Notes from around the human experience…

HERE WE GO AGAIN: One of the delights of the Trump Administration is its consistency. I mean we knew going into Tuesday’s State of the Union address that there would be nothing of any particular substance because President Trump governs, lives, off the top of his head. He has never had a substantive, long term plan for our country so there was no reason for him to start now.

We also knew – knew! – the speech would be chock full of the exaggerations, half-truths and outright falsehoods that Trump has been issuing since he left the womb. He is a man who has never bothered to get his facts straight.

Editor’s Note: Click here for a detailed fact check of the president’s State of the Union speech by the Associated Press. Click here for one by The New York Times.

Dry, Technical Matter: Starting with the second President Bush we’ve taken to reading presidential speeches because they are tedious to listen to. Reading Tuesday’s speech was like reading some notes scribbled by a kid running for class council: breezy, scattered, all over the place, lot’s of bragging and some name-calling, but nothing of substance, hardly a bulletin because President Trump is not a substantive man. He’s a man whose only real talent is drawing attention to himself.

Leading Off: President Trump – President Trump! – wasted no time, either. Our favorite lie came in the second paragraph:

…our country is thriving and highly respected again!

Fly In The Ointment: No, it is not. Our country is a mess. We’ve been at war every day for over 30 years, our finances are a shambles and our nation is a shooting gallery. There is nothing thriving nor respectable about America right now.

LOL: This came late in the speech:

This is the place where greatness is born, where destinies are forged, and where legends come to life.

More Fly In The Ointment: Again, no, it’s not. It used to be, but this is not an accurate description of America anymore. America is now nothing more than a partisan, fractured and bickering mess governed by a partisan, fractured and bickering mess.

This Isn’t A Plug For Your US Senate Candidacy, Is It?: We deserve better than this, of course, but we are not demanding it right now, we are tolerating it. We have nobody to blame but ourselves. We elected all of it.

The Diary of a Nobody: Sparrow notes there is no longer any music at all playing in the lobby. Today’s Diary.

Someone, probably Front Desk Manager Brandon, decided to stop fighting the Christmas music battle and now no music is playing in the lobby at all…Recall Brandon said we were waiting for a CD to be sent, a circumstance I seem to remember from working at the timeshare…Apparently hotel lobby music is shipped via camel over the Aleutian land bridge because they are always taking forever to get here…

Great moments in us.

In 1971 – Apollo 14 lands on the moon, the sixth manned mission there and the third to land. Commander Alan Shepard and astronaut Edgar Mitchell spent a total of 9 hours and 22 minutes walking on the moon, then a record. Their launch had been delayed four months after modifications to their spacecraft were made following the in-flight explosion on Apollo 13. The mission would return to Earth on Feb 9 and is widely remembered for Shephard hitting two golf balls with a makeshift club he brought with him.

In 1994 – Peter Bondra of the Washington Capitals establishes a new NHL record for the fastest time scoring four goals, getting them in 4 minutes and 16 seconds of the first period in a 6-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Bondra added a second-period goal and finished with five points on the night and research into whose record Bondra broke was inconclusive. The four goals also tied the NHL record for most goals in a period, accomplished many times, a record that still stands.

In 1972 – American Pie by Don McLean is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the fourth and final consecutive week. It was the first of six Top 40 hits for McLean and remains his only #1 song. American Pie also went to #1 in South Africa, Canada and New Zealand, spent three weeks at #2 in Great Britain, was Billboard’s third-biggest song of the year and ranked 210th on their 60th-anniversary chart in 2018. The song returned to the Hot 100 in 2000 when Madonna took it to #29 in the US and her version also went to #1 in 13 other countries.

Answer To The Last Trivia Question
It’s not who you know, but what you know.

The only song in Hot 100 history that went to #1 in its second chart run after going to #1 in its first chart run was The Twist by Chubby Checker, which went to #1 in both 1960 and 1962.

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Tuesday, February 4
Q’s big turnover item when I reported for duty concerned 248…Seems he reported the power was out in his bathroom, Maintenance was unable to get it back up and he declined Q’s offer of another room, a suite upgrade in fact…Q also said he was still not happy when Q issued him a discount for the night, implying he’d be pestering us for another one.

The Diary of a Nobody: Sparrow finds out there is going to be a planned power outage in his small town on Tuesday. Today’s Diary.

I messaged the power company to ask WTF but they’re a small-town utility so their help desk is only open for five minutes every other Wednesday so I haven’t heard back yet.

Great moments in us.

In 1789 – George Washington is elected president of the United States in voting conducted by the Electoral College in ten of the eleven states that had ratified the US Constitution. (New York had also ratified the Constitution, but internal squabbling prevented their electoral votes from being cast. North Carolina and Rhode Island had yet to ratify it.) Washington was named on all 69 ballots, the only president unanimously elected. The votes would be certified by the new Congress in April, with John Adams being elected vice president. Washington would be inaugurated on April 30 and served two terms, replaced by Adams in 1797.

In 1987 – The Sacramento Kings establish a new NBA record for fewest points in the first quarter, scoring four points in a 128-92 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers. The Kings broke the record of five points that had been done on four previous occasions and the total also tied the NBA record for fewest points in any quarter (Buffalo, Oct 1972). The record for fewest first-quarter points is now three (Denver, Nov 2002) and the overall record for fewest points in a quarter is now 2 (Golden State, Feb 2004, Dallas, Apr 1997).

In 1989 – Sheriff is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for their only week with When I’m With You. The song had previously reached #61 on the Hot 100 in 1983 and while research into the matter was inconclusive, When I’m With You is one of the few songs to hit #1 in its second chart run. Sheriff, disappointed at their lack of commercial success, had actually broken up a few years earlier. The band declined to reunite – two members eventually formed the group Alias – and When I’m With You remains their only Top 40 hit.

The Diary of a Nobody/February 3

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Monday, February 3
About 0600 a lady with an eastern European accent and wearing a coffee shop uniform wondering where her car was…She reported it wasn’t where she’d left it and asked if we’d towed it…Regular readers of this crap know we would never do something like that…As I’ve noted here before, I’ve worked hotels a lot over the years and I have yet to see one tow a car…Let me tell you something, one, we don’t want the hassle of having it towed and two, we don’t want to risk offending a guest…You could park in the lobby and we wouldn’t do anything…I told the woman we hadn’t towed anyone so she went out to look again and she didn’t come back so I’m presuming she either found her car or she found me so hopeless to deal with she took the bus to work.

The Diary of a Nobody/February 2

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Sunday, February 2
Boy, Q was on the rag tonight when I reported for duty at the hotel…He was not pleased with assorted co-workers in a variety of departments, including our two immediate supervisors, Assistant Front Desk Manager Devani and Front Desk Manager Brandon…Details include Devani not hustling up reward club memberships like he thinks she should (Q easily leads the league and because we get 500 reward club points for each signup, he has almost 200,000 reward club points…Ol’ Sparrow has zero) and Brandon not juggling his numerous responsibilities to his satisfaction…He’s also not pleased with a couple of the bartenders because they’re not serving him multiple drinks anymore after his shift and childishly declined to take his dinner dishes back to the restaurant because he’d’ve been obliged to run into them…The dishes stayed on top of the microwave in the back office, too, because I don’t clean up after coworkers.

The Diary of a Nobody/February 1

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Saturday, February 1
Both cash drawers at the hotel are stocked with new bills, both $1s and $5s…These are a pain in the neck and no one who handles cash likes them…They’re slippery and hard to count because they keep getting stuck together…Fortunately, most were paperclipped into stacks ($100 for fives and $25 for ones) so ol’ Sparrow got off pretty easy.

Notes from around the human experience…

DRY, TECHNICAL MATTER: From time to time we’ll make notes at the top of the doc we write this feature on for later use. This shouldn’t be news because we often comment on items a day or two after they happen, the better to make fun of them, and at our age if we don’t make notes we might well forget.

RIP: One of our recent notes concerned Kobe Bryant who, of course, died this past Sunday in a helicopter crash, so we put off using the item, which concerned some comments he made about women playing in the NBA. But we found ourselves in desperate need of material today and enough time has passed so writing about Bryant would not be disrespectful.

In the article, Bryant said he believed there were three women he believed could play in the NBA right now and it should be noted Bryant’s daughter Gianna, who died with him, was a very good high school player and Bryant may well have been indulging in some deserved, indirect bragging.

With all deference due Bryant’s basketball acumen, doubtless greater than ours, we don’t think this is true. One, if there were women who were good enough to play in the NBA they’d be playing in the NBA right now. The NBA wouldn’t miss out on that license to print money.

Fly In The Ointment: Two, men are bigger and stronger and faster than women. It’s the way the world is built and to expect women to compete with men in professional basketball is not particularly reasonable. Longtime readers of this feature may recall some research we did into the battle of the sexes a few years ago, checking to see where the NCAA Division I women’s 100-meter champion would rank with the men. As it turned out, the time of the major division women’s division would have qualified her for the finals of the men’s Division III race, though her time would not have gotten her on the medal stand.

Guys Rule: Just for funsies, we checked the numbers from last year’s NCAA track and field championships, in case women have made any startling advances in physiology but they hadn’t. In fact, the women’s major division winning time of 10.75 seconds would not have made it out of the men’s Division III heats.

The Diary of a Nobody: Sparrow has trouble finding his wallet. Today’s Diary.

The big news is it took 15 minutes to find my wallet this morning…It wasn’t in Pa Sparrow’s old valet where it usually is but this really isn’t that big a deal because invariably it shows up in the back pocket of the last pair of pants I wore…Unfortunately, those pants – the quilted blue jeans – were in the dryer…Crap…I checked both the washer and the dryer, tho, and no wallet…Double crap…I checked the bedroom, around the hamper and it wasn’t there…I checked the kitchen around the washer and dryer and found nothing…Well, that isn’t true…I found several things, none of which were my wallet…Back to the desk…More nothing…Then I wasted time checking places there was no place it could be, like the trash and my backpack before grabbing a flashlight and finding it on the far side of the washer…I’d looked there but apparently I’m blind now without a spotlight…I was glad to find it…Sure, it would’ve been a pain to get a new driver’s license and debit cards, but I’d blown $60 on the wallet and I’m grateful I don’t have to buy a new one.

Great moments in us.

In 1968 – One History’s most iconic photos is taken when Associated Press photographer Eddie Adams captures the shooting of Nguyễn Văn Lém by South Vietnamese National Police Chief Nguyễn Ngọc Loan. The incident occurred on a Saigon street at the start of the Tet Offensive and Loan would later say he was angry at a Viet Cong officer wearing civilian clothes. The photograph won Adams the Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography.

In 2015 – The New England Patriots defeat the Seattle Seahawks 28-24 in Super Bowl XLIX in Phoenix. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady established Super Bowl records with 37 completions and 13 touchdown passes in a Super Bowl career. The Patriots tied the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers NFL record with their eighth Super Bowl appearance, a mark they have since extended to 11.

In 1975 – Neil Sedaka is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the only week with Laughter in the Rain. It was Sedaka’s second and final #1 song and first since 1962’s Breaking Up is Hard To Do, a figure that does not include an uncredited background vocal performance on Elton John’s 1975 #1 hit Bad Blood. The song also went to #1 in Canada, peaked at #15 in Great Britain and was Billboard’s 8th biggest song of the year. Laughter in the Rain was the third of a Hot 100 record twelve consecutive #1 songs that spent one week at the top.

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Friday, January 31
Sickies…Regular readers of this crap know I don’t get sickies too often and when I do it usually lasts about a week-and-a-half or so: three days coming, three days here and three days departing…Right now it’s just a scratchy throat and some sneezing.
