History’s long march.

In 1837 – Richard Mentor Johnson, a Democrat from Kentucky, is elected vice president of the United States by the US Senate in what is known as a contingent election. Johnson’s running mate, Martin van Buren, had won election to the presidency with 170 electoral votes, however not every Van Buren elector voted for Johnson, leaving him one vote shy of an electoral college majority. Johnson defeated Whig Francis Granger 33-16 in an election where senators voted individually and this remains the only time the US Senate has elected a vice president.

In 1936 – The NFL holds its first player draft, with Jay Berwanger of the University of Chicago the first player selected, by the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles later traded Berwanger’s rights to the Chicago Bears, but Berwanger declined to sign in order to preserve his amateur status for an ultimately unsuccessful try to make the US Olympic team as a decathlete. Berwanger was later unable to come to terms with the Bears and Berwanger went into business, a decision he later said he regretted.

In 1968 – Tommy James and the Shondells are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the second and final consecutive week with Crimson and Clover. It was the ninth Top 40 hit for the group, their fifth of eight Top 10 hits, and their second and final #1 song  (Hanky Panky, two weeks, 1966). The song went to #1 in four other countries, including Switzerland, did not chart in Great Britain, and was Billboard’s 10th-biggest song of the year. In 1982 a version by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts peaked at #7 on the Hot 100.

History’s long march.

In 1952 – Elizabeth II becomes Queen of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, as well as other Commonwealth countries following the death of her father King George VI. Elizabeth was in Kenya with her husband Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, at the time and immediately returned home and her coronation would be in June 1953. At 70 years, Elizabeth is the longest-serving British monarch, the planet’s longest currently serving monarch, and the fourth monarch with a verifiable reign to serve at least 70 years.

In 1987 – Dennis Conner, sailing Stars & Stripes 87 wins the America’s Cup defeating Australian defender Kookaburra III, sailed by Iain Murray, off the coast of Freemantle, Australia and taking the series four races to zero. The Australians had earned the Cup in 1993 defeating Connor four races to three off Newport, Rhode Island. It was the third Cup win for Conner, who became the first person to win the America’s Cup after losing it and the series marked the first time it had not been defended by the New York Yacht Club.

In 1981 – Kool & the Gang is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with Celebration. The song also went to #1 in Canada and New Zealand, peaked at #7 in Great Britain, at #1 on Billboard’s soul and dance charts, and was Billboard’s 7th-biggest song of the year. It was the seventh Top 40 hit for the group, remains their only #1 pop hit, and was their fifth of nine #1 soul songs.

The Daily Dose/February 6, 2022
By Gaylon Kent – America’s Funniest Guy™

The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.

1. NFL Racism lawsuit???…Check…Covering up sexist and hostile working conditions???…Check…Game fixing allegations to secure high draft picks???…Check again…Super Bowl halftime performers with rap sheets a mile long???…Oh hell, why bother…A hundred and a half million people are going to watch the Super Bowl anyway…Resistance for most is futile.

2. USA! USA! One ISIS leader, six children, four women among those killed in US attack in Syrian province, an act of war against country US Congress has not declared war on despite pesky Constitutional provision it do so….SB5 pollsters remain “pretty sure” hasn’t declared war since World War II despite US actually being at war every day for past 30 years.

3. Donald Trump The 3-hole staple remains a lying sexual predator who believes that 1) the moon is part of Mars and that 2) the Revolution was won by Continental Army securing British airports, ignorance almost beyond comprehension in anyone older than five…SB5 pollsters still curious as to which of these elements continues to impress adherents and secure their support.

4. 2022 Winter Olympics – SB5 pollsters “strongly suspect” that future Winter Games to be held on Mt Everest as Old Man Winter’s strength continues to fade, threatening to turn Winter Olympics into Spring Flings with a generation or two.

5. Republican Party Good gravy, why is America tolerating their nonsense???…From calling for certain books to be banned in schools to consolidating support for former president who believes Colorado borders Mexico to calling January 6, 2021 insurrection “legitimate political discourse”, SB5 pollsters “strongly suspect” the GOP – once the party of Lincoln – has lost its mind.

History’s long march.

In 1778 – The United States of America is recognized as an independent republic for the first time in two treaties signed in Paris with France. The Treaty of Alliance and the Treaty of Amity and Commerce were meant to annoy and help defeat the British in the American Revolution. The treaties came about after the Americans won the Battle of Saratoga, which also caused the French to turn down British overtures for peace. Amity is a rather archaic word meaning a friendly relationship.

In 1932 – Dog sledding makes its only appearance in the Olympics, a demonstration sport at the Lake Placid Winter Games. Twelve competitors, all from Canada and the US, took part in two races over two days, with Canadian Emile St Goddard earning the gold medal after winning both 50-mile races in a combined time of 4 hours, 23 minutes, and 12.5 seconds. Other demonstration sports at these Games were curling and women’s speed skating.

In 1993 – Whitney Houston establishes a new Billboard Hot 100 record for most weeks at #1 when I Will Always Love You is at the top for the eleventh of 14 consecutive weeks. The song broke the record of ten weeks, done twice, by Debby Boone’s You Light Up My Life (1977) and Olivia Newton-John’s Physical (1981-82). The record was tied the following year by Boyz II Men and is now 19 weeks, done by Old’ Town Road by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus in 2019. The song was also in its tenth of eleven weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart and was Billboard’s biggest song of the year and its 7th-biggest of the decade.

History’s long march.

In 1917 – The Immigration Act of 1917 becomes law when Congress overrides the veto or President Woodrow Wilson, who had vetoed the bill in December. The act provided for a literacy test and prohibited, amongst others, epileptics and contract laborers, from entering the country. The act was modified by the Immigration Act of 1924 and both were further revised in 1952 and eventually replaced by the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965.

In 2017 – The New England Patriots defeat the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in overtime in Super Bowl 51 at NRG Stadium in Houston. The Falcons led 28-3 in the third quarter and the 25-point comeback is the largest in Super Bowl history and the game remains the only Super Bowl to go to overtime. The national anthem was sung by Luke Bryan and Lady Gaga performed the halftime show.

Today – Carolina Gaitán, Mauro Castillo, Adassa, Rhenzy Feliz, Diane Guerrero, Stephanie Beatriz, and the Cast of Encanto are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first week with We Don’t Talk About Bruno. It’s the first chart single for the ensemble – though not the first chart single for some of its members – making the ensemble the 15th act in the Hot 100 era to have their only chart single go to #1, though this could change if a follow-up hits the charts. The song is from the movie Encanto and has also gone to #1 in Ireland and Great Britain and the six credited singers is the most for a #1 song on the Hot 100.

History’s long march.

In 1801 – John Marshall is sworn in as the fourth chief justice of the United States, having been nominated by President John Adams. Marshall’s influence on the court and the country was profound. Through judicial review, Marshall made the judiciary an equal partner in American government and he also started the practice of the court issuing a single opinion instead of one from each justice. Marshall served until his death in 1835 in Philadelphia, with legend holding that the Liberty Bell cracked when rung in his honor.

In 1924 – Jacob Tullin Thams of Norway wins the ski jumping gold medal at the Chamonix Winter Games over Narve Bonna (Norway) and Anders Haugen (US). At the 1936 Berlin Summer Games, Thams would win a silver medal in sailing, making him the second of six athletes to win medals at both the summer and winter Olympics in different events. The bronze medal had originally been awarded to Horlef Haug of Norway until a scoring error was discovered in 1974.

In 1978 – The Bee Gees are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of four consecutive weeks with Stayin’ Alive. The song went to #1 in many other countries, including Italy and Mexico, peaked at #4 in Great Britain, at #4 on Billboard’s soul chart, and was Billboard’s 4th-biggest song of the year. It was the fifth of nine #1 songs for the group and the second of then-record six consecutive, a mark shared with the Beatles and now held by Whitney Houston (7).
