The Diary of a Nobody – At the hotel, Sparrow is in a pitched battle over the angle of the base of the back office phone.
The phone is regularly returned to a low angle after I’ve switched it and, like a lot of goddamned things as yours truly gets older, this is starting to annoy me…I mean, who wants to hear the phone ring, glance to your right and not be able to see the display???…I don’t understand this at all…And it could be anyone at the front desk, too, because everyone uses the back office eventually…

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow passes a snowplow that is holding him up. Today’s Diary.
I don’t understand this at all…Snowplows are big and are already plowing the road for Pete’s sake, so the road under them is clear, so why can’t they floor it???…It makes no sense…

The Diary of a Nobody – A treadmill is broken at the hotel’s gym. Today’s Diary.
Even more big news is a group of kids broke a treadmill in the gym…I am not making that up…I saw the video…There was a group of kids in the gym and evidently, they weren’t playing enuff hockey in the tournament they’re up here for because they had a goal set up in the middle of the gym and were taking shots and, for reasons I’m sure they thought good, had a treadmill going at full speed, tho nobody was on it.
Well, after a bit one of the kids decides to liven up matters by tossing one of those big, rubber yoga balls on the speeding treadmill and when this doesn’t produce the desired level of excitement he kicks it and it hits the bottom of the treadmill and appears to upend it a bit while also shutting it down…The kids – no dummies – scram with enviable speed and I am not entirely certain how it was discovered…Q, tho, advised Brandon knows who did it and the whole matter will be taken up later today.

The Sunday Bottom 5
A ranking of some things.
1. Denny’s– Our first visit in a couple of decades went OK, as hotcakes are still good, but Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters “pretty sure” you could have done better than those molecule-sized butter packets frozen at absolute zero.
2. COVID Relief Bill – Some good, some bad as $1,400 payments about half. or even a third, of what a lot of Americans could use right now…Sunday Bottom 5 pollsters remain “pretty sure” had American citizens, government, produced a united response a year ago, little of this would be necessary.
3. Lauren Daigle – The record for most weeks at #1 on any Billboard chart is extended, as single You Say at top of Hot Christian Singles chart for 120th non-consecutive week….Vienna Boys Choir, looking to cash in with hot Christian singles of their own, looking at adapting Bee Gees Stayin’ Alive in time for Easter resurrection celebrations.
4. Major League Baseball – Announces game will continue to be f*cked with in minor leagues with, among other things, larger bases, requiring pitchers to step off rubber for pickoffs and a limit on the number of pickoffs…Good gravy, why don’t you guys just put up the circus tent???
5. President Joe Biden Fact Check – While nowhere near the level of the Trump Administration, Biden Administration still had some modest fact check successes of its own this week…Click here for the latest from the AP.

The long march to today.
In 1757 – British Royal Navy Admiral John Byng is executed on board the HMS Monarch, following conviction for failing to relieve British troops at the Battle of Minorca, Byng having elected to take his fleet to Gibraltar for repair instead. After King George II refused clemency, Byng was taken to the quarterdeck of the Monarch, allowed to kneel on a pillow, and dropped his handkerchief when he was ready to die. Byng had served in the Royal Navy since 1718, when he was 14.
In 1963 – Guy Rodgers of the San Francisco Warriors ties the NBA record for most assists in a game in a 114-109 loss to the St Louis Hawks. Rodgers had 28 assists to tie the record established by Bob Cousy of the Boston Celtics in February 1959. The record was broken in February 1978 by Kevin Porter of the New Jersey Nets (29) and is now held by Scott Skiles of the Orlando Magic, who had 30 in December 1990.
In 1987 – Huey Lewis and the News is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with Jacob’s Ladder. It was the twelfth of 17 Top 40 hits for the group, their tenth of twelve Top 10 hits and their third and final #1 song. The song was co-written by Bruce Hornsby, but he didn’t like his band’s arrangement and gave the song to Lewis. The song did not reach the Top 10 in any other country and was Billboard’s 41st biggest song of the year.
Some Philosophy Crap
The wisdom of the ages. Whatever.
…there are many who confine themselves to criticism of the way others do what they themselves dare not even attempt…these are marks, not…of superiority but of weakness. They mark the men…who seek…to hide from others and from themselves their own weakness. The role is easy…

The Diary of a Nobody/March 13
It’s Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…
Saturday. March 13
There was a group of hockey parents in the lobby when I reported for duty…They’d been there for a while, too, because they’d already reached the Drunk Philosophy stage of group drinking when I got there…There were beer cans and tequila bottles on the table and none appeared particularly full and as I walked past they started praising Assistant Front Desk Manager Q as if he were part of the Christian triumvirate…Good gravy, it turned out they’d even favored Q with a shot of their tequila, which Q hadn’t downed and even invited me to sniff, something I declined without thanks.

Leading Off
Notes from around the human experience.
USA! USA! The latest COVID relief bill is on the books and by any measure, it’s a monstrous piece of legislation. It received nary a Republican vote.
Pardon Us While We Waffle A Bit: It’s both good and bad.
Leading Off: On the one hand, the government had to do something. America’s response to the coronavirus – both by her government and her citizens – was as fractured as it was insufficient and the economic hardship is too widespread to do nothing. It would be like a mother doing nothing while her kid lies there with a broken leg.
And In This Corner: On the other hand, there are a lot of provisions for widening what is now commonly known as the social safety net. This is dangerous. Deep down, any real Democrat wants to provide cradle-to-grave coverage for every citizen and this is no small step in the direction. It’s akin to a mother taking her kid with the broken leg to the hospital and continuing to baby it long after the leg has healed. Eventually, the kid should be set out on its own again.
Get Your Official Daily Dose Policy Right Here: The best social safety net is an economy anchored in low taxes and free markets, an economy where entrepreneurs can make a satisfactory return on their time and efforts and where workers have the ability to make the living their talents and efforts allow them to make.
The Bottom Line: The Democrats first declared war on poverty in the 1960s and people are still poor because you are always going to have people who are unwilling or unable to take care of themselves. It’s the way the world is built. The latest COVID relief bill contains some necessary aid but boy, we must be careful. Making even more people dependent on the government is not what this country is about.

The Diary of a Nobody – Sparrow’s back at The Shire, but can’t be bothered to clean house. Today’s Diary.
The cabin is still in need of a Level II cleaning and if ol’ Sparrow doesn’t perform a Level II cleaning anytime soon it might soon require professional help…

The long march to today.
In 1988 – The Seikan Tunnel, the largest undersea tunnel in the world, opens in northern Japan. The tunnel connects the islands of Honshu and Hokkaido and the train track is about 330 feet below the seabed. At 33.4 miles long, the tunnel is two miles longer than the Channel Tunnel, though its actual undersea segment of 14.5 miles is less than that of the Channel Tunnel’s 23.5-mile undersea segment. Construction had begun in 1971.
In 1960 – The Chicago Cardinals are granted permission by the NFL to move to St Louis. The Cardinals are the oldest professional football team in the US, tracking their roots back to the Racine Cardinals of 1919 and they joined what would become the NFL the following years. They moved to Phoenix in 1988 and today are the Arizona Cardinals. On Nov 25, 1923, the Cardinals became the only team in NFL history to score four points in a game, a 10-4 loss to the Racine Legion.
In 1971 – The Osmonds are at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the fifth and final week with One Bad Apple. It was the second of ten Top 40 hits for the group, their first of four Top 10 hits and remains their only #1 song. The song also peaked at #1 in Canada, at #6 on Billboard’s soul chart and was Billboard’s 4th-biggest song of the year. From 1982-86 the Osmonds placed seven songs on Billboard’s country chart.
