History’s long march.
In 1812 – The steamboat New Orleans arrives in New Orleans via the Mississippi River, the first steam-powered vessel to travel to New Orleans from Pittsburgh. The ship had left on October 20 and had to deal with Indians, a fire onboard and earthquakes but remained unscathed, though the quakes did alter river landmarks, making navigation an ordeal. The New Orleans sank near Baton Rouge in 1814 after running into a group of trees that had fallen in the river.
In 1920 – The Toronto St Patricks and the Montreal Canadiens establish a new NHL record for most goals in a game and Montreal’s Newsy Lalonde becomes the first player to score six goals in a game in a 14-7 Montreal win. The 21 goals broke the record of 20 established by the same teams in December 1917, was tied in December 1985 by the Edmonton Oilers and Chicago Blackhawks and still stands. Lalonde’s mark of six goals was broken three weeks later by Joe Malone of the Quebec Bulldogs who had seven goals against Toronto.
In 1970 – B.J. Thomas is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second of four consecutive weeks with Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head, the first of two #1 songs for Thomas. The song went to #1 in five other countries including Norway, peaked at #38 in Great Britain and was Billboard’s 4th-biggest song of the year. The song was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David for the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.
1. COVID-19 – SB5 pollsters “strongly suspect” that had the US paced the world with an informed, coordinated response COVID would be a minor nuisance now with total US deaths a fraction of current total of 859,046…Partisan, fractured, bickering government and citizens still haven’t produced one, though, so carnage will continue.
2. January 6th Insurrection – Schizoid, fractured and bickering country shows mixed emotions on first anniversary of latest US day of infamy as President Biden remembers it for what it was – an attempt to overthrow a duly-elected government – while GOP accuses Democrats of politicizing event.
3. Donald Trump – Instead of being banished in shame for leading the January 6 insurrection, instead of being reviled for the blood on his hands for an inept coronavirus response, instead of being dismissed for believing the moon is part Mars – and that the Revolution was won by securing British airports – ignorant blatherskite continually heralded as the pacesetter for the 2024 GOP nomination.
4. College Football – Hey guys, pitchers and catchers report here in a couple of weeks so can we get Alabama’s latest national title wrapped up please???…SB5 pollsters remain “pretty sure” a 32-team playoff can begin Thanksgiving weekend and end New Year’s Day and would become an American classic faster than anyone could say “NIL”.

In 1793 – Air travel comes to the United States when Jean-Peter Blanchard of France becomes the first person to fly a balloon in North America. Blanchard took off from the yard of Walnut Street Prison – about where Washington Square is now – and flew several miles southeast to Deptford, New Jersey. In attendance were President George Washington and Vice President John Adams, as were future presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and James Monroe. In 1785 Blanchard had been the first to fly across the English Channel.
In 1977 – The Oakland Raiders defeat the Minnesota Vikings 32-14 in Super Bowl XI at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena. It was the first of three Super Bowl titles for the Raiders and was the fourth and latest Super Bowl loss for the Vikings. The game remains the earliest date for a Super Bowl and the attendance of 103,438 was the largest Super Bowl attendance to date, a total later eclipsed by two following Super Bowls there. The halftime show was produced by Disney and included the introduction of the members of the New Mickey Mouse Club.
In 1982 – AC/DC is at #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart for the third and final consecutive week with For Those About to Rock, We Salute You. It was the seventh chart album for the group, their third to hit the Top 10 and was their first of three #1 albums. The album also went Top 10 in several other countries, including peaking at #2 in Germany and the album produced one Hot 100 entry, Let’s Get It Up which peaked at #44.

Though some, including Warren Beatty, think the song refers to Warren Beatty, Simon has said only the second verse refers to him, and that other men are the subjects of the rest of the song.
