The Diary of a Nobody/March 20

It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, March 19
There was a note from Tammy at the right computer monitor at the front desk when I reported for duty…Front Desk Manager Brandon actually pointed it out, after noting that Assistant Front Desk Manager Q and New Guy Gene hadn’t done a whole hell of a lot when they did the night audit the night before.

Tammy noted, among other things, creamers hadn’t been stocked in the morning coffee service (MCS) drawer, plus the heinous crimes of the coffee being cold and the sundry stand not being stocked….There were other things, too, all of which violate Rule #2 of being a night auditor: don’t let the rascals on day shift wonder what in the hell you are doing all night.

It’s not easy to put out cold coffee…In fact, short of putting ice in the jugs, there are only two ways to do it: trot out the previous day’s coffee or make it one pot right after the other, without waiting for the hot water to reload on the coffee maker.

Tammy also pointed out there three items in the welcome basket, something whose meaning still escapes me…I have no idea what the welcome basket is, nor am I up on exactly what could/would be in it…Not only that, the Dynamic Duo declined to produce a wake-up call message…I listened to see if one needed to be made for tonight and was greeted by Mark telling me what a beautiful day Thursday was going to be…Good gravy, tey

We were sold out and, odd for a sold-out night, nobody needed a room, something regular readers of this crap know is extremely rare…There were no phone calls, no guys needing an immediate place to mate, no walk-ins who’d neglected to plan ahead…Tonight was a stark contrast to the same night last year, when we had 15 rooms rented and $1200 in revenue.

The big news – and it’s about as big as it gets – is we are no longer delivering folios to departing rooms!!!…I am not making that up…Brandon said we were down to our last few of the doohickies we put the folios in and we start emailing folios tomorrow, but there weren’t any doohickies made up for tonight and I couldn’t find any in the storeroom so BOOM yours truly utilized his sort of all-encompassing nite auditor powers and unilaterally implemented that policy tonight.

Let me tell you something, delivering folios is, was, a pain in the arse and something I didn’t particularly enjoy doing and it’s good to be rid of this duty…It’s been rumored for a while, too, and Brandon noted former GM Barbara had been on him to make this change for a while now…It’s really easy to do, too…You bill the credit card as usual, and then you hit the Folio button and instead of hitting Print you hit Email and a box shows up and if there’s an email address you hit Send and if not you hit Close and then Print…Such folios were left to Tammy to distribute if the guest came by asking for one.

Now, that doesn’t mean you don’t go and walk thru the hotel, tho…That’s part of what you’re paid for, to know what’s going on…Now, ol’ Sparrow has wandered a lot of hotel hallways over the years, and experience tells you this doesn’t have to be done every hour on the hour, but it does have to be done once because you never know.

Yours truly finally got around to setting up the new computer when he got home…The knife played no small part, helping to open the box and removing that infernal clear plastic wrap everything was enclosed in and all in all it took about 20 minutes to set up, I suppose…It was also pleasing to note that while it took a couple of tries, yours truly was able to remember The Shire’s wifi password.

Offhand, I’m calling it Computer Purchase of the Year…It’s a wonderful machine, way faster than the old one – hardly a bulletin since the old one was five years old, but still – and the keyboard has volume control buttons, which completely rules, too and the extra C note I spent appears to have been a smart move.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 1400 Saturday until 2130 Saturday…7.5 hours for the day and 42.5 hours for the week, a paltry and depressing total those in a gulag would scoff at, but a fresh sleep week starts Sunday and we’re going in with a good attitude…God bless all of you.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

It was inspired by the 19th-century British novel of the same name.
