The Daily Dose/April 8, 2019

America’s Funniest Guy

Leading Off
One thing you have to admire about President Donald Trump is his consistency. From the day he first announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination two things have been clear: his only real talent is drawing attention to himself and he has no regard for truth or accuracy. He says whatever happens to be resting on the top of his head, whether or not it’s true.

And we’re accepting it. It would be funny if Trump were some adorable old fart we elected because he made us feel good, but he’s not. Our president is a mean, vindictive person who is the most divisive president in any of our lifetimes. Sure, the Associated Press, and others, run regular fact check columns showing where the president is misinformed or maybe out and out lying, and some whackjob hacks get their shorts in a knot over it, but by and large we Americans are accepting Trump’s wholesale falsehoods and are not demanding better.

We do agree, though, with Trump’s overall goal of making America great again and if we want to do that we must do two things. First, baby steps because America must first become average before we can become great again. The America that won World War II and put men on the moon and brought them home again long ago left the building. Our country is a partisan, fractured and bickering mess, more so than at any time except, perhaps, for the years before the Civil War and the 1960s.

Second, vote for someone other than a Republican or a Democrat in 2020. Voting for the status quo is only going to destroy our country. There is no way a government without Republicans or Democrats can do worse because thanks to Republicans and Democrats our country has been at war every day for the last 30 years and we are mindlessly in debt, two factors that will eventually destroy our country, perhaps before this half-century is out.

America cannot continue with perpetual war and mindless debt with impunity. The longer we tolerate it at the ballot box, the closer America comes to self-destructing.

Anyway, the vending machines must have been more than he could handle because he was at the front desk waiting to purchase some snacks from the sundry stand: a Choco-Taco, Oreos, ice cream, a Hot Pocket, and some water…$10.50 worth of post-weed munchies and why he didn’t throw in some of the high-end, hand-crafted potato chips is still not clear…

In 1913 – The 17th Amendment becomes part of the United States Constitution following ratification by Connecticut. The amendment provides for the popular election of United States senators where previously they had been elected by state legislatures. Congress had sent the amendment to the several states for ratification in May 1912 and the proposal was rejected by Utah, while Florida, Mississippi, Georgia, Virginia, Kentucky, and South Carolina have so far declined to take action in the measure.

In 1974 – Henry Aaron of the Atlanta Braves becomes baseball’s all-time home run leader, hitting career home run 715 at home in a 7-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Aaron’s home run came in the fourth inning off of Al Downing and broke Babe Ruth’s record of 714. Aaron’s record would last until 2007 when it was broken by San Francisco’s Barry Bonds.

In 1967 – Aretha Franklin is at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Rhythm and Blues Singles chart – for the third of seven consecutive weeks with I Never Loved a Man (The Way That I Love You). It was the first of a record 20 #1 songs on the soul chart, a mark she shares with Stevie Wonder, and Franklin would have two more #1 soul hits in 1967, spending a total of 17 weeks at the top. I Never Loved a Man also peaked at #9 on Billboard’s Hot 100.

The Daily Dose/April 7, 2019
By Gaylon Kent
America’s Funniest Guy

Leading Off: The Sunday Bottom Five/April 7, 2019
The best of the worst of the week that was:

  1. President Trump
Threatens to close border with Mexico, though, as a practical matter, he can no more close border than he can close Denny’s…Though spiking recently – probably because of chaos in US – illegal crossings still down 1.3 million from turn-of-century.
  2. NCAA Final Four
Pimp, whore, and john like few others, NCAA’s usual feel-good Final Four almost makes it seem like the ‘C’ in NCAA no longer stands for ‘cesspool’ even though it really does…Thanks to Penn State, Michigan State, Sex Abuse to be next sanctioned sport in Big Ten Conference.
  3. Major League Baseball
Season barely a week old and attendance already down 2.5 percent from 2018, which itself was down almost six percent from 2017. Sunday Bottom Five pollsters “pretty sure” games that are too long, featuring more strikeouts than hits both killing game.
  4. Mueller Report
Reaction predictably partisan, though no one – not an R or a D or even your aunt in Reno – dismissed prospect of Trump collusion out of hand…Though some Trump friends have taken it in the shorts, President Trump neither exonerated nor indicted. Thanks, Mueller Report, that solved a lot!
  5. US Supreme Court
Rules that Missouri killer Russell Bucklew is not guaranteed painless execution. Fine, let’s just line every killer up and garrote them because if a painful execution does not violate the 8th Amendment, nothing does.

Editor’s Note: The Sunday Bottom Five is based on the hilarious Sunday Bottom Ten feature that ran last summer, which itself is a derivative of The Bottom Ten columns that run during football season.

In 1989 – The Soviet submarine Komsomolets catches fire and sinks in the Barents Sea north of Norway. The ship was submerged when a short-circuit caused a fire in the engineering spaces and while the ship safely surfaced, the fire continued to burn and the ship sank several hours later and still rests on the bottom of the Barents Sea. 42 of the 69 crew members died.

In 1969 – Bill Singer of the Los Angeles Dodgers records the first official save in major league history, pitching the final three innings of the Dodgers’ 3-2 win in Cincinnati over the Reds. The save was Singer’s only relief appearance of the season and Ron Perranowski of the Minnesota Twins would lead the majors with 31 saves.

In 1983 – Kenny Loggins is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second of three consecutive weeks with Footloose, from the soundtrack of the movie of the same name. The song also went to #1 in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa and was Billboard’s fourth biggest hit of the year. Footloose was the third of five Top 10 hits for Loggins as a solo act and remains his only #1 song.

The Daily Dose/April 6, 2019
By Gaylon Kent
America’s Funniest Guy

Leading Off: Take Me Out To The Ballgame…
46 years ago today Ron Blomberg of the New York Yankees became the first designated hitter (DH) in major league history, beating Milwaukee’s Ollie Brown for the honor by few minutes because Yankees scored three runs in the first inning of their game at Boston while the Brewers went down in order in the top of the first at Baltimore.

We have always thought this change was for the best, though we suspect we’re a minority in that. The DH is opposed by some with much the same vehemence as abolitionists opposed slavery.

But let’s look at this objectively. Pitchers can’t hit and, by and large, they never could. Replacing a pitcher in the batting order with a professional hitter makes the game more interesting and better to watch. Purists looking for strategy can go play chess in the rightfield bleachers while they spill Old Style beer on their scorecards.

Pitchers can’t hit and I am paying good money – presuming I didn’t scam a credential – and I want to see nine real hitters bat.

(Although we’ve got to be honest, one of our main reasons for liking the DH – so starting pitchers are no longer pinch-hit for in the 7th and 8th innings – is no longer valid because starting pitchers are seldom around in the late innings anymore.)

The DH was a great addition to the game, long overdue at the major league level and setting a precedent for other professional leagues, not to mention amateur leagues, where more kid get into the lineup.

The National League should adopt the DH immediately.

In 1965 – Intelsat I, also known as Early Bird, is launched from Cape Canaveral, Flordia and becomes the first communications satellite to be placed in geosynchronous orbit, a fancy way of saying it remains in the same place above the earth. Intelsat provided direct and almost instantaneous phone, fax, and television contact between Europe and North America. It was retired from full-time service in 1969, though it remains in orbit above the eastern Atlantic Ocean.

In 1896 – The first modern Olympic Games opens in Athens, Greece. 241 athletes – all men – from 14 nations competed in 43 events in nine sports. Champions and runners-up were given silver and copper medals, which the IOC later converted to gold and silver medals while retroactively awarding bronze medals to third-place athletes. The participation of women was dismissed by IOC founder Pierre de Coubertin as “…impractical, uninteresting, unaesthetic and incorrect”.

In 1963 – The Chiffons are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second of four consecutive weeks with He’s So Fine. The song was also in its first of four consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart. The Chiffons would reach the Top 10 two more times, later in 1963 with One Fine Day (#5) and in 1966 with Sweet Talkin’ Guy (#10)

Answer To The Last Trivia Question
The first time Congress overrode a presidential veto came March 3, 1845 – the final day of the 28th Congress – when the House and Senate overrode President John Tyler’s veto of a bill having to do with building ships in what would eventually become the Coast Guard.

The Daily Dose/April 5, 2019
By Gaylon Kent
America’s Funniest Guy

Leading Off: Capsule Hot Springs Review: Indian Hot Springs, Idaho Springs, Colorado
One of the nice things about living in Colorado is there are hot springs everywhere. If you dig enough in your yard, you would probably uncover one and this was the main stop on a day trip my wife and I took to Idaho Springs, an old mining that is not without its charms.

We started off in the pool, which, don’t bother with, it was nothing special…Then we went to the caves, separated by gender, and each with pools that have really hot water in them. I asked, because some potatoes that were also in the water were about done, and the worker said the water was at 110 degrees, not masochistically set by management, but hilariously set by mother nature.

110 degrees is really hot to soak in…You do acclimate to it after a couple of seconds, but it is hot enough so you only have, perhaps, a two-to-three minutes window when it is anything remotely pleasant…Anything longer than that and it gets pretty uncomfortable and prolonged exposure to 110-degree water probably isn’t listed on WebMD’s Top 10 Tips For a Long Life. My wife also forked over for the mud baths, where you go and put mud on you and then rinse it off, which for some reason didn’t appeal to me though she gives it very high marks.

Final Ranking: C. Between the older buildings with locker rooms that could use a remodel and the really average pool, we are giving it OK marks. Still, though, we would have given it a B if the 110-degree hot tubs were more practical, but they really aren’t because you can’t soak in them for longer than a few minutes without discomfort. Also, be advised the state is doing some road work on the street leading up to and passing in front of the entrance, though this did not affect our rating.

The Diary of a NobodySparrow and The Wife take a much-needed day trip where The Wife buys her usual boutique soap and also includes a trip to the hot springs.

Anyway, the water in the caves is really, really, really hot…110 degrees hot which is almost hot enough to where you come out ready to be served with your choice of potato…You get used to it after a couple of seconds but for heaven’s sake don’t move because then it’s uncomfortable again…If you stay still, tho, it’s rather relaxing, at least until you move to leave, then you feel like you’re boiling again…You can’t stay in there forever, of course, but I did do three sessions of a few minutes each.

In 1792 – George Washington becomes the first president to veto a bill. Washington vetoed a bill that would have changed the method of how seats are allotted seats in the House of Representatives. A few days later Congress, in no mood to override the veto of the Father of Our Country, would pass an apportionment bill that Washington would sign.

In 1984 – Kareem Abdul-Jabbar of the Los Angeles Lakers hits a baseline skyhook in the fourth quarter of a game in Las Vegas against the Utah Jazz, his 22nd point of the night and the 31,421st of his career, making him the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. Abdul-Jabbar broke the record of 31,419 established by Wilt Chamberlain, and he retired after the 1989 season with 38,387 points, a record that still stands. The Lakers won the game 129-115.

In 1975 – Minnie Riperton is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with Lovin’ You. The song was co-written by Ripperton and her husband Richard Rudolph and co-produced by Rudolph and Stevie Wonder who, due to label conflicts, is credited as El Toro Negro. While a follow-up hit peaked at #76, Ripperton is one of the few ultimate Top 40 one-hit wonders, an act whose only Top 40 hit went to #1.

The Daily Dose/April 4, 2019
By Gaylon Kent
America’s Funniest Guy

Leading Off
The US Supreme Court ruled this week that the condemned inmates do not have the right to a painless execution. They ruled 5-4 in a suit filed by Missouri inmate Russell Bucklew who has a rare medical condition that he says will result in severe pain if he is given death-causing drugs, a violation of the 8th Amendment’s prohibition of cruel and unusual punishment. His suit had been dismissed by both district and circuit courts.

The majority’s opinion was written by Justice Neal Gorsuch, Like you probably did, we read the majority opinion:

As originally understood, the Eighth Amendment tolerated methods of execution, like hanging, that involved a significant risk of pain, while forbidding as cruel only those methods that intensified the death sentence by “superadding” terror, pain, or disgrace. To establish that a State’s chosen method cruelly “superadds” pain to the death sentence, a prisoner must show a feasible and readily implemented alternative method that would significantly reduce a substantial risk of severe pain and that the State has refused to adopt without a legitimate penological reason.

Bucklew’s attorneys offered nitrogen gas as an alternative, but this was dismissed by the district court and upheld by the circuit court. Bucklew was not otherwise challenging the legality of his execution in general, or lethal injection procedure specifically, nor is this a last-ditch appeal based on some halfwit claim of innocence. Bucklew had never denied committing the 1996 murder of a man who had the nerve to be living with his ex-girlfriend.

Fine, then, let’s just line everybody up and slit their throats with a dull knife because if a painful state-sanctioned death does not violate the 8th Amendment we don’t think anything does. In fact, we’ve long felt that death itself is an unusual punishment.

Friends, how much vengeance do we, collectively as a nation, need to extract? Isn’t it enough that murderers are put away for the rest of their lives?

We think it is. The government does not need to be providing painful deaths to old, sick men. Besides, this nation has executed innocent people, which is reason enough to shut the whole system down.

In 1841 – President of the United States William Henry Harrison dies of pneumonia, a mere 31 days after taking office, the shortest presidential administration in American history. Vice President John Tyler, amidst significant debate as to whether he was president or acting president, succeeded Harrison and, due in no small part to his insistence in the matter, was recognized as president of the United States.

In 1986 – Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers has three assists as the Oilers lose to the Calgary Flames 9-3. The first assist gives Gretzky 213 points on the season, a new NHL record, breaking the mark he had established in the 1981-82 season. Gretzky finished the season with an NHL-record 163 assists, a mark he broke earlier in the season with his 136th assist.

In 1981 – Being With You by Smokey Robinson is at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Soul Singles chart – for the first of five consecutive weeks. It was Robinson’s second #1 as a solo act on the soul chart and Being With You also peaked in the runner-up spot on Billboard’s Hot 100. Robinson had also gone to #1 four times on the soul chart as a member of the Miracles.
