The Diary of a Nobody/August 1

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Thursday, August 1
Boy, I had a really good workout today…This close to champion training…It was my first regular workout in a week or so…Recall I slept thru Tuesday’s session and while I was in the gym on Saturday and Sunday, I only had the time/interest in short workouts.

Not today…I was strong and focused the whole way and I even upped the bench press 20 pounds total…I am now up to 180 total, hardly the 220 I was able to move years ago, but still not too bad…I only was able to move it eight times, but as we’ve noted here before, that’s pretty good and we’ll take that…The squats were good, too, 40 squats after each superset which is not only good for your legs, it’s good cardio, too, contributing to an hour of your heart going at a pretty good clip.

The Daily Dose/August 1, 2019

Notes from around our human experience…

HERE WE GO AGAIN: They’re not really news anymore, our mass shootings. The root of the word ‘news’ is ‘new’ and, of course, there is nothing particularly new about someone in America shooting up assembled people and killing them. Shock was long ago replaced with a shrug and some thoughts and prayers while noting how many died and where they died. Hashtags featuring the city’s name followed by ‘strong’ appear.

Dry, Technical Matter: There were two more shootings in America this week. On Sunday a lone gunman with unknown motives shot and killed two children and an adult in Gilroy, California. Twelve others were injured and seven remain hospitalized. The shooter was killed by police. On Tuesday a disgruntled Walmart employee shot and killed two and injured two others. He, too, was shot by police, but survived.

More Dry, Technical Matter: America remains a shooting gallery unprecedented in human history. Our national conversation on the Second Amendment is now a murmur. Sure, after each shooting the usual people say the usual things, and there are some calls for gun laws that criminals will never follow, but the large-scale arm-waving has left the American landscape. Us Americans have come to accept the wholesale slaughter of our fellow citizens.

Can We Talk? We can bicker about the Second Amendment all day, but this ignores the real point:

We have violent American citizens because we have a violent American government.

Violent homes produce violent kids and a country and her citizens are no different. America has been at war every day for the past 30 years and we are reaping that harvest right now with every mass killing. We have borne a generation-and-a-half of Americans who have never known their country at peace. Violence has long been America’s calling card and it is now the calling card of America’s citizens.

Gaylon For US Senate…Vote Early, Vote Often: It is not going to get any better, either, until we have an American government at peace and we are not going to have a peaceful American government until you and me – we the people – start demanding it at the ballot box on Election Day. Reelecting the status quo will solve nothing because if the status quo wanted an America at peace we’d have an America at peace. You know it, I know it, and the status quo knows it, too.

FunFact: No country has survived perpetual warfare and to think America will be the exception to that is as false as it is dangerous. Eventually, perpetual war – and our mindless spending – will destroy our country, with America eventually tossed aside the scrap heap of history, perhaps before this half-century is out.

Final Answer: The only dividend war provides is more war. We deserve better. Our planet and our country are entitled to see the dividends produced by an America at peace.

The Diary of a NobodySparrow laments the disappearance of Choco-Tacos from the sundry stand. Today’s Diary.

I think we might be out of Choco-Tacos for a while, maybe permanently…That new iced lemon bread appears to be moving pretty well, why I don’t know, it sucks compared to a Choco-Taco – I’ve tried both, of course, as a courtesy to our guests – but shelf space in the sundry stand’s small freezer is limited and we’re here to move product, dammit, bottom line…If Choco-Tacos aren’t selling as well as some lousy iced lemon bread, well, you know, the sundry racket can be tuff at times.

In 2007 – A bridge spanning the Mississippi River in Minneapolis collapses during evening rush hour. 13 people are killed and 145 are injured. A government investigation showed that steel gusset plates were undersized and unable to hold the intended load of the bridge. The plates were .5 inches thick and matters weren’t helped by an extra two inches of cement that had been added to the bridge over the years. A replacement bridge opened 13 months later.

In 1924 – Dazzy Vance of the Brooklyn Robins, later the Dodgers, establishes a new major league record by striking out seven consecutive batters as the Dodgers defeated the Chicago Cubs 4-0. Vance’s streak started with a strikeout of Gabby Hartnett to end the first inning and ended with a walk to Charlie Hollacher to start the fourth inning. Vance went the distance, striking out 14 and giving up three hits. The record is now 10 consecutive batters, done by Tom Seaver in 1970.

In 1981 – Rick Springfield is at #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100 for the first of two consecutive weeks with Jessie’s Girl. It was Springfield’s second of 15 Top 40 hits and remains his only #1 song. The song also went to #1 in his native Australia, was Billboard’s 5th biggest song of the year and ranked 186th on Billboard’s Hot 100 60th anniversary chart in 2018. The song also earned Springfield a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.

The Diary of a Nobody/July 31

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Wednesday, July 31
Early on a kid and his sister came by needing a key for their room…Not completely unadorably, he asked if there was a charge for a new key…He asked it in such a way that I knew the classic Sparrow smarty-pants answer might well cause him to weep, so I played straight man and said no, but as I made the key I saw his room already had the max number of keys made…I told him this and said I’d make him four new keys which would replace the ones his family now had…This seemed to confuse him, so when I handed him the new keys I said he was in charge of making sure his family got the new keys and to bring the old ones back to the front desk and for Pete’s sake take care not to mix them up…Being put in charge of key distribution seemed to give the kid some confidence, tho he never did come back and return the old ones.

By Gaylon Kent
America’s Funniest Guy

Leading Off
Notes from around our human experience…

USA! USA! The best part of the upcoming election is all of us have been nicely fitted into one of two slots: we are either racists or we are socialists. There is no middle ground. 231 years after our first presidential election the Great American Experiment has been reduced to the basest level of partisan squabbling and bickering though it should be noted these have been features of every presidential election that has not had George Washington on the ballot.

Hold On To Your Hats: The Republicans are led by a lying, racist, sexual predator who believes the moon is part of Mars, a president who so fans racism’s flames he has grand wizards from Charleston to Biloxi achieving states of arousal not seen in decades. For their part, the Democrats are led by no one in particular at a time when they desperately need someone taking charge. Every one of the 532 candidates for their presidential nomination is promising us something free, be it medical care or college.

FunFact: No one in either party, at least no one anyone is listening to, is talking about ending our non-stop wars or our mindless spending.

Dry, Technical, Matter: Friends, we can’t sustain this forever. Write this down:

A divided America, perpetually at war and mindlessly in debt, will eventually collapse, tossed aside the scrap heap of history, perhaps before this half-century out.

Get Your Official Daily Dose Policy Right Here: There is only one question in 2020: Will America continue to tolerate the substandard government offered by the status quo, or will America demand a change? Will America continue to tolerate a status quo that only offers us partisan, fractured and bickering government, or will America demand better?

More Official Daily Dose Policy: We deserve better than what our government is giving us now. We deserve an America at peace with the world and herself. We deserve an America that both Americans and the world can be proud of again.

To continue to tolerate the status quo merely drives another nail into the American coffin.

We cannot continue this insanity with impunity. Eventually, it will destroy our country.

It’s time for you and me – we the people – to become the status quo again.

In 1971 – Man drives on another heavenly body for the first time, when Dave Scott, commander of Apollo 15, drives a battery-powered vehicle on the moon. The rovers could carry both astronauts, plus equipment and samples, though their range was limited to a distance that would allow astronauts to walk back to the lunar module. The rovers had a top speed of 11 mph and all three were left behind on the moon.

In 1897 – John Grimes of the St Louis Browns ties the major league record by hitting six batters in an 11-6 loss to the Louisville Colonels in the first game of a doubleheader. It was the second of his three major league appearances for Grimes, whose final game came on August 2, a 9-5 loss to the Chicago Colts, now known as the Cubs. Though History is not entirely clear on the matter, Grimes, 28 at the time, might well have been on leave from what would turn out to be a 30-year career in the US Army, where he retired as a captain after seeing action in both the Spanish-American and First World wars. Grimes tied the record established by Ed Knouff of the Baltimore Orioles of the American Association in 1887. – Editor’s note: this entry was amended after original publication to reflect the following: Grimes tied and did not establish the record; it was the first game of a doubleheader, which we knew but forgot to put in; Ed Knouff established the original record.

In 1971 – Jean Knight is at #1 on Billboard’s soul chart – then known as the Best Selling Soul Singles chart – for the fifth and final week with Mr. Big Stuff. The song also peaked at #2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 and remains Knight’s biggest hit on both charts. Knight had begun singing in the mid-60s, but disappointed at her lack of success, actually quit and took a job as a baker in the cafeteria of a New Orleans university before landing a record deal.

The Diary of a Nobody/July 30

Meet Sparrow, an average man passing an average life…

Tuesday, July 30
Boy, Mark was in ill-humor when I reported for duty…First, he was annoyed because he was obliged to do some research because some guests who did not have charging privileges had signed their room number to their bills in the restaurant…Some research when I was doing the billing showed these rooms were from a tour group in house, so the tour was paying for their rooms and the guests did not have a credit card on file for incidentals…We could have, I suppose, gone and knocked on doors and requestemanded payment, but we’re pretty chill here, the theory being our guests are not convicts and will settle up in the morning.

Mark was also peeved because the key he took to go and unlock the rooms with rollaways in them didn’t work, plus he was extra-peeved the roll-a-ways don’t have wheels.

I’ve done the wake-up call greeting the past couple of nights and I’ve changed it up a bit, opting to no longer give the upcoming overnight low forecast!!!…Call me a purist, but I don’t think a guest cares what the upcoming overnite low is going to be…So now it’s “Hi this is Sparrow…” and the day and the day’s forecast, best wishes for a great stay and BOOM, we’re done.

Had a bear sighting this morning…This is hardly unprecedented up here, but boy, this one was right at the door to the lobby…I had just entered the lobby fresh from delivering folios and there it was, just turning away from the trash can just to the left as you exit the door…Evidently there wasn’t any food to be had and he was waddling away and while this is hardly the biggest threat, boy, it wanders a few feet to its right and Mr Bear is activating the automatic door opener and then what happens if he gets curious and wanders in???…I mean, I have rooms available, $159, plus tax, tho if he cops an attitude I’m prepared to slash rates because he can rip me to shreds…I hear bears are quick and what if yours truly can’t get into the back office in time???…Altho if I am torn apart by a bear maybe the hotel will name the Employee of the Month award after me.

About 0345 some Halliburton guys come in saying they’re the new crew and are here to check-in…This resulted in a modest fiasco because there was not an updated room list at the front desk…Usually, we are on top of this and there are notes in the log book and keys made and all yours truly has to do is issue them, but today I was scrambling…Ultimately, I put them in rooms of people who they said were already gone and no one came back complaining, so it all worked out.

About 0630 a man comes up holding his phone and immediately starts speaking German as if we’re in Dusseldorf and not America…I don’t speak German…Not only that, even tho a quarter of my blood is German I don’t particularly look like I speak Geman, either and I have some zero clue why he thought I would speak German but here he is babbling away and holding his phone out…At first I thought he had a translation waiting for me, but it was the log-in page for our WiFi, and it was a simple matter to get him connected, even with his German-speaking phone…What is really funny is that at assorted points during this evolution I started speaking Spanish to him!!!…I am not making that up…I don’t know why that was…I mean, he looked like he spoke as much Spanish as Hitler but I suppose it was instinct, sort of like when you find yourself shouting to someone who’s blind.

Sparrow’s Sleep Log: 0930 Tuesday until 2100 Tuesday, a triumphant 11.5 hours for the day and 25 hours for the week, the highest Tuesday total in the memory of man…I slept so long The Wife was long home from the retailer and was almost ready to turn in when I woke up.

I did get up about 1530 to use the can and thought all right, I got a couple of more hours left which would be perfect…I could get a workout in and some watering and get some laundry done, too…None of that happened, of course, but when you need to sleep you need to sleep.

The Diary of a Nobody is a novel. All elements are either products of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Anything else is a coincidence.

The big news, tho, is Devon, the kid who brought the abandoned coffee shop next door and turned into the family homestead, is selling a couple of his parcels!!!…I am not making that up…The Wife and I were both curious, so I did some research and the parcels he is selling make up about 40 percent of his yard…One of the parcels runs against The Shire and has a house and a garage on it, both dilapidated,  and while I’m hardly Mr Fixit, I don’t think they could be made habitable…The Wife and I are both interested in this and we are going to do some investigating.

In 1975 – Former Teamsters union President Jimmy Hoffa disappears, last seen around 3:30pm in a restaurant parking lot in a Detroit suburb. Hoffa had been out of prison for a few years and was looking to regain power in the union, though certain members of the Mafia were known to oppose that. Though jokes about how Giants Stadium in New Jersey was built on the bridge of his nose were popular for a while, Hoffa has not been seen since.

In 2014 – Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners becomes the first pitcher in major league history to start 14 consecutive games, pitch at least seven innings and give up two or fewer runs in a 2-0 loss to the Cleveland Indians. Hernandez started the streak on May 18th in a 6-2 win over Minnesota and would extend the streak to 16 games before only going five innings in an August 16 start at Detroit. The old record of 13 had been established by Tom Seaver of the New York Mets in 1971.

In 1988 – Steve Winwood is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with Roll With It. The song would spend four consecutive weeks at the top and also peaked at #30 on Billboard’s soul chart. The song also went to #1 in New Zealand and Canada, though it did not crack the Top 50 in Winwood’s native Great Britain. It was the second and final #1 song for Winwood, after 1986’s Higher Love and History remembers it as the final #1 song on Casey Kasem’s original tenure as host of the radio show American Top 40.

Boy, Quentin is really regretting his attempt to leave the hotel…Recall earlier this month he gave notice, announcing he had taken the night manager gig at a really swanky condo/timeshare deal on the mountain…That didn’t work out because his new employer presumed Q had a driver’s license…He does not nor is he in any particular mood to get one, so the offer was withdrawn and replaced with an offer to be part-time, seasonal front desk clerk…Combined with some part-time hours here he’ll still be working 40 hours a week, but this is hardly where he expected to be three weeks ago, juggling part-time jobs.

SAY, THIS IS PROGRESS: The federal government recently announced they will resume executing prisoners that have been issued death sentences.

Dry, Technical Matter: Currently five federal prisoners have execution dates. They begin on December 9 and the final one is scheduled to die on January 15. They would be the first federal executions since Louis Jones was killed in 2003. There has been an unofficial federal moritorium on federal executions since then.

Maybe They’ll String Them Up To A Tree: Good gravy, how much farther back can the GOP time-machine take us? Will they next be issuing white hoods at their national convention next year? How vindictive a nation do we need to be? We’re already locking them up forever, what else do we need to do?

The death penalty has one use: revenge. That’s it. It doesn’t deter anyone from doing anything and it costs exponentially more to execute a prisoner than it costs to lock them up for life. It’s only purpose is to cause prosecutors to achieve and maintain a state of arousal and the familes of the victims have the satisfaction of revenge, nowadays known as closure.

Fly In The Ointment: America has executed innocent people. Don’t kid yourself. To date, 156 people have been released from death row because it had been established they did not commit the crime(s) they were condemned for. To think the innocent have been strapped to the chair or gurney and asked to say some last words is folly.

Final Answer: The death penalty should be abolished. It has no place in a nation conceived in liberty.

The Diary of a NobodyIt’s Sunday Spaghetti Nite (SSN) at The Shire, plus the new sleep week is off to a good start. Today’s Diary.

The big news for Sunday Spaghetti Nite (SSN) is that, at the request of The Wife, I only made half as much…There are always leftovers which The Wife was having problems with because she found herself consuming them at times your more classically trained dieticians would frown upon, like one in the morning…So I bought a smaller jar of sauce and only cooked half the spaghetti I usually do and there were no leftovers….The only downside – or upside, depending on your point of view – was that I did not similarly alter the amount of Sparrow’s Classic Sausage Chunks SCSC) that goes into my Secret Recipe Sauce (SRS)…The result was there were an awful lot chunks in there, more than I’m looking for, actually, which are words ol’ Sparrow never thought he would say…For her part, The Wife had no problems with the number of chunks and she remarked she thought tonight was the best SSN yet.

In 1976 – What History refers to as the Son of Sam killings get underway when David Berkowitz shoots two women in the Pelham Bay area of the Bronx. Donna Lauria, 18, was killed and her friend Jody Valenti, 19, was injured and Berkowitz’s third shot didn’t hit anybody. Over the next year, Berkowitz would kill five and injure six more people before being captured in August 1977. Berkowitz is currently serving six life sentences and despite parole hearings every two years consistently declines to request his release.

In 1948 – The XIV Summer Olympics open in London. Basketball made its second appearance at the Games and was played indoors for the first time with the US defeating France 65-21 to win their second straight gold medal. Because of World War II, these were the first Olympics since the 1936 Berlin Games and neither evil Japan nor Germany were invited. London had also hosted the 1908 Summer Games and in 2012 became the first city to host three Summer Olympics.

In 1972 – Gilbert O’Sullivan is at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first of four consecutive weeks and six weeks overall with Alone Again (Naturally). It was O’Sullivan’s first of five Top 40 hits and remains his only #1 song. The song also went to #1 in Canada and was Billboard’s second-biggest hit of the year. The song’s stay at #1 was broken up for one week by Brandy (You’re a Fine Girl) by Looking Glass.

In 1855 – The USS Constellation, America’s last naval vessel built exclusively with sail power, is commissioned with a crew of 21 officers and 265 sailors. After commissioning, Constellation saw service in the Mediteranean and Africa before reporting for duty with the Union in the Civil War. She was the second of four Navy ships to use the name – it is not currently in use – and was decommissioned and recommissioned a couple of times before being struck from the Navy’s ship registry in 1955. She is now a museum ship in Baltimore harbor.

In 1984 – The Games of the XXIII Summer Olympics open in Los Angeles. 6,829 athletes from 140 nations participated in 221 events and the US led all nations with 83 gold and 174 total medals. Romania and West Germany followed in the total medal count in an Olympics boycotted by the Soviet Union and 13 other nations. Noted for low construction costs and a $250 million operating profit, the Los Angeles Games are generally considered to be the most financially successful in Olympic history.

In 1990 – The Dance by Garth Brooks is at #1 on Billboard’s country chart – then known as the Hot Country Singles and Tracks chart – for the third and final week. It was Brooks’ second of 19 #1s on the country chart and the first of five consecutive #1s. Though the song did not chart on Billboard’s Hot 100, it did make the pop charts in Great Britain, Scotland and Ireland. The song was written by Tony Arata.
