Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Sunday, June 24
It is always good to come home…I pulled in a bit after 1200 after avoiding the big city and taking the back way home…This drive is always a treat, about 20 minutes longer but about the same mileage wise…It’s all two-lane road and there are a couple of 10,000-foot passes and whatnot and it sure beats the big city.

I’m relatively certain the cat was glad to see me…She was at the door and requested tummy rubs and pets and then she started meowing for her treasured canned yummies, which she hadn’t had for three whole days…Then I cleaned her cat box, which was about a day away from obliging her to crap on the floor and then I started in on the yard…The goddamned weed killer I sprayed had done some zero good…Every weed was still alive, mocking me as the grass around it was turning browner by the second…I started in on some hand watering, focusing on the brown areas…Then I watered the plants, the hanging plants and the apple tree and the iris and the rhubarb and then the indoor plants, and there a few of them, got watered.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sat 6/23/2018

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, June 23
Lunch today was the usual Saturday Past Commanders Club luncheon, so named even tho current commanders are welcomed (forced) to join…The speaker was a thugish looking guy and I had rock-bottom expectations for him initially, thinking all he could do was grunt…I was wrong…His name was Von and it turns out he did eight years in prison for killing someone while driving drunk…He got his act together in prison and had a successful mortgage business and was a motivational speaker…I ended up liking him but, crap, dude, someone died because you got sloshed and took the wheel…I was rather fascinated looking at him because I don’t think I’d ever seen someone who killed someone like that.

The Past Commander’s Club gave out $1,000 to various Legion programs  and in pretty short order, too…As soon as Tony gave the finance report announcing we had $1,002 in the bank we had several motions issued and seconded and approved giving away $250 to four programs, leaving us two bucks in the bank…Fortunately, Von contributed $200 and they passed the hat and collected $300 more so we are solvent again.

The Diary of a Nobody – Fri 6/22/2018

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Friday, June 22
Stanko is the slowest eater!!!

We are at lunch at the burger place we always go to when the convention is here…He got his usual fried pork sandwich (which he takes dry, by the by) and I got a burger and cheese curds and his was delivered before mine, well before mine because they forgot about me and when it finally was delivered it was cold…So I took it back and they handled it in good spirits and brought me new one, to include fresh cheese curds, and despite this head start I still finished way ahead of him…Not that it’s a race or anything, but if ol’ Sparrow entered a fast eating contest I would probably be in danger of winning.

This was after we took my car into a brake repair place…The brakes started making grinding noises on the way down and rather than wait to for the inconvenience and extra expense of taking care of it back home I took care of it here…This is one of the advantages of the big city and, in fact, they had it ready by mid-afternoon.

Daily Report: Friday, June 22, 2018

Sparrow finally sees The Wife after a bit more than a month on today’s edition of The Diary of a Nobody…She is still at a retailer in the big city, but Sparrow is at a convention about an hour south and they enjoy a belated celebration of their anniversary at one of their fave restaurants.

Today’s Thought for the Day is from two years back, from Deng Ming-Dao, a regular contributor to the feature. This is one of our all-time favorite quotes, discussing the optimism that attends the start of all endeavors.

The On This Date feature will return.

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Thursday, June 22, 2018
Saw The Wife today!!!…About time…Good gravy, it had been at least a month – and it will be at least another week before her return to The Shire – and it was long overdue.

Actually, she had already checked into the room after my day’s labors at the Legion state convention…I had tried to check in early – rich, coming from me, I know, but hope springs eternal – and when I did I put her name on the room and when I went to check in at 1630 or so they girl merely asked if I wanted a key.

The Diary of a Nobody – Wed 6/20/2018

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Wednesday, June 20
I clocked out a half-hour late again at Hotel B, but this time I was actually working…GM Adam showed up a bit before 0700, right on time.

I knew the call would be trouble from the start…You sense things after enough time in any business, and I sensed it here…The lady first called about 0530 wanting to confirm a reservation her boss theoretically made for her…Didn’t have one…Not in her name, not in her bosses name, not in the company’s name and it wasn’t for this day next month either, which sometimes happens, too…She insisted someone made a reservation for her but I can’t shit reservations…We don’t have one…I’m sorry…I encouraged her to contact her boss and to make sure they had the right hotel…About an hour she calls back and with a pleased tone in her voice and insists she has the right hotel…I offered apologies, again, and said we still did not have a reservation for her…She sounded sad when we rang off.

Daily Report – Wednesday June 20, 2018

Good morning GaylonNation and thanks for stopping by. Here is what’s on tap for you today:

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow does the lawn! He also sprays for weeds, in contravention of The Wife’s edict they keep the yard as organic as possible, but The Wife is still out of town. Sparrow also continues preparation for this weekend’s Legion state convention.

The Thought for the Day –  We did not produce a Thought for the Day either one or two years ago, so today we feature one from January of this year from John Wooden. We grew up in Los Angeles and can remember Coach’s last couple of national titles and we went to his basketball camp a couple of times, too. Coach’s influence on us remains profound because long after we have had to pass and pick away or block out, the lessons about patience and effort still serve us well. Today Coach talks about doing what you can instead of worrying about what you can’t do.

On This Date:
In 1756 – 64 British prisoners of war are imprisoned in a 14’x18′ cell at Fort William in Calcutta overnight, resulting in the death of 43 prisoners. There were so many prisoners in the cell the Bengali jailers had trouble closing the door, and prisoners started dying within three hours. The survivors were released the following morning. History refers to the cell as the Black Hole of Calcutta.

In 1936 – Jesse Owens of Ohio State sets a world record of 10.2 seconds in the 100-meters at the NCAA Track and Field Championships in Chicago. Owens would also win the 200-meters, the 220-yard low hurdles, and the long jump, then known as the broad jump. Owen’s 100-meter record would be tied ten times by seven people, but would not be broken for 20 years.

In 1981 – Medley by Stars On ascends the #1 position on Billboard’s Hot 100, up from the runner-up spot. The full title of the song includes all ten songs included in the medley and at 41 words it remains the longest song title to hit #1 on the Hot 100. The Stars on 45 Medley was both preceded and succeeded at #1 by Kim Carnes’ Bette Davis Eyes.

The Diary of a Nobody – Tue 6/19/2018

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Tuesday, June 19
Got the lawn done today…I am not making that up!!!

I had planned to let it go until I got back from the Legion state convention because I wanted to give it some time to grow on the exciting, new medium setting I used last week, but it was a gorgeous day, not too hot, and the lawn needed a trim and Lord knows I was up early enough, so there I was.

First, tho, I had to go and get gas…Not only was the mower low, but the gallon can was out, too…Then I had to clear the yard…Good gravy, we’d had some wind recently and there were twigs and branches everywhere…The smaller ones, of course, I just mow over, but the big ones even I know you gotta move and today my commitment to Total Lawn Care was such that I even broke them down and put them in the trash can.
