SSN) while Sparrow visits The Wife at her housesitting gig. Today’s Diary.

Her main purpose is to take care of the cat and let me tell you something, this cat must have been created by Providence on the Seventh Day because there were no less than four (4) pages of notes on how this fussy feline was to be cared for…Good gravy: water, upstairs and downstairs litter boxes and feeding her all but required a degree from culinary school…Heck, I’m surprised the instructions didn’t include trudging out to the nearby creek for water…For her part, the cat was nice enough, letting me pet her and even hold her, which is something our cat would never allow a stranger to do.

In 1517-  The first April Fools prank is played, when German monk Martin Luther hacks Pope Leo X’s website and posts the first 47 of his eventual 95 theses. Pope Leo immediately took to Twitter to condemn the pesky prelate.

In 1943 – Stan Musial of the Cleveland Spiders becomes the first person in major league history to hit 17 home runs and steal 93 bases in a game, as the Spiders defeat the Louisville Grays 112-2 in a National League game played in Mobile, Alabama. Not only did Musial become the first 17/93 player in the game, he pitched the last two innings for his 23rd save of the season.

In 1968 – A group called the Beatles are at #40 on the Billboard Top 40 with How Deep Is Your Love. The Beatles are a four-man group from Vladivostok led by Mick Jagger and Smokey Robinson and How Deep Is Your Love would spend one week on the chart, making the Beatles the only act in chart history to spend one week at #40 and never hit the chart again.

The Daily Dose/March 31, 2019
By Gaylon Kent
America’s Funniest Guy

Leading Off
The headline – Trump Delivers Fiery Address, or something similar – caught our eye, so we watched part of it. It was part of his heralded ‘victory lap’ taken after the Mueller investigation concluded he did not collude with the Russians to win the presidency in 2016.

This was hardly a bulletin. We’ve long felt  Trump never wanted nor expected to win in the first place so it is was unlikely he colluded with anyone to do so. Something else we’ve thought about is if Trump had the character that belied his breaking the law the report would have been greeted with a yawn, presuming the investigation had happened in the first place.

We try to not to listen too much to the president: his only real talent – an aching need, really – is drawing attention to himself and he’s a blowhard and a blatherskite and, let’s be honest, not everything he says is true. You can disagree with the blowhard and blatherskite labels if you want, but even Trump’s most ardent supporters must yield the last point.

Anyway, Trump used the phrase “collusion delusion” in the speech and he said it in a manner that made him sound like an adolescent, sounding more like a class clown just exonerated after having been accused of throwing spitwads in class than the president of the United States.

Trump’s election was a surprise but his reelection should not be. It’s unlikely the GOP will revolt and not nominate Trump for reelection and the Democrats do not have a unifying candidate that transcends partisan labels and appeals to a broad spectrum of Americans and if they do not produce one hold on to your hats, Trump will probably be reelected.

We deserve better than this, of course, but we are not going to get better until we start demanding it at the ballot box. As long as we keep electing lousy government we will keep getting lousy government.

The Diary of a NobodyThe Wife makes some really good chicken and rice soup and Sparrow gets a jury duty summons. Today’s Diary.

Actually, secret recipe is somewhat of a misnomer because she really just uses whatever happens to be lying around the kitchen and today that happened to chicken and rice and potatoes and whatnot…Sometimes what’s lying around are bones from a recent steak dinner and she’ll put those to work, too and the cat better watch out if the cupboards are ever bare.

In 1966 – The Soviet Union launches Luna 10, another in a series of Soviet lunar missions that on April 3 would become the first spacecraft to orbit the moon. Though the Soviets never put cosmonauts on the moon, the Luna program remains one of mankind’s extraordinary achievements. In 1959 Luna 2 became the first spacecraft to reach the moon, by crashing into it and Luna 3 returned the pictures of the moon’s far side and earlier in 1966 Luna 9 had become the first spacecraft to land on the moon and take pictures. The Soviets lost contact with Luna 10 in May and while nobody knows for certain, it is thought to have ultimately crashed into the moon’s surface.

In 1990 – Joe Sakic of the Quebec Nordiques has a goal, his 38th of the season, in a 3-2 loss to the Hartford Whalers. It is Sakic’s 100th point of the season and establishes two NHL marks: at 20 years, 8 months and 25 days Sakic is the youngest player to tally 100 points in a season and he is the first to do for a last-place team.

In 1973 – Killing Me Softly With His Song by Roberta Flack is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for its fifth and final non-consecutive week. The song also went to #1 in Canada and Australia, peaked at #2 on Billboard’s soul chart and was Billboard’s third biggest hit of 1973. It was the second of three #1s for Flack and earned her Grammy awards for Record of the Year and Best Pop Vocal by a Female.

The Daily Dose/March 30, 2019
By Gaylon Kent
America’s Funniest Guy

Leading Off
The Special Olympics were in the news recently, after President Trump said federal funding for the organization, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, would not be cut only hours after Education Secretary Betsy DeVos had said it would.

(In 2017, the last year we could rustle up figures, the government granted the Special Olympics $15.4 million, a bit less than 12 percent of their total revenues of $134.1 million, a figure which includes $9.5 million in assets released from restriction.)

Now, we like the Special Olympics as much as you probably do. A malcontent reader or two has even suggested we should participate in them. But we don’t think our government should be subsidizing corporations, regardless of whether they are for-profit or non-profit. If you look at the United States Treasury as a repository your money and my money – which is exactly what it is – then you realize subsidies of this sort are nothing more than the government making donations for us.

This is wrong. When you and I, we the people, want to support an organization. we will buy their goods or services or donate to their cause. The government should not be doing it for us. America, deep down, is a caring country. Organizers would have to hustle a little bit, but there is no reason to think the Special Olympics would not continue to flourish without government support.

The Diary of a NobodySparrow has over 90 $20s in his drawer, and the supervisors are cracking down on long breaks again. Today’s Diary.

The supervisors are cracking down on breaks again…Officially, they are 15 minutes, of course, a time that could not be more ignored if prizes were issued for non-compliance…I, myself, can usually be counted on to take a 20-minute respite from my labors and others take longer, and Daniel pissed Anacinth off by reminding her of the 15-minute limit, which caused Anacinth to raise her voice because Anacinth hasn’t even lost her mobile phone at the 15-minute mark…I could’ve copped a short-timer’s attitude and gone straight to the break room after clocking in because what are they going to do, fire me???…I’ve got four shifts left in my farewell tour.

In 1981 – President Ronald Reagan is shot outside the Washington Hilton Hotel by John Hinckley, Jr. Reagan was shot in the chest and suffered a broken rib, a punctured lung, and internal bleeding, but fully recovered. James Brady, the White House press secretary, and Secret Service agent and a Washington, D.C. police officer were also shot and wounded. Hinckley, now 63, was found not guilty because he was crackers and was released from federal psychiatric care in 2016.

In 1925 – The Victoria Cougars of the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL) defeat the Montreal Canadiens of the NHL 6-1 to win the Stanley Cup Finals three games to one. The WCHL was renamed the Western Hockey League the following season, after which it folded and the Cougars remain the last team from a league other than the NHL to win the Stanley Cup.

In 1963 – Don’t Let Me Cross Over by the husband and wife act of Carl Butler and Pearl is at #1 for the tenth of eleven non-consecutive weeks on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart. The song’s eleven weeks at #1 came in four separate stays at the top, beginning with the final week of 1962. The eleven weeks at #1 was the longest stint at #1 for an act’s debut single on the country chart until Florida Georgia Line spent 24 weeks at #1 in 2013 with Cruise.
