The Daily Dose/March 12, 2022
By Gaylon Kent – America’s Funniest Guy™

The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.

1. FOX News – In documents from their defamation lawsuit, it turns out not even FOX believed the nonsense they were spewing during Trump Era…Then why broadcast it???…Well, to increase wealth, influence, and power, of course…Our media is like our government: we get what we choose to accept and tolerate.

2. Cyclone Freddy – Zany oceanic storm  had so much fun during February visit to Madagascar it turned around and went back after stop on African mainland and is now longest tropical cyclone ever…Storm formed northwest of Australia (check your atlases, folks) on January 30, and is now northwest of Madagascar, preparing for second invasion of east Africa.

3. USA! USA! – The 3-hole staple…Far-right looking to make America great again, but how about we work our way up to ‘average’ first as partisan, fractured, debt-ridden US remains far closer to the oblivion that awaits it than to the respect and prosperity she once enjoyed…Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters still “strongly suspect” America has until half-century is out to show it can govern itself before someone comes in and does it for us.

4. World Baseball Classic A nice little tournament in theory, but a classic yay/boo situation…Yay: the concept, having some games in Asia, the finals at the gorgeous Marlins’ stadium in Miami…Boo: no one is in midseason form plus it’s the first in six years and be honest, you never really missed it.

5. President Joe Biden – Hardly ray of hope US is looking for in 2024 race…In speeches in Kyiv and Warsaw he tended to sound like a conqueror in Russian/Ukraine war, despite fact war is far from over, much less won and US is half-assing their support of Ukraine anyway.

In 1933 – Franklin Roosevelt addresses the United States for the first time as president, eight days after his inauguration, the first of his fireside chats. Mired in the Great Depression and facing the failure of many American banks, Roosevelt had closed all American banks on March 6 and on the 9th Congress had passed the Emergency Banking Act.  Roosevelt spoke for 13 minutes from the Diplomatic Reception Room at the White House in front of assorted members of the press. Between 1933 and 1940 Roosevelt would give 30 such fireside chats.

In 1992 – Don Nelson, then in his first stint as head coach of the Golden State Warriors, becomes the first person to participate in 2,500 NBA games as a player and a coach when the Warriors lose to the Detroit Pistons 119-112. Nelson would retire in 2010 having played and coached in 3,451 NBA games, 2,398 as a coach, and 1,53 as a player.

In 1983 – Billie Jean by Michael Jackson is at # on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second of seven weeks. It was the first of two #1s from the album Thriller and the fourth of 13 #1 songs Jackson had as a solo act. The song went to #1 in nine other countries, including Great Britain, and was also in its fifth of nine weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart. Billie Jean was Billboard’s second biggest hit of 1983.
