Notes from around the human experience.

USA! USA!: President Trump, of course, says a lot of things that aren’t true, turning fact-checking from a cottage industry into a full-blown career path. So the following quote concerning his administration’s handling of the coronavirus is hardly news, merely continued witless blathering:

We’ve made every decision correctly. We may have some embers or ashes or we may have some flames coming, but we’ll put them out. We’ll stomp them out…We understand the disease now.

Dry, Technical Matter: We’ve long wondered whether Trump is a genuine liar, meaning he knows better but is saying otherwise, or whether he is merely delusional, living in his own fantasy world and choosing to share it with us. It doesn’t really matter, though. What matters, as we’ve discussed here before, is that we are taking it. Trump’s falsehoods are seldom accompanied by a headline saying our president is out to lunch. I appreciate having due regard for the presidency, but Trump has little regard for anybody but himself and – as we’ve noted here before – it’s time to call an orange an orange  Trump is a liar. He governs, lives, off the top of his head. His only real talent is drawing attention to himself. He is not reframing the narrative, he is destroying our country.

Oh, Jesus H, Here We Go: The media is as much to blame as anyone else. A real media would have had the blustering billionaire with no credentials out of the race shortly after he announced his candidacy. But Candidate Trump meant ratings and clicks, so the media ushered him straight through to the primaries and then the White House. An America that is dying, both literally and figuratively, is the harvest we are reaping right now. They’re still enabling him, too, treating him as legitimate news, instead of as a witless rambler.

The Bottom Line: America’s response to the coronavirus was delayed and remains incompetent. This administration understands nothing except lies, insults and dissension. America is irrelevant now, at the midpoint between the esteem and influence we once held and the oblivion that awaits us.

The Diary of a Nobody: The new restaurant still hasn’t opened. Today’s Diary.

No news to report on the new restaurant they appear to be working on across from the post office…Not only that, nobody has any rumors about it, either…There are some at the county building that live in Hayden, but none of them know anything, either…The local paper has been no help, either, but their busy doing features on their few remaining advertisers that are still in business…

Backstairs at the Monte Carlo: Nobody really knows what in the hell is going on.

I was walking with Shana in front of the cage when we get word there is a fight in front of the cage.

This is news to me. I am standing in front of the cage and don’t see anything, except for a couple of guests cashing in their chips. Ted, watching from dispatch, also wonders what all the fuss is about and I tell him everything is code four and he says OK…

History’s long march to today

In 1805 – An advance scout team from the Lewis and Clark Expedition, consisting of Meriwether Lewis and four others, become the first whites to see the Great Falls of the Missouri River. The Great Falls consist of five falls along a ten-mile stretch located in central Montana. The falls were not navigable, forcing the expedition to portage past them, a difficult task that took them about a month. Today four of the five falls are damned, with only Crooked Falls still existing in its natural state. The Expedition would reach the Pacific Ocean on November 15 and would return to their starting point of St Louis on Sept. 23, 1806.

In 1993 – Kevin Johnson of the Phoenix Suns established a new NBA Finals record for minutes played in a 129-121 triple-overtime win over the Chicago Bulls in Game 3. Johnson played 62 of the game’s 63 minutes, which tied Game 5 of the 1976 NBA Finals (Boston 128, Phoenix 126) for the longest game in Finals history. The win was the first of the series for the Suns, which was won by Chicago in six games. Johnson played the first 62 minutes of the game, only coming out in the final minute of the third overtime and the record still stands.

In 1970 – The Beatles are at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with The Long Winding Road. The song leaped to the top from #10 and was in its fourth of ten weeks on the Hot 100 and it was the 20th and final #1 song for the group, a Billboard Hot 100 record that still stands. The song also went to #1 in Canada and was not released as a single in Great Britain. The song has been covered many times, but only one hit a Billboard chart, Billy Ocean’s 1985 version which peaked at #24 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

The Diary of a Nobody/June 12

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Friday, June 12
The big fiasco in our small town right now concerns mosquitos…There’s no small number of them, what with the river nearby, not to mention the attendant streams, ditches and irrigated fields you find in farm and ranch areas…To help mitigate matters, our small town has, for years, paid for aerial spraying…That stopped this week because the spraying company backed out of the contract because someone – one person, evidently – called and whined that their pesticide caused cancer.

The intrepid Monte Carlo Security Department bravely hooked up two hookers tonight. We don’t usually arrest hookers, preferring to chase them out, but they started acting like tyrants, obliging us to lay the hammer down.

The Diary of a Nobody: It’s a busy day at The Shire with Sparrow, among other things, cleaning house and mowing the lawn. Plus the robins have hatched. Today’s Diary.

Then I went to the retailer, where I completely lost my mind and bought some healthy stuff, like carrots and green stuff for juicing and more kombucha, because I’ve been out of the habit for a couple of weeks..I’ve been eating like a pig lately and my walks have been less frequent and I am not happy with myself…I celebrated my new healthy lifestyle by having lunch at the Mexican joint.

Backstairs at the Monte Carlo: Gaylon and Jose walk in on a couple getting busy.

“Jose, they’re doing it,” I said as I exited the room, rubbing my forehead as if I had one of those tension headaches you used to see in a TV commercial years ago.

“Really!” Jose said, not without a high level of enthusiasm. Not under the same moral restraints as me, he barges in and, after taking a thorough amount of time to assess – as a security professional, of course – the situation, breaks up the party and informs the couple they have to turn their music down.

History’s long march to today.

In 1963 – Medgar Evers, a civil right activist, is murdered, shot to death after getting out of his car outside his home in Jackson, Mississippi. Byron de la Beckwith was arrested for the murder later in the month, was tried twice in 1964 with both trials resulting in deadlocked juries. He was convicted of Evers’ murder in 1994, sentenced to life in prison and died in prison in 2001. A veteran of the United States Army who served in World War II, Evers is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

In 1880 – Lee Richmond of the Worcester National League team – they did not have a regular nickname – pitches the first perfect game in major league history, a 1-0 win over the Cleveland Blues. Richmond was in his second major league season and as was the custom of the era, started most of his team’s games, finishing the year with a 32-32 record. His career record was 75-100 and he batted .257 in his six seasons in which he also played 90 games in the outfield. To date, there have been 23 perfect games in the major leagues. No one has thrown two, though Ron Hassey has caught two and Ted Barrett has been the plate umpire for two.

In 1971 – The Honey Cone is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the only week with Want Ads. The song was also in its second of three non-consecutive weeks at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart and was Billboard’s 13th biggest song of the year. It was the third chart single for the group, their first Top 40 hit and remains their only Top 10 and #1 song. The group’s follow-up single, Stick-Up, also went to #1 on the soul chart and peaked at #11 on the Hot 100.

The Diary of a Nobody/June 11

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Thursday, June 11
A good, busy day today, as I put in some time tending to The Shire.

After morning project work was done, I dove into the new chair for some reading, usual for Thursday morning, but I had a gnawing feeling this wasn’t what I should be doing with my time right now…I should be mowing the lawn, but it still wasn’t even 0600 so I made myself useful cleaning the bathroom and the kitchen.

The Diary of a Nobody: It turns out Sparrow got a deal on his new shades. Today’s Diary.

I also did some research on the sunglasses I got at Tuesday’s gathering…Recall they had been left at Kevin and Melissa’s house and they looked pretty sharp, so I threw a few bucks into the kitty and claimed them…I was curious because while I’m hardly Mr Shades but on the drive home it was apparent to even a square like me that they were quality gear and my research showed a pair usually retails for over $200, so I got a pretty good deal while some loser is being blinded on the roads now.

Backstairs at the Monte Carlo: Gaylon and Lee are sent on a mission in the hotel.

This is an official mission and the time element is key so I get right to the point. I tell him the previous guest left his beeper in the safe when he evacuated the room and we are tasked with recovering the beeper, which probably has nuclear codes or something on it. Lee nods significantly.

“It’s a good thing we have master keys,” he said. “It’ll make it easier to open the door.”

History’s long march to today

In 1776 – The Second Continental Congress of the United Colonies appoints John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Robert Livingston and Roger Sherman to produce a statement announcing the colonies’ reasons for withdrawing from the British Empire. Known to History as the Committee of Five, they assigned the first draft of what would become the Declaration of Independence to Jefferson who fretted over both its writing and editing by the Committee and the Congress. America’s national holiday may well have ended up July 3, but the Congress deferred the matter until the following day because of the late hour.

In 1950 – Ben Hogan, 16 months removed from being seriously injured in a major car wreck, wins the US Open at Merion Golf Club near Philadelphia. Hogan won in a playoff, shooting a 69 to win by four strokes over Lloyd Mangrum and six strokes over George Fazio. It was Hogan’s second of four US Open titles and his fourth of nine major championships. Lee Mackey shot a 64 in the first round, a single-round US Open record that stood until broken in 1973 by Johnny Miller with a 63 in the final round, a record that has been tied and still stands. Hogan won $4,000, about $42,000 in today’s money.

In 1977 – KC and the Sunshine Band is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with I’m Your Boogie Man. The song also peaked at #3 on Billboard’s soul chart, went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #41 in Great Britain and was Billboard’s eleventh biggest song of the year. It was the fourth of five #1 songs for the group and the fourth of seven Top 10 hits. In 1996 the song was covered by the American band White Zombie, which didn’t chart but did earn them a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance.

The Diary of a Nobody/June 10

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Wednesday, June 10
Boy, today got off to a lousy start, with less than three hours of sleep (see Sleep Log below).

I do not sleep well away from home…Recall on New Year’s Night I was in the big city and dinner and a couple of drinks (pretty good Scotch) and got three hours of sleep despite needing/wanting more and ended up heading home at oh-dark-thirty…I blamed the booze and wrote it off as a concession to old age…Big wow…I seldom drink and can take booze or leave it…It’s not all that important, like the Mexican joint in the next county is important…However, now I’m wondering if I simply am so spoiled that I merely dislike being away from The Shire and that I am not going to sleep well whether or not I enjoy a cocktail or not…I’m thinking of field testing this, but it’s hardly important enuff to worry about.

Backstairs at the Monte Carlo/August 25

August 25
Here was your Henry lineup for last night:

Henry 1 – moi
Henry 2 – Lee
Henry 3 – Orwad

Lee and I were assigned an actual mission tonight, the first hotel mission in recent memory. Appropriately, it was all very covert at the beginning. I was actually on another call, a guest assist, when the deal started going down.

– Control, Henry 1
– Henry 1, 10-6 (busy), guest assist.
– Copy. When you’re 98 (available for assignment), 85 (go to) to the 21st E-Core and give me a 21, code four.

All right. It certainly is intriguing getting sent to the insertion point and being told to call for further instructions. Immediately after issuing me my instructions, Junior gets on the horn with Lee.

– Control, Henry 2.
– Henry 2, 10-6 with Henry 3.

Lee was helping Orwad with a lost property report because Orwad was unable to handle getting the required information – difficult stuff like a description, when it was last seen and its value – on his own and needed backup.

– Copy that. Henry 2, break away and 85 to 21-302. You are going to help Henry 1 with a mission.

This transmission is key; it makes clear we are on an actual mission and not just some run of the mill guest assist or some crap like that. The chips are down and MCSD is sending their top hotel units in. Also, it establishes that I’m on the point. Lee is under my command for the mission. This means that if Lee buys the farm I will be responsible for the paperwork, though probably not next-of-kin notification.

I get to the 21st floor and call Junior for the details. We are to infiltrate the room, find the safe, and extricate a beeper the previous guest had left behind.

Exactly how we are to enter the room and open the safe is left to us.

Lee arrives soon after I hang up the phone.

Typical Lee; always thinking, always analyzing, always two steps ahead of the game.

“Junior also gave me the combination to the safe, so we don’t have to blow it open,” I said.

Lee laughs. He’s at the door and volunteers to be the first one in.

This is a tough one. I’m in command and should probably be on the point here, but the latest Intel from HQ had the room vacant and I don’t really see any problems with letting Lee go first; the experience will serve him well.

The room is actually a Monaco Suite; the plan, after initial entry, is for Lee to secure the half bath that is immediately to the left of the door while yours truly fans out and secures the main living area. Once these key areas are secured, we’ll then turn our attention to the master bath. On entry, we both have our flashlights drawn.

The only problem was we couldn’t find the goddamn safe!

It wasn’t in the half-bath or in the main living area and we didn’t find it in the master bath, either, even though that’s where it was, because we lacked the investigative skill to notice it behind the door. We stood there wondering where the hell it could be.

“Are these people on crack?” Lee wondered. “Who the hell designed this place?”

Then I almost compromised the entire mission when, in total desperation, I inadvertently pulled the iron and ironing board off the wall in the hall closet, probably waking up the entire floor. Scrambling, we finally find the safe, in the master bath where it had been patiently waiting the whole time. Using the combination given to me by Junior, I open the safe, Lee removes the beeper and we goof off in the suite for a while before radioing dispatch the mission had been successfully completed.

The Daily Dose/June 10, 2020
By Gaylon Kent
America’s Funniest Guy

Friends, your Heavyweight Champion of the World, your Daily Dose, has the day off.

Read Free Week at The Diary of a Nobody and Backstairs at the Monte Carlo rolls on, though. Enjoy, and stand by for a special to take advantage of because Read Free Week will not last forever, it only seems like it.

The Diary of a Nobody: Sparrow gets off a funny line at the hotel, he heads to the big city and he has the latest MPG figures for the new ride. Today’s Diary.

Even the big city is mocking me now at the gas pump, as I was teased with getting this close to the magic 40 MPG mark for the new ride for the third consecutive week…Maybe I should take th 40-pound sack of birdseed out and actually start feeding it to the birds…We are close enuff to 40 MPG that the extra weight might make the difference.

Backstairs at the Monte Carlo: Gaylon and Special Ed respond to a drug call in the hotel.

And this is where you wonder what may be on the other side of the door. It’s a very fleeting thought, because Monte Carlo is a classy joint, not some housing project, but you never really know if some Colombians are lying in wait for you until you open the door.

As it was, the room was empty. Visual inspection revealed nothing more lethal than mouthwash and I reported this to dispatch and Ed and I left.

Enjoy, and thank you for reading,

Gaylon
