Sparrow and The Wife get some quality time together in the garden on today’s edition of The Diary of a Nobody…Since The Wife has been away a lot lately, it’s their first time in the garden all summer, with The Wife continuing the policy of watering the crap out of everything. Also, Sparrow explains why he is still following the old dress code at the retailer, instead of wearing whatever the hell he wants like is now permitted.

It’s one of the few points that matter in our human experience.

In 1863 – The Battle of Gettysburg in the American Civil War ends after three days when the Confederate Army, under General Robert E Lee, is defeated by Union forces commanded by Major General Winfield Hancock in a battle History refers to as Pickett’s Charge. The battle marked the Confederate Army’s northern-most penetration in the war.

In 1966 – Tony Cloninger of the Atlanta Braves ties a major league record with two grand slam home runs in one game. Cloninger is the first pitcher, the first National League player and the fifth major leaguer to accomplish the feat. Since then, it has been done eight more times, most recently by Josh Willingham of the Washington Nationals in 2009.

In 1961 – Gary US Bonds is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 1oo for the second and final week with his only #1 song Quarter to Three. Bonds would follow that up with three more Top 40 hits through 1962 and while he continued to record after that he would remain off the charts until 1981 when This Little Girl went to #11.

Two new employees at the hotel,  The Wife does some BBQing plus the latest on Sparrow’s cut finger, which he is still milking, await you on today’s edition of The Diary of a Nobody.

I’m giving the slice on my finger some air…Recall a couple of days ago I sliced the top of my left index finger at the retailer and almost bled to death, with only an immediate Band-Aid application keeping me alive…No stitches were required, but it was touch and go there for a while.

One year ago Confucious had The Thought for the Day. The ancient Chinese sage, who flourished several centuries before Christ and whose influence is still profound, talks about going when you are wanted and staying away when you are not.

On This Date: 
In 1776: The United States of America is formed on this date in 1776, when the Second Continental Congress, meeting in Philadelphia, adopts the Lee Resolution, named for Richard Henry Lee of Virginia, who had introduced the resolution on June 7. The Lee Resolution stated, in part: “…That these United Colonies are, and, of right, ought to be, Free and Independent States…”

In 1941: Joe DiMaggio of the New York Yankees hits in his 45th consecutive game, breaking the major league record of 44 established by Wee Willie Keeler of the Baltimore Orioles, then in the National League, in 1897. DiMaggio went 1-5, his only hit a 5th inning home run. DiMaggio would ultimately hit in 56 consecutive games, a record which still stands.

In 1977: Gonna Fly Now (Theme From Rocky) by conductor Bill Conti is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, its only week at the top. The lyrics for the song were written by Carol Connors and Ayn Robbins and were sung by DeEtta West and Nelson Pigford. Despite Conti’s success at scoring movies and TV shows, Gonna Fly Now (Theme From Rocky) is his only Top 40 hit.

It’s official, Sparrow is not going to die from the slicing he suffered Friday at the retailer. Also in today’s edition of The Diary of a Nobody, for the second consecutive year Sparrow and The Wife have baby robins at The Shire, as the latest crop has hatched in the nest by the kitchen door.

The Sunday Bottom Ten is back, with the US Supreme Court’s union ruling, Harley-Davidson and the World Cup occupying this week’s medal stand. There were so many eligible entires that two weekly entries, The Sunday Continental Cup and American Electorate, were given the week off.

One year ago today The Thought for the Day was from a friend of ours named Moussa. Moussa is from Senegal, where Moussa appears to be a fairly common name, and today’s Thought was the result of a conversation we had about dictators in his native Africa, of which there are generally plying their trade at any given time, and Moussa thought perhaps it happened because nobody said no. (Note: a subscription is not required to read The Thought for the Day.)

On This Date:
In 1867 – Canada comes into being with the passage of The British North America Act, 1867. The Act merges the colonies of Canada (now Ontario and Quebec) and New Brunswick and Nova Scotia into one nation. Today, Canada has ten provinces and three territories and this national holiday is known as Dominion Day.

In 1903 – The first Tour de France bicycle race begins with a refreshing 293-mile stage from Paris to Lyon. Even back then doping was a problem, with racers slamming brewskis to help ease the pain of the long stages. Riders rode as individuals back then and not as part of teams and the leader was identified with a green armband instead of the now-familiar yellow jersey. It took 19 days to race six stages and the first Tour de France was won by Frenchman Maurice Garin.

In 1967 – The Association is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of four weeks with Windy. It was the third Top 10 hit for the group and their second #1 after Cherish spent three weeks at #1 the previous year. Despite this early success, the Association would have just two more hits and were off the Top 40 for good by early 1968.

Sparrow, a klutz at heart, cuts himself with a blade at the retailer tonight on the latest edition of The Diary of a Nobody. Later, at the hotel, Sparrow reports for graveyard duty to find Amy left him half a pizza and half of a Stromboli. Both are tasty reheated.

There was not a Thought for the Day one or two years ago today, so pulled one from November of last year, Abraham Lincoln with a line from the Gettysburg Address, and the usual witless commentary by yours truly. While the world might little note what we with our time on this planet, we must build a life that ensures that we will long remember what we’ve done here.

On This Date:
In 1971 – The three-man crew of the Soviet spaceship Soyuz 11 is killed while returning to Earth. The deaths were traced to a breathing ventilation valve that opened when the descent and service modules separated, allowing their air supply to escape. They remain the only humans to have died in space.

In 1984 – The longest game in professional football history is played when the Los Angeles Express defeat the Michigan Panthers 27-21 in three overtimes in the first round of the United States Football League playoffs. The game ended three minutes and 33 seconds into the third overtime on a 24-yard touchdown run by Mel Gray.

In 1951 – Too Young by Nat King Cole is at #1 on Billboard’s Best Sellers In Stores chart – a forerunner of the Hot 100 – for the second of five weeks. Though six songs would spend more weeks at #1, Too Young was on the chart for 29 weeks and was named the biggest song of the year.
