Notes from around the human experience…

MONEY TALKS: There’s been a lot of talk lately about a living wage and how not every employer is paying one to their workers. We’ve always found these interesting because it really isn’t an employer’s responsibility to ensure a living wage and it will not be a bulletin to regular readers that we do not believe it is the government’s job to mandate this, either.

Get Your Official Daily Dose Policy Right Here: It is every working person’s personal responsibility to ensure they are paid a living wage. Anyone not thrilled with the money they are making are free to put themselves in a position to make more, something we’ve done from time to time over our working lives and, in fact, are still doing.

Step By Step: First, identify the money you want/need to make. And don’t say $10 billion either. Be reasonable. Make sure it’s an amount commensurate with what you can reasonably expect your talents, initiative to earn for you.

Thank You…Now What? Then identify the jobs that pay that amount, as well as the skills and experience that will be required to reach that goal.

Oh Hell: Finally, we must be willing to put in the time and effort required to put us in a position to get that job. It ain’t going to be easy because every day there will a myriad of distractions. It will take effort and commitment but these two old friends seldom fail us. A good plan properly executed usually yields dividends and once you set yourself on the right path, you may well be surprised to find what you wanted was seemingly there for the taking all along.

Some Philosophy Crap: Louis L’Amour in his fine autobiography Education of a Wandering Man said it best:

Everyone has it within his power to say, this I am today, that I shall be tomorrow.

This includes earning a living. No employer is going to pay one penny more in wages than they have to; it’s the way a free market is built. By the same token, employees do not have to take whatever an employer initially offers, either. Some offer no option, but you might be surprised. Some gumption and a proven track record can often lead to negotiating a higher wage, especially with unemployment low like it is now and employers needing good people.

Thank You Mr Success Guru: We cannot be afraid to make something good happen for ourselves. Some initiative and some work and soon enough we can have the working life we want.

The Diary of a Nobody
Sparrow has a slow day at the Veteran Service Office (VSO). Today’s Diary.

All the ladies do in the Building Office next door is gossip…They make a church sewing circle seem discreet by comparison…I’m never entirely sure who or what they are gossiping about because they talk in hushed tones, but I know women gossiping when I see them…I’ll walk in to send a fax or put something in the refrigerator and there they are talking intently and completely ignoring me…I know not even to issue greetings here…If what’s-her-nose is back in her office leaving the gals up front alone, then it’s OK because Heidi and Tammy don’t gossip alone, they prattle, a completely different form of female communication.

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life.

The Bottom Ten/NFL Week 8It’s on. The Dolphins and the Bengals remain unvictoried in the race for The Dan Henning trophy, symbolic of NFL Bottom Ten supremacy.

Here are some funny lines from today’s NFL Bottom Ten:

Strength-of-schedule points for beating winless Miami not enough to prevent Redskins exit from B-10 medal stand, but enough to keep them in top half of survey…

City already abuzz over Nov. 10 matchup vs. Jets for Ed Koch Kup, symbolic of Gotham football ineptitude…

Chargers stadium workers would tarp over end zone seats – at least until high school playoffs begin – but ticket demand by visiting team fans too high…

On This Date
In 1781 – Battle of Yorktown (Virginia) ends on this date as the British Army, which had been under siege since Sept. 28, sends a drummer and an officer waving a white flag towards the US/French lines. The end of the siege marked the last major land battle of the American Revolution and a formal surrender would be signed two days later. Almost 8,000 British soldiers and sailors were taken prisoner, most of whom were paroled and returned to England. The American Revolution officially came to an end in May 1784 when America and Great Britain exchanged ratified copies of the Treaty of Paris in Paris.

In 1860 – The first British Open golf tournament – known as the Open Championship in Britain – is held at Prestwick Golf Club in southwest Scotland. Willie Park, Sr. defeated Tom Morris, Sr., both of Scotland, by two strokes over 36 holes, three times around the 12-hole course. The British Open was played annually until 1871, when no trophy could be found to issue the champion, and then yearly until World War I. Prestwick would host the first twelve British Opens and last hosted it in 1925.

In 1960 – The Drifters are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of three non-consecutive weeks with Save the Last Dance For Me. The song also went to #1 in New Zealand, peaked at #2 in Great Britain and would later reach #1 on Billboard’s soul chart. It was their second of five Top 10s on the Hot 100 and remains their only #1 song and was their fifth and final #1 on a Billboard soul chart. Lead vocals were sung by Ben E. King, who shortly thereafter left the group.
