Editor’s Note: though we try to avoid re-running items in this segment, time constraints oblige us to run the same items from last year. Apologies are issued.

In 2001 – FBI agent Robert Hanssen is arrested for spying as he was taping classified information for the Russians to the bottom of a bridge at a county park in Virginia. Hanssen was discovered after the FBI paid $7 million to the KGB for the file on an anonymous spy, later identified as Hanssen. Hanssen pled guilty the following year and, now 76, is serving 15 consecutive life sentences at the federal supermax prison in Colorado.

In 1970 – Bobby Orr establishes a new NHL record for goals in a season by a defenseman in a 5-5 tie with the Los Angeles Kings. Orr’s first-period goal was his 22nd of the season, eclipsing the mark he had set the season before. Orr finished the season with 33 goals and would break or tie the mark three more times before it was broken by Doug Wilson of the Chicago Blackhawks with 39 in 1981-82. The mark is now held by Paul Coffee of the Edmonton Oilers, who had 48 in 1985-86.

In 1984 – Michael Jackson is at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the 29th of 37 non-consecutive weeks with Thriller. The album had first gone to #1 on February 26, 1983, and was Billboard’s biggest album of both 1984 and 1983, becoming only the third album to be the #1 album for consecutive years. The album went to #1 in many other countries, including France, Australia, and Great Britain and with over 47 million certified copies sold, remains the biggest-selling album in history.

History’s long march.

In 1621 – Myles Standish is elected commander of the Plymouth Colony militia. Standish had served in the English army before being hired as a military adviser to a group of Puritans who were sailing for the New World. As a commander, Standish earned a reputation for taking preemptive action, as well a reputation for brutality towards Native Americans and he would be elected commander for the rest of his life. Standish retired as an active soldier in the 1640s, retiring to a town a bit north of Plymouth, serving in an advisory capacity thereafter.

In 1974 – Richard Petty becomes the first driver to win consecutive Daytona 500 races at the Daytona Motor Speedway. Petty defeated Cale Yarborough by 47 seconds and had an average speed of 140.894 mph in a race that, in deference to the ongoing energy crisis of the time, only went 450 miles. Petty’s feat would be duplicated by Yarborough in 1983-84 and Sterling Marlin in 1994-95. It was the fifth of a record seven Daytona 500 wins for Petty and the 2022 Daytona 500 is scheduled for this Sunday.

In 1973 – The O’Jays are at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Hot Soul Singles chart – for the first of four consecutive weeks with Love Train. It was the third of 20 Top 10 soul hits for the group, their second of ten soul chart #1s and Love Train would later spend a week at #1 on the Hot 100 to become their only #1 pop hit. The O’Jays took their name from Cleveland DJ Eddie O’Jay and the song was written by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow hits the gym for a rare Tuesday session. Today’s Diary.

Another consideration was 19 hours of sleep the past two days: that’s a full measure of rest for Sunday and Monday and if ol’ Sparrow went straight home he wasn’t likely to get to bed before noon – at the earliest – even with a quart of Zzz-Sleep in him, presenting another reason not to go strait home.

History’s long march.

In 1923 – Englishman Howard Carter unseals and enters the burial chamber to Egyptian King Tutankhamun’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings, a bit north of Luxor. The tomb had been discovered the previous November and Carter spent ten years analyzing and cataloging the chamber’s inventory. Tutankhamun reigned from c. 1332-23 BC and was believed to be around 18 or 19 when he died, presumably of natural causes, though History has chosen not to record his cause of death.

In 1980 – Eric Heiden of Madison, Wisconsin establishes a new Olympic record in winning the gold medal in the 5,000 meters speed skating event at the Lake Placid Winter Games. Heiden won the race in 7 minutes, 2.29 seconds, and research into whose record he broke was inconclusive. The previous day Heiden had won the 500-meter race and would later win the 1,000, 1,500, and 10,000-meter races – the only person win all five races at a single Olympiad – and Heiden remains the only person to win five gold medals in any sport at a single Winter Olympics

In 2013 – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Wanz are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the third of six non-consecutive weeks with Thrift Shop. The song went to #1 in many other countries, including Norway, Brazil, and Great Britain, was also in its fourth of 14 consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart, and in its fifth of 15 consecutive weeks at #1 on its rap chart. The song was Billboard’s biggest pop, soul, rap song of the year, its 27th biggest song of the decade, and its biggest soul and rap song of the decade. It was the second and most recent #1 song for the duo and remains Wanz’s only appearance on a Billboard chart.

The district attorney phoned, too, advising that the guy who went banshee on me at the hotel was making a court appearance Wednesday…It was a voicemail, so I wasn’t able to ask if he was going to make a plea or what and wasn’t interested enuff to call back and ask.

History’s long march.

In 1214 – An English invasion force led by King John lands in western France in an attempt to reclaim Normandy. John’s army, however, was repulsed, a peace treaty signed and John returned home in October. King John had domestic problems, too, as a group of rebelling land barons had occupied London, where negotiations with rebel leaders resulted in the Magna Carta in June 1215. Though influential US governing documents, the agreement was never really followed by either side and led to the First Barons War later in 1215.

In 1932 – Eddie Egan of the United States becomes the first athlete to win gold medals in different sports at the Summer and Winter Olympics when he wins the gold medal in the four-man bobsled at the Lake Placid Winter Games. In 1920 Egan had won a gold medal in the light-heavyweight boxing and his feat has not been duplicated. Gillis Grafstrom of Sweden has also won gold medals at both Winter and Summer Olympics, all in figure skating.

In 1975 – Linda Ronstadt is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with You’re No Good. It was the third Top 40 hit for Ronstadt, her first of nine Top 10 hits, remains her only #1 song and Ronstadt’s album Heart Like a Wheel was also in its only week at #1 on Billboard’s album chart. The B side of the single, I Can’t Help It with Emmylou Harris, peaked at #2 on Billboard’s country chart; in 1963 a version of You’re No Good by Betty Everett peaked at #51 on the Hot 100.

History’s long march.

In 1990 – The US spacecraft Voyager 1 takes what History refers to as the Pale Blue Dot photograph, a picture of Earth from over three billion miles away. The picture shows Earth as a dot amongst bands of sunlight reflected by Voyager I’s camera and is actually a combination of three photos taken with different filters. Due to other missions having priority to use the Deep Space Network, Voyager didn’t send its pictures back until spring, the images taking over five hours to travel the 3.7 billion miles to Earth.

In 2019 – Russell Westbrook of the Oklahoma City Thunder has a triple-double in his NBA-record eleventh and final consecutive game in a 131-122 loss to the New Orleans Pelicans. Westbrook had 44 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists in the game and the streak would end in his next game, on February 22 against the Utah Jazz. In his previous game on February 11, Westbrook had broken the record of nine consecutive triple-doubles established by Wilt Chamberlain in March 1968

In 1976 – The White Knight by Cledus Maggard & The Citizen’s Band is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles chart – for the only week. Cledus Maggard was the stage name of Jay Huguely, an advertising salesman who wrote the song as part of a CB radio ad campaign. The song also peaked at #19 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and remains his only Top 40 appearance on either chart. The song was one of three #1 country songs that year capitalizing on the CB radio craze, following Convoy by CW McCall and preceding Teddy Bear by Red Sovine.
